Reminds me of a guy in 1980 who won the Finnish lottery while working in Sweden. He won 1 million markka and ended up owing almost 2 million markka in combined taxes to the Finnish and Swedish governments. To my understanding he had to pay over the original amount to sweden since sweden had a lottery monopoly and thus the foreign winnings were considered illegal. The agreements against dubble taxation between the countries did not apply to lottery tax at the time. He ended up having his house and cars repossesed. The guy was called Veikko Ronkainen. Little information about him exists online besides one interview from 1985.

@irwinisidro yeah, i do know that but it's not all states and in some there're ways to bypass those rules. beside, you can usually take some time to organize things before going public with your mugshot in the press by lawyerin' up before. statistically, strangers are more nuisance than menace, family, friends and coworkers are both and can turn from the first category to the second one quite fast. anyway, when you're talking of lump sums in the high tens of millions or more, there are ways to manage that kind of personal upheaval and usually some very professional advice is available from the lottery folks and specialized firms. anyway, getting rid of most of your current set of _not so rich people_ problems by exchanging them for _rich people_ ones is usually a good trade off, if you're not an alcoholic, junkie, gambler or some kind of emotionnal wreck or low iq twat that gets taken advantage of regularly that is, as money is a tool that when levied intelligently can mitigate if not alleviate most if not all of those. the only one remaining is a trust issue and a deeply lingering paranoia that often comes with it. 😏

I live in Mobile, Alabama just 20 minutes away from Grand Bay. It’s surreal to hear my favorite Irish KZbinr talking about the very county I reside in. So gambling isn’t TOTALLY illegal in Alabama as there are several casinos, all of which are located on Native American reservations. We’ve been trying to get a lottery for quite some time but our bible-beater politicians keep on rejecting the idea. Great vid as always

Even with splitting the ticket and getting a total of $3M, you'd be set for life. Like just get yourself a stock broker and invest that extra money. All of them coulda been set for life. Instead she ends up having to gift away money and pay for legal battles. I wonder if she ever lies awake at night and thinks about how dirty she did her coworkers, and the man that literally made that possible in the first place.

No. He was an asshole from the beginning. My ex husband is also a trucker. He makes plenty money. He lives in a giant house. He even brags about his income (which you really shouldn't do to your exwife). This guy was jerking around poorer people instead of giving them the money they needed THAT DAY to pay for basic necessities.

there are a LOT of stories of unlucky lottery winners. it seems like in most cases it's more like a curse than anything else. if i ever won a huge sum like that, the first thing i would do is keep quiet and don't let anyone know. just be rich in a very inconspicuous manner. probably conjure up a story about how i had a ingenious idea and it worked out pretty well, financially, so no one would suspect i had any more disposable income than necessary for my current lifestyle. put the money in a safe place, maybe tell the tax man you lost it or something xD. only cash transactions, obviously.

The only time the IRS ever comes after rich people, is when they are recently poor and suddenly come into money. Since they are new to money, they don’t know how to hide it yet, and they haven’t had time to hire the right accountants and money managers to properly move their money around to avoid all the taxes, just like all the old money does.

It wasn't shaky reasoning at all. "You said you would do this if you won the lottery, but when you won the lottery you decided not to" is fairly sound reasoning. They demanded that she not reneg on her agreements, which is a completely reasonable demand (which is why it was initially ruled in the favor of the plaintiff)

This all hinged off a small gesture of kindness (it was after all a tip given to her) that when he realized what he missed out on, scrambled for any excuse to get some of that money. We all make those "haha if I win i'll ___" half promises because we know we won't ever win, yeah the onus was on her to keep her word, but at the end of the day people saw she had so much money and rationalized "she's got plenty of leftover, she won't mind giving me a few grand" That's like If I walked up to your house and BS'd a reason why I should own your garage and it's fine because you still have the rest of the house, its pure greed when someone has to use flimsy wordplay to assert they are owed something from someone else. This is why I think Donating the money to charity right out is the only way to avoid people demanding things from you

That was the least she could have done. I would have definitely done that, that man more than earned it having made my life literally
@shiranuithewolf855911 ай бұрын
To be fair, a lottery ticket is usually a shitty tip, 99.99…% of the time it’s worthless. You wouldn’t give someone a cash tip then go back and ask them to return some of it. Anything given as a tip is final and if you give away a winning lottery ticket you can get fucked
@WildWombats11 ай бұрын
@@shiranuithewolf8559 I mean absolutely, but I'm just saying realistically, I'd feel grateful for him and I feel it's more of the "asshole" option to just be like "Nah not giving you a truck" I mean yeah she definitely did not have to, but it's also not the "good karma" option if you get what I mean. I just wouldn't feel right stifling the guy like that. I suppose I'm probably a bit more kind than many are, but I just wouldn't have done that personally. But in normal tipping situations the tip is usually not in the range of millions of dollars either, I know he's not really a friend per se but if a friend had given you this ticket and you did the same thing, I'm sure that would not be appreciated by the friend. So clearly it is wrong to do to a friend, and I wouldn't wrong a stranger either if I could help it.
@Badficwriter10 ай бұрын
@@WildWombats A friend is not a stranger who didn't want to tip you. This guy did not want to give people money. He wanted to gamble. Truck drivers make decent money, unlike waitresses. He could fucking afford it instead of his stupid little games. If he had given the ticket IN ADDITION to a regular good tip? That might earn you some points. Not "I give you trash but expect gold in return".

She was forced to engage in gambling pools. Other waitresses have talked about how much they hate the lotto tips ("Thanks for NOTHING"). Money tips are better than stupid lotto tickets that waste your time. She was exposed to threats by the publicity (it wouldn't just be the employees and her ex, its EVERYONE). Her ex was an actual criminal. She had to fight for 13 years to not be ripped off for trying to share money with her actual family and friends. The IRS goes after who they think they can beat. They routinely give up when faced with actual wealth that can sue the IRS and make it more trouble than its worth. Poor people are just easier to bleed.
