Good stuff, as always. I put it this way: "Your strokes are getting good. Now you have to learn how to play tennis."

so much bullying in tennis! Former high level junior just came on my channel for his 2nd singles match in 5 years. Identified himself as a 4.0 in his current state. Beat me 8-2 in a pro set but every comment “this guy is not a 4.0” because he has unorthodox strokes. make it make sense.

The more you try to rationalize it and reason with those people the more crazy you'll feel bro! Love your videos, you're doing amazing work.

I was in my 60s playing 45+ nationals and played a Tennis Channel guy. I was up in the 1st set when he started moon balling and beat me. I congratulated him on his strategy after the match. Next round he played a local Tennis Academy director and beat him the same way in a close match. Afterwards he came up to me and was really shaken because the Academy guy had screamed and yelled at him after the match for moon balling.

Wow, just wow! The insight and honesty of this video is amazing. I believe many of us who subscribe to your site and watch many tennis videos on KZbin have adequate skills but too many of us have missed “the other side of the coin”. I feel I happened upon this mindset and it has helped my game as well help me to be a better team player. I wish I had access to a video like this years ago. Please keep up the good work 💪🏾🎾

I think there are THREE components: 1 - your skills 2 - how to win match and 3 - how to BE in a match Ofc 2 is ultra important but 2 is even more I think - you have to play your game and, if you have them, bring your skills. If you can't do that then you won't get the chance to finish.

I am currently ranked 7.8 billion in the world and I think in another 20 years I will be ranked 7.7 billion in the world. I enjoy the game of tennis and I learned so many things about tennis by losing matches. I also have learned how to enjoy the game tennis win, lose, or draw. The one thing I learned is to be able to laugh at yourself. Great job on the video my friend.

100% agree! My ground strokes are slow and don't have top spin. My serve is slow and I don't have a second serve. However, I win the majority of my matches because I'm consistent and have good defense.

Such an important topic! I think in my personal development I have moved past the whole “being angry for losing to “worse” players” thing and now just accept that on the day they were just a stronger total package. However another tangential topic I would love to see a video on is how to not to lose when you are winning. In the last few months I have lost a number of matches where I am up 5-x but end up losing the set and match (locally we often play single set matches). Normally I would think mental fortitude, but I am actually good at remaining calm when I am losing and catching up. Specifically I seem to be bad at staying in the lead. Would love to hear your thoughts!

I’m 57 years old and obviously grew up in a much different era, meaning there weren’t academies and clinics to train. I hit with my coach once a week (Saturday or Sunday he was a lawyer during the week) and he had one condition; he would only work with you if you played matches every day during the week. Growing up in Mobile, AL there were several good players so matches were never an issue. I played against anyone; other kids, adults, college players, teaching pros. I did more match play than work on specific technical aspects. I’m not saying that technique isn’t important but it means nothing if you can’t play. One thing I have noticed with today’s junior players is that they only play their peers. They don’t play against other types/different aged players. You have to practice matches just like any other skill or aspects of the technical components. The kids I work with in the northeast just don’t play enough matches and it shows.

This camera and room are incredible God, I fully, fully agree that winning a match is a separate skill. I think and talk about it all the time with my matchup with Z. That man knows how to win, and I have a LONG way to go with that skill. And it's something I'm trying to get through to people.

Great Video Ian. Just love your stuff. Perhaps you could talk a little about the winning mindset or how to overcome a loosing mindset? Personaly i often find myself leading a match against "stronger" players , and even more recently with match points in hand and then somehow loosing. I try to take the positives out but its becoming disheartening getting so close and then more often than not loosing matches that i was ahead in.

Bravo Ian. At the end of the day, playing a "Game" is to do with numbers. Hence your overall performance is to produce those numbers that favor the rules of the game, no matter the esthetics. Technique is certainly helpful and of course important and if that technique looks pleasant it sure is a bonus, but winning a game is certainly much more than that and it requires many more variables to take seriously. Cheers! M

But is it real tennis..? I just lost 2 matches in the last couple of weeks to expert slicers - chaps with amazing hand skills + very quick feet. High level tennis is not played that way though and if you've been training and playing against 'higher' level players then top slicers can really mess you up. What I find with that type of much slower game is I never get out of neutral gear - everything's so slow shotwise and I just feel like I'm practising running for drop shots and though its prob subconscious I slightly give up. I know in theory its good practice trying to make pace on slow balls but if its mostly just a running exercise whats the point..?

OK. OK. I get it now. Played a match last week against a master hacker and chipper. The ball would fall 1 foot in front of the net on a regular basis. I lost. She was better at that style of play 100%. But I do not aspire to play that kind of tennis. It’s not enjoyable. Good for her.

I wouldnt say better at tennis. Better would imply skill and one tennis match doesn't evaluate ones overall skill. Another piece of knaaawledge. Those "hackers" / "pushers" spend all their time training against and beating players of orthodox styles so you aren't going to surprise them. If you spend that much time playing them you would probably win but you would play very different. Also btw this isn't a cope., I am very efficient at beating slicers but some ppl really get messed up more than others.

@IanWestermann p.s - check out Karue's latest Q&A video, from 6:30 through 7:45 he talks about this a little, obviously with different goals (top 100 instead of just playing to your ability) but it shows that the same issues are throughout tennis even at the pro level.

That's a bit of a cheap shot. I grew up watching Sampras and the likes in the 90s and Fed's way of playing (I'm not talking about technique) turned 🎾 s on its head. Roger was a master at disrupting his opponents by using variety and he certainly didn't win 20 grand slams by playing 'pretty' tennis (looking awesome was just a bonus for us tennis fans). I won't deny Novak is truly awesome though 👍 PS Love your channel Ian!
