18:47 The future explained - Technical talk at Yacht Racing Forum
France’s legendary transatlantic singlehanded race, the Route du Rhum, draws millions of spectators. This year, as details of a brutal weather forecast started to sink in, the mood on the dock swung as tension began to build. The 3,500 mile race to Guadeloupe was going to be tough; boat busting, strength sapping tough.
After a perfect drag racing start, the big winds and huge waves swept in. Boats broke and skippers retired, yet some pushed on through. We tell the story.
Plus, we go foiling indoors to find out how a high performance America’s Cup boat could provide the basis for a radical new commercial vessel.
And glamour in St Tropez, technical talk in Lorient and big Olympic news in Florida.

I would love to sail on the 100foot trimaran. Can you imagine the thrill?

Now if they put lightweight Solar film on the big sails, it could really fly.

didnt know Netflix were sponsoring sailing, also these multi hulls have been going across the atlantic in various sizes for years and they always seem to have major issues whether its hulls breaking up or even more serious flipping over.

Not always, often. But don't forget they leave in winter, in the worst weather, when everybody is searching safety in the harbours. They push the boats to the very limits.

My neighbors in Cannes (at the dock) panerai classic regatta lost their boat and the skipper died after a colisión with another boat the day before this happened they came alongside us in a catastrophic fashion .... almost stoving our hull , boats can be very dangerous and it seems that racing is often the antithesis of seamanship

I agree wholeheartedly. Why is a boat doing 850 miles in a 24 hr period with only one soul on board. That is a danger to everything on board and in it's path above and below the waterline. No matter how you cut it, you are moving at killer speeds on a public thoroughfare without the full attention of a solo driver. Like doing a 24hr Le Mans thru traffic with one driver. Incidentally, the Le Mans is on a closed course and racing time is shared by 3 drivers. Any high speed endurance transit over water should require a minimum of 3 crew. With one as a dedicated lookout. Even the venerable Joshua Slocum was lost at sea while sailing alone.

Not quite sure how foiling boats will deal with all the crap in the oceans. The need systems that will allow foil to hit an object and flipl up likel a kayak rudder.

With a loss of lift like that it's going to drop a hull and pitch pole at 50 kts.

Unless I don't understand what Artemis is saying, getting a boat up to speed to create relative wind (with no wind to start with) and expecting it to continue on it's own will not work. As an iceboater for the last 50 years I have tried this on class ice with almost zero drag. We would push the iceboat with a vehicle (studded motorcycle) and the relative wind would be coming from the front of the iceboat and the sail would flap or luff. If there was a current (somehow the ice was moving) it would not help and the boat would certainly not sail up current.

@MajorLeague bleeding edge racing is all about asking "how fragile/light can we make this and have it still just barely work". And hitting the ocean at 40+ knots is nasty, I've broached at that speed and the boat just disintegrated. Not because it was badly built, but because a boat that wouldn't disinterate could never go fast enough to get into that situation in the first place. Especially foilers where weight matters more than most boats. Sure, you want more margin in ocean racing than the americas cup or superfoilers, but if there's too much margin the other boats will foil right past you while you sit there hulls down.

low hours.. only sailed on weekends. Needs a little TLC. Boat presents well, call for price. Jokes aside, It probably still is. The replacement isn't due for construction until next year.

If your speedboat doesn't snap in half while trying to dive through an 11m wave, how will the fuel tanker keep up?

So Artemis just redefined the laws of physics? Someone explain to me how that Amazon River example works in any way...whatsoever. Yeah you float at 10kts....but your apparent wind angle is 0 and the flow speed over your foils is also 0. Energy in /= energy out...yeah? Nah?
@halthammertime8914
@halthammertime8914 5 жыл бұрын
you start with the boat going perpendicular to the river flow which will give you the beam reach course. You can point the boat to broad reach (in this case boat will go backwards if seen from the shore, but forward against the water current). As the speed builds up, they will sheet in up to close hauled course. If they are able to do 30 knots with just 10 knots of the wind speed, it gives 21.2 knots of VMG (against the current of 10 knots). FYI landyachts with propellers are capable to go up to 3 times the wind speed against the wind (because of better grip).

I have assumed that their TWA will be around 45 degrees, which is false given that they travel 3x the wind speed. They will be able to go against the current with TWA less than 70 degrees.

@@ERIK31351 if there is a difference between the speed of wind and speed of water - you can sail. Zero wind speed and 10 knots of current is the same thing as 10 knots of wind and zero speed of current.

'Drag is a problem that can be easily fixed'... in cases where you have billions of dollars to throw at it. I wish I could talk to Artemis, about a job, I see a simple way to make their boats far faster.

I believe that ANY reputable and recognized sailing club can provide you with their contact info, if not contact the race admin, they will provide you that info also. You will not know if they like your idea, unless you show it to them :)

@@JulianIbanez13 ooops, too late, I forgot the great idea already. Har har, I need to laugh because back when I was working full time on boat designs, power boats that exhaust pure water, a major company (now defunct) in the USA had their lawyer call me and say, loudly "You must never call a company about an idea (that good)!" Like the great and powerful OMC, Evinrude Johnson, they chose to go out of biz rather than change with the times.
