As much as I dislike this song, which is a kind of folksy/seashanty with a bluesy guitar (Harrison seemed obsessed with these cheesy predictable phoned-in riffs at this time), the rendition at the NME '65 show is a revelation, even with mic problems. They were a bunch of old pros by their early 20's. But like many songs on this album, they seem out of their time, i.e., these songs are largely leftovers from their early days in Hamburg. The world was changing rapidly and this really feels like the album rushed out for Christmas. "Party" and "No reply" being the exceptions. But all filler, no killer here. And don't get me started about Mr Moonlight

The funny thing about 'Revolution 9' is that it was the first Beatles song I remember hearing. It was played on some oldies station, during a Beatles feature. I was so confused and blown away by it. It's friggin' amazing, but obviously not characteristic of them. They were influenced by Stockhausen's 'music concrete' plus other avante garde influences. It's a wonderful piece, but obviously if you don't like avante garde music/sound compositions, you ain't gonna like it. It would be akin to Beatles lovers disliking Stravinsky's serial compositions, the works of Schnittke, Grateful Dead spaces, Varese pieces, and so- none of which sound like Beatles music or appeals to its pop/rock strengths.

The stones been around for 60 years and have been releasing bad music since the late 70s. Same with The Beach Boys. The Beatles ending after 7 years is why they rarely have bad songs. Been their solo careers speak for themselves. Ringo’s solo stuff is awful, aside from the song It Don’t Come Easy. Harrison’s is pretty meh, aside from the All Things Must Pass album. Lennon has a pretty good solo career, even though it was less than 10 years(even you consider he didn’t make any music during 1976-1979). Everyone has an opinion. I can understand why some would say Sgt. Pepper’s is their worst. It doesn’t sound a lot like a Beatles record and it’s mainly Paul and George Martin arrangements. Yellow Submarine is a core album, so it should automatically be considered the worst since it’s offers almost nothing new. But I don’t, so I say A Hard Day’s Night is their worst. It’s very basic for a Beatles record and for 1964. Meanwhile at the same time The Animals recorded their mind blowing cover House Of The Rising Sun and The Zombies recorded She’s Not There. Both way better than anything on A Hard Day’s Night. Heck even other Merseybeat group Gerry And The Pacemakers recorded Ferry Cross The Mersey, which was musically and lyrically more interesting.

John’s rhythm guitar playing on both tracks is phenomenal and each has that signature 64’ sound which defined Beatlemania. @YearsOfLeadPoisoning2 жыл бұрын
I will stand by my position that Revolution 9 is one of the most important recordings by The Beatles. It's completely inspired and executed nearly perfectly for something that had basically never been attempted before, let alone included on a pop record. There's a clear narrative to the listener, the mix is great, and it's genuinely emotive and powerful. I think it's a stronger anti-war statement than anything they recorded, as a group or post-breakup. The first Faust LP is one of the most revered early krautrock albums, and has been praised for essentially attempting the same sound-collage approach years after Revolution 9. Stockhausen and Verese are equally regarded, but none of these composers or artists have had the direct impact of introducing music concrete / sound collage to the public consciousness as with Revolution 9. I guess it doesn't fit in with the album, but I'd argue that no Beatles album following Revolver except Let It Be and maybe Sgt Peppers feels cohesive. They've always been a bit of a mess. I know this is a very unpopular opinion, but I love the track. It's easily in my top 5 Beatles songs.

I'll never agree or get the What Goes On hate/disliking. It's way better than Michelle, Think For Yourself, Girl, and Run For Your Life. Doctor Robert has one of the prettiest harmony breaks they ever did and is easily better than Paul's toe dipping into granny music on side two. I also have to point out that Flying fits between Fool On A Hill and Blue Jay Way like god gave The Beatles a guide to orchestral hypnotism so that song is all about context. Also, there isn't a bad song on Magical Mystery Tour, it just gets less love for not having the one standard Ringo tune.

If I had to choose my least favorite on Sgt Pepper it would have to be She's Leaving Home. Within You Without You for me is one of the greatest songs out of the catalogue and Good Morning Good Morning would also make that list. She's Leaving Home for me has the lyrical misstep "Fun is the one thing that money can't buy". If you believe that to be true, you're clearly doing money wrong.

Its my own personal list based on my own taste: -Love me Do - Little child -Tell me why (yes, i have to choose one i didnt think this is bad) -What are you doing (its a good song sounds like bit unfinished.....instead of all the covers i'd love to see their own material here as "its for you" ) -Dizzy miss lizzy (For the rock and roll american ep it would be great nor to ending help album) -What goes on /Unfortunately i had to choose one , i bet if lennon maccartney sung this one it will be completely differentç/ -Yellow Submarine (NO Need explain why .....i'd love to have Rain instead) -Good mornng good morning /weakest track on pepper indeed -Flying (same above) - Why cant we do it in the road part 1 obla di obla da part 2 /Dunno why an ska-reggae song becomes in a granny one/ -Maxwell'ssilver hammer ....Weakest track on abbey road and even tough a masterpiece - Maggie mae .........NO NEED TO EXPLAIN ....probably one of the biggest mistakes beside Dig it short version ...Both choosen by Glin Jones thats the poor legancy glin jones left to The Beatles -Bad Boy .....enjoyable but it not said nothing to me. I rather by far the outtake of "Leave my kitten alone" And Finally: You Know my name look up the number... Its a comical song but also interested listen to the rythm changes its very joyfull. The shorter version edited just to be included at Let it be B side lost a lot of the enjoyable ska saxophone played by Brian Jones (The best part of the song for me) I`ll say again Its based on my personal taste IM A BIG BIIIG A MEAN HUGE BEATLES FAN AND I REALLY LOOOOVE THEIR WHOLE CATALOGE so it was an exercise Hope you all have enjoyed reading my own review!

Hey, Vinyl. I'll give it a try. It does pain me to do this,, because The Beatles have been my favorites for at least 40 years! (Same criteria...no covers...) Well, anyway... 01. There's A Place 02. I Wanna Be Your Man 03. When I Get Home 04. I Don't Want To Spoil The Party 05. Tell Me What You See 06. What Goes On 07. Doctor Robert 08. Within You Without You 09. Flying 10. Wild Honey Pie 11. Revolution 9 12. Only A Northern Song 13. Sun King 14. Dig It 15. Yes It Is 16. The Inner Light Good Lord, this was tough. Mostly because I basically like every song listed above. Now I feel bad for putting this hypothetical album together. So, as a way of a palette cleanser, here is my "sleeper" album, filled with fantastic songs that aren't that widely known. And Many of these are among my all time favorite songs... 01. P.S. I Love You 02. It Won't Be Long 03. Tell Me Why 04. No Reply 05. The Night Before 06. You Won't See Me 07. Love You To 08. Lovely Rita 09. Your Mother Should Know 10. I'm So Tired 11. Savoy Truffle 12. All Together Now 13. Her Majesty (yep!! LOVE it!!) 14. For You Blue 15. This Boy 16. You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) So there you have it. First, my list of "worst" (really, least great) songs, then a list of "sleeper" songs that I'm guessing the majority of people aren't that familiar with.

You stepped bravely into a veritable minefield with this one, dear host. But full respect for emerging on the other side relatively unscathed. One observation.... Baby's in Black was a concert fave. Check it out; there are at least three performances on KZbin. Paul's high harmonies are powerful, yet gorgeous, and really elevate this sleeper to the A-list of their early period.

In general I agree with you on some picks, but: worst song on Beatles for Sale is Eight Days a Week--John agreed. Dr. Robert wasn't on the US version, I would pick Love You To. John agrees with you on Pepper: he called Good Morning, Good Morning "garbage". However I've always loved it! And I love George's Indian song Within You Without you even though it's not really a Beatle song. I'd have to say It's Getting Better or When I'm 64 are the weakest (John called the latter "granny music"). Magical Mystery Tour had a few clunkers: Flying, Blue Jay Way, Your Mother Should Know...it wasn't even an actual album; it was an EP with some great singles added. The White Album: Love #9; it's #1 that's boring, especially after hearing the single version. WDWDIITRoad not meant to be a full song; it's a great satirical track. My pick is Honey Pie: more granny music.

I'm glad you made the rule of not including any cover songs on here, because let's be honest - many of them are not exactly the Beatles' finest work. That being said, I agree with most of your picks, though some of them like "Doctor Robert" and "Flying" are genuinely good songs. For the non-album singles, I would have picked "The Inner Light" over "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)". That track sounds more like something from one of George's solo albums than a true Beatles song, and it's not really enjoyable to listen to in my opinion, especially compared to "You Know My Name" which is a fun novelty song.

My disagreements: 1. What You're Doing is a GREAT song. It didn't deserve to be in the bottom 2 of it's album. 2. You Like Me too Much is a very enjoyable song because of the piano. You lost me at "When I Get Home" - great propulsive and innovative early Lennon rocker with an adventurous harmonic structure and clever lyrics - a favorite track on the LP for me. Can anyone fathom how great Sgt. Pepper's would've been if they'd left off Fixing A Hole, and Lovely Rita, and closed side one with Penny Lane, started side two with Strawberry Fields Forever, and crossfaded Strawberry Fields into a truncated 3:45 edit of Within You Without You? Had they done that, Pepper would be hands down the greatest album of all time beyond all measure.
