It struck me watching this, the relationship AT has had with helicopters is very profound; his dad being a rescue pilot, the heartbreak at knowing it would be impossible for him to become a pilot for ophtamological reasons, his own psychological technique for mind adjustements imagining a difficult situation from a metaphorical overview from an imaginary helicopter looking down and examining an issue "from a distance" to find an objective solution to a given problem, and this footage especially, which I believe cements Alex as one of the greatest legends in sailing history. I am so heartbroken he will not be racing the Vendée Globe in 2024.

@efstopp3 жыл бұрын
Their daggerboards have been moved from pointing straight down and just providing tracking in a line to coming off the side with crazy curves and they provide tremendous lift while submerged so the hull isn't really dragging so much at all.
@hambamable Жыл бұрын
@@efstopp except the leward foil has snapped off in this footage. Its actually really a great comparison with Banque populare gliding more gracefully over the swell whilst Alex Thompson on Hugo Boss just smashed through it without the added lift. The feat of coming second with a broken fin for 70% of the race is probably the greatest sporting achievement in human history yet few know about it.

We are looking at the most modern ideas introduced in solo hull sailing. The hull is definitely a planing hull with two rudders to ensure that at least one is immersed in the water. The wings on the side and lateral movement of the dead weight under the hull adds to stability. The transom is wide and the sail profile is well cut . Ar 1:12 we see the side wing which adds stability and lift too. Well , it is not such a comfortable ride but, my my it is very fast. The manner in which the water leaves the transom, is an indication that at high speed both propellers and rudders need to be designed with a sharp end rather than the streamlined profile we normally use at slower speed. It is interesting that there is no creature in nature that operates at such condition as creatures evolve to be very meagre on the use of energy . Still nature teaches us a lot and a good designer must keep his eye on nature. Congratulations to all engineers who made all that appears in this video so possible to be viewed at our homes. Engineers are basically a young profession and starting accelerating its ingenuity only about 100 years ago. No other profession in the human fraternity has ever contributed so much comfort and assistance to the human race. One hopes that an engineer's intelligence is not used to destroy the world with pollution, as all that we see in this video , did pollute the earth in some ways or another. We must be careful about the equation with relates our comforts and the manner in which we use the materials and the pollution necessary to shape them into out home comforts. Still, it is a wonderful feeling knowing that engineers are moving at such a fast pace and other professions gain by the engineering products , but do not admit it that most of their successes is due to them applying engineering including the classical arts which were always hesitant to accept the fact that all their art is based on engineering foundations!
@ArnovanDalsum6 жыл бұрын
Carmel Pule' what propeller do you have in mind?
@carmelpule69546 жыл бұрын
Arno van Dalsum, Sir, I had in mind surface propellers and cupped ones as they operate totally different from submerged propellers. The boat in the video is going so very fast that all the " trailing parts" as transom, rudders etc need to be truncated and not necessarily streamlined. I designed high speed propellers and rudders "and boats" where the high speed does not need streamlining at the rear ends but airation produce a better performance. It is the same with aircraft really and the upper section of a wing need not be curved to provide vacuum as the lower side provides high enough pressure to do the lifting. I hope that is now understood.
