Yep. From 2010-2014 I owned a 1986 Lotus Turbo Esprit. 2400 lb car with a 215 bhp turbo-four in it. Its closest competitors at the time were the Ferrari 328 GTS and the Porsche 944 Turbo and it was arguably the better car of the three. Nowadays EVERYTHING has more power than that, and most any FWD sedan can probably smoke the old Esprit in a drag-race, but it wasn't built for dragging and will STILL out-handle most modern cars. It was probably the closest thing I'll ever experience to driving a F1 car (I know, its FAR from being an actual F1 car, but still as close as I'll get! LOL). It was a light, fast, pure and intuitive driving experience. The thing steered as if by thought and didn't fear any curve the road could throw at it. It was a high miles, modified car that had been K-swapped. The car had minimum value. These types of transplants can't be judged. None of this is about cost. It is something he wanted to do. I am an automotive engineer with EV background. An EV is not better than a ICE driveline. It is just different. Some believe its worse for range, long term battery reliability and charging inconvenience aka time. This is done for the technical challenge...because he could and well done to Sevon for accepting the challenge and succeeding. Most of us would rather have an original, unmolested NSX. I sure would. Being that he got it with no engine, the fact that he got it to drive with anything is an improvement. I like most EV swaps that I read about. (I haven't seen one in person yet.) I have little patience though for the less-than-adequate battery packs many are using. Usable range matters, even on a short-trip daily driver. I want more KZbinrs to press the EV conversion owners about how much ACTUAL range they have seen so far. In my mind the coolest appearing EV swap is useless with less than 100 miles of usable range. It's a glorified trailer queen.
@rsmith022 жыл бұрын
My commute was 5 miles. 100 mi. would be overkill for 90% of my driving.
@snowrocket2 жыл бұрын
@@rsmith02 And you would be the exception. My last three jobs were 25, 35, and 13 miles one way. Also, it's a known fact that you only use 70% of rated EV range without damaging the battery pack long term. For daily use, never charge above 90%, and never discharge below 20%. That leaves 70% POTENTIAL range. If it's really cold or hot the battery management system works harder to maintain 70-degree F battery temperature. You may also be using heat or A/C, wipers, lights, radio, and occasional quick acceleration. All of that eats range. That's why an early Nissan Leaf with 80 potential miles of range wasn't practical for many people.

There's a valuable lesson here. Never admit anything on camera. He bobbed and weaved the "How much did you pay?" question like a man that told his wife he paid one price while really paying about 3x that.. He might have a future in politics if this EV stuff doesn't work out for him.

Afragola design has a pretty sick tesla swapped mr2 underway, another channel had a dual tesla swapped evo and a tesla swapped mk3 supra. I love seeing these ev swaps done on older tuner cars which live on and we're already heavily swapped anyway. 👍🏻😎 Also this build is even sicker than the project electrolite you guys covered a while back by Kevin Erickson. Y'all should get with salvage 2 savage again for the s2sla? Or bisimoto and his tesla swapped widebody 935 Porsche. 👍🏻

I have a 1989 Lotus Esprit that I want to do a Tesla conversion on. It would be super light and could probably beat a Plaid on a drag strip.
@gearbanginentertainment74762 жыл бұрын
probably untrue unless you swapped plaid-equivalent motors.
@TheMugwump12 жыл бұрын
The idea of an EV and "super light" do NOT exist in cars now unless you're talking about the concept electric F1 cars. Strapping 1k additional pounds of batteries on a Lotus (where do you put them?) is the opposite of the whole idea of what the car is.

These swaps are undoubtedly cool. I'm only 2:11 in but I can tell I'll love it. However, I've always loved 80's and 90's cars that look and drive as though they just came out of the factory. There's something so satisfying about a car that has been untouched for 30 years. Regardless, still great! Edit: It came with no engine so I don't feel as bad

I love this build. One thing he probably doesn't know yet is that the NSX eats tires in less than 10k miles. When he gets tired of the $2,000 tire changes, he'll let you have it cheap. :D
@patrickvanvlooten2 жыл бұрын
Only the early spec alignment eats rubber, later spec alignment will get you far beyond 10k miles. It drives totally different though!
@RealRickCox2 жыл бұрын
@@patrickvanvlooten The wheels on this car are set up in such a way that it makes the car drive like it's on rails, but that has a price with the tires. I only know this because a good friend has a 1992 and when he uses the Z rated Michelin Sport tires, they're done in 8-10k miles. I'll have to ask him if he knows he can adjust the alignment and get more miles...
@patrickvanvlooten2 жыл бұрын
@@RealRickCox I had mine set to the later spec alignment when it wasn't lowered like it is now, my tyres are still okay and well over 10k miles on there. I believe it's the 1994 or 1995 spec alignment. Tell your friend to check the NSX wiki on Prime, the numbers are on there. The main problem is the toe in on the rears and once you lower the car also the camber. I'm on a very agressive alignment now that my car is lowered and I'm certain these tyres won't last me very long. The trade-off is that the car now drives on rails which it didn't when I drove the later spec alignment.

@Mike_Costello2 жыл бұрын
It's Waaaaay better! He will eventually add batteries to that space above the motor though when the newness wears off. Having the batteries behind in the boot/trunk is adding too much weight behind the wheels. However it looks like this will progress into a fully realised conversion. And yes. It's VERY much better.

I had a legend coupe in highschool with the c32a (same bottom end) and I always wanted an NSX but the c series were always difficult to mod and the nsx engine bay is so small making it even harder. EV has the potential to add the power to the looks and handling of the gen 1 nsx. I’m (some random guy) and I approve this ev swap
