Hello and Welcome to another Budget Builds Episode where today we'll be taking a look a the Nvidia Geforce 9500GT, one of the rarest cards i have had to get my hands on with the elusive 128MB Variant.
So before you jump to the comments (Which some of you probably have) there was indeed a release of the 9500GT with only 128MB of RAM, i know insane. It was released in certain regions of Europe, and Russia. With most coming from low end brands a few of us will recognise.
But that's only the start of the story, so join me as we take a deep dive into this card, and find out just how well 128MB of VRAM Holds up.

To unlock the card with more vram you NEED to flash DDR2 bios, if you flash GDDR3 bios (like on regular 9500GT) it would not work. That's why you should try a vbios from a 9500GS which use DDR2 memory (so any G96 DDR2, it might also work with G96C DDR2 vbios)

Playing GTA V on lowest setting with 800x600 and still get 30fps is just try to torture your eye. It really good that it can run GTA V but graphic is horrible than GTA SA.

The most stubborn thermal paste I've come across is the stuff that dates prior to 2004 or so. I remember at least one Pentium 4 with thermal paste so resilient that the heatsink came off with the heat spreader still attached, whilst the inadvertently delidded chip remained in its socket.

I used to have a 9500 GT and it had 512 MB of VRAM. Pair it with an intel pentium E2200 and 4 gigabytes of ram and you get the PC on which I suffered for 5 years.

Oh man, you had a better set up then me. My first personal computer had the same E2200, 2 gigabytes of ram, and (I think, I'd have to call up my dad to check my old closet for it) a FX 5200. Whatever the GPU was it was passively cooled trash that I loved. Had that PC for like 3 years before I got my first proper gaming PC.

Seems like a way to "recycle" already manufactured cards with bad VRAM. Just cut it down via BIOS to the smallest amount that can still be used for...err..something... and hope the bad VRAM chips are not in that region. Would've been interesting to see what memory chips are on that card and googling the size of them via their model number, then calculate how much is actually on the card. Because you can actually have a card with 256MB, flash a BIOS for a 1GB card and it'll work... for as long as you don't exceed 256MB. Then all hell breaks loose in terms of crashing and weird behavior. That's the main issue wie those chinese fake cards, except those are also claiming to be something more powerful

Man I felt your pain trying to whippe that thermal paste off. I did it once and it was horrible. Next time take a toothpick and brake it into two pieces, wood won't scratch metal because it is softer spray a little bit of alcohol and start scraping the surface with soft force. No, in fact these cards are cards that were returned under warranty to the manufacturer, and should have been destroyed, but somehow ended up in China, and were modified to be put back on the market. I studied this for many years, China has been doing this for approximately 20 years, the peak of this was with the GTS450, in which they acquired thousands of them (perhaps used in mining at a time when the gains from mining were not worth the effort of using a card high-end), the Chinese took all those damaged or simply old boards, and transferred their components to a new PCB, and sold them. When the GTS450 was no longer in demand among the public, they modified the bios so that it would be recognized as GTX6xx, sometimes with more memory than the card actually had (and this led to the card BSOD in games that used more than 512 or 1GB that it actually had), I searched a lot for a solution for bios, I was on several Russian and Chinese forums, and everything led me to the name of a single Chinese man in the mafia, responsible for all kinds of crap that lands in other countries.

I recall seeing cards similar to this. If I recall, they advertised "1GB" of VRAM, however what it was actually doing was using 128MB from the card, and then pulling the rest from system RAM.

I actually had one like that for the "family" PC about ten years ago: HD4550. All it was really needed for was accelerating media playback and a little basic Minecraft use, which it managed admirably.

That factory pink thermal compound is more easily removed using toothpicks to scrape it off the surface of the GPU, then you can use your regular alcohol to remove whatever residue is left.

You are still limited by PCI Express bandwidth. PCI-E 2.0 x16 = 8 GB/s, the DDR2 on this card = 16 GB/s.

Makes you wonder, were they cards with faulty RAM... would have to be a fault somewhere in the capacity, as I'm guessing it was all one bank, unless it could be chopped from 128 bit to 64 - any VRAM performance tests that could hint at that?

I remember running GTA V on the 128mb Nvidia Quadro NVS 135m in my Dell Latitude D630 from 2007. The damn game is so well optimized that I was almost able to get a playable framerates (Granted I had it running at 320x240 with every performance mod possible).

I wonder if you could run it with the full vram if the memory clock was lowered? Granted system stability is the biggest issue. Also the silicon lottery is at play, you may, or may not be able to unlock the full amount with lower clocks.

I use to have a pair of EVGA Nvidia 9500GT 1GB cards in SLI, as I got them on a TigerDirect Black Friday sale for really cheap, and on Vista, and later Win 7 it ran Crysis fairly decent on 720p medium settings. I learned a hard lesson a few years later as I use to keep my PC under my desk to save space, and my girlfriend's daughter knocked my morning coffee off my desk killing my PC, and frying the 2 cards, but it gave me an excuse to upgrade my rig that I've been running ever since with only minior upgrades like the GPU, swapping out an HDD for an SSD, new mobo after the old one died a freak death, and ditching Windows for Manjaro Linux W/ MATE DE.

For old dried thermal paste, try lighter fluid first and then alcool to clean the lighter fluid. Alcool does not melt dried paste, lighter fluid does.

probably the same thing amd was doing binning cpus that had a faulty core, disabling that core and selling it as a lower core cpu. the ram was probably iffy and didn''t pass inspection so they probably just restricted the bad segments.

I remember playing Tourist Trophy for ps2 on pcsx2 at 60fps in 1080p with win7ultimate on a GT9500 and an Intel q8400 overclocked at 3.21ghz. Best experience ever. GTA4 was also a breeze. But I burned half cores when mining bitcoins on it. You've been advised. It was still working though. 😂

I remember back in 2009 when I built my 1st gaming computer with A Q6600, 6GB of DDR2 and 2x 9800 Gt's. And I use that all the way until 2015 where 1 of the 9800gt died so I replaced it with a gtx 750ti. What a world of difference

There were cards before that with 64 megs of VRAM. Back when these cards were relevent we didn't have 1080p gaming. We had resolutions more akin to 640x480 (that's why everything before 2008, back in DOS was 640x480 or weird resolutions. The "High resolution" back then was talking about textures in games. The Voodoo 3d cards only had 16 megabytes of Vram on board. Edit: I used to have a voodoo 3d card with 16 megs of Ram and a Geforce 9400GT (The X400 cards from Geforce were not meant to be gaming cards, they were meant to be in what the industry called entertainment PC's- for movies/video and music- back when HP was making all different types of PCs and selling them in the big box stores.) That is why Nvidia numbered their Cards like they did for the industry so you could easily pick which card you wanted- Back then it was- 8300/9300/230= Business Machines like an Emachine Only good for a video port 8400/9400/240= Home Entertainment PC (Videos, Movie and Music playback only) 8500/9500/250= Extremely Entry level gaming 8600/9600/260= Entry Level gaming 8700/9700/270= Mid Tier gaming 8800/9800/280= High End Gaming 8900/9900/290= Software engineering/rendering, meant for industry work stations. Nvidia still numbers their cards the same way with the first number being generation, second being what the card is supposed to be for. Basically the card you have here is a 2008 equivalent of a Gforce GTX 1050 GT. It is the same intended purposes- extremely entry level gaming/budget card. Far from useless at the time when it was relevant. These cards were not only in Russia. They were sold all over the world. They were as common as the GTX 1050GT cards are today.

I don't think the 8900 and 9900 ever existed. The 290 did though, as well as the 8800. As for the 8700/9700, I'm pretty sure these were mobile cards. I know the 8700 was a mobile card and was a slightly OC'd 8600M GT.

It always made me mad cards like the 8400GS 8500GT and 8600GT had models flooding the market with gobs of vram but you would be hard pressed to find an 8600GTS (‘member that one?) that had more than 256MB. The best 2600XT with GDDR4 was also limited to 256 while the lesser gddr3 and Pro sku had 512.

I had one with only 128mb physically onboard, back then. Believe it or not, back then, it made for a fairly ok budget card, allthough I preferred my 8400gt despite a DirectX compatibility issue back then. You gotta realize, back then, 640x480 was common on budget systems. 6150se was still common on amd boards. You're playing 2011-on games on a basement bargain card from earlier 2000's.

I picked up an AGP-slot "DIAMOND S9250AGP128 Radeon 9250" card with 128MB VRAM and some decent NVIDIA graphics chip on it back around that timeframe... Bought it for a reasonably low price, because the specs were good enough to make HALO and Project 64 run better on the family PC. I think it was $70 🤔

Fry's electronics had some of those cards. There was some kind of driver trick that used system ram to buffer the 128 megs on the cards, so that 67% might have been correct.

My laptop from 2009 has the same gpu in it, but it's configured better came with 512mb of GDDR3 and has a 625mhz stock clock. Honestly not a bad card in it's day and was still usable as my secondary computer up till around 2017-2018.

9500GT = 8500GT. Series 9 cards are basically re-brand of 8th series. It was actually such good architecture, that was transferred even to next series of nVidia cards as low and mid range cards :). Now prices of 9800GT will sky rocket. You are welcomed :).

@@BudgetBuildsOfficial i think they were reflashed 8500gt's, because of 65nm. newer 9500gt's(rev 2.0) were 55nm with 256mb. This was the rebrand era. ati 5xxx series get 6xxx rebrands, same as 8xxxgt/gtx/gtx+ going 9xxx.
