I was always sad about the Corvus Cabal. They are so cool and funny but the only guy that can do their *trick* does it…. Doesn’t kill anything…. And then immediately gets obliterated in every game they’re used in.

This is the way…and it’s a sad way indeed. Funnily enough, 2 factions in this video who don’t have a flying theme, have full-faction access to flying abilities as well. Just to rub it in a bit more

The Worse Warband is my favourite warband, it kind of gives a challenge and find ways to take on those heavy hitting teams. But then it is just me liking a casual game.

So true about compendium vs boxed warbands. I've found that when my mates and I play using only boxed warbands we have a lot of fun and the game is less... ridiculous, whereas once the compendium warbands are broken out the game changes complexion. I sort of get the idea that they intended the game to be played with the boxed warbands but want to lure ppl into playing the game by getting them to use their existing AoS minis. And as usual, in the process, shit the bed when it comes to balancing the various factions. Having said that It's still my fave GW game (alongside Mordheim).

It’s an amazing game, but compendium does warp the game around it a lot of the time. It’s unfortunate that Warcry is so niche as to require the compendium as a draw, since skill Team operates entirely off bespokes now. I genuinely wonder if Warcry will follow suite at some point

I think this is an easy fix with a simple agreement within the group. This campaign we are just playing bespokes duking it out in carngrad for a chance to buy tickets to see archaeon in the eightpoints, and next campaign we can bring the gloomspite and other AOS freaks to play in whatever setting Philbert asked about last week when we were murdering a few currys. I dont envy having to attempt to balance that many mini profiles though. You know that's a nightmare of a task, and considering how massive that is, I am shocked they didnt do worse, frankly.

What a coincidence I was just thinking about how undercooked the Hunters of Huanchi are and how they dont sell the fantasy of the units themselves.

The only reason they aren’t on this list is because OffMetaMusings managed to catapult them to competitive success after a year of grinding. They have play - it’s just most the box is crap haha

@@wargamesontoast Yeah, if you convert the blowpipe guys to Haunchi's claws, there's play there for sure. It's astonishing how bad the blowpipe guys are compared to the claw.

Yes, off meta had success.. But as noted, not with the box as purchased, but a heavy kitbash with many Huanchis Claws.. The box 'as is' definitely loses to most of this list.. Those blow pipes redefine useless

Yeah if a bespoke is 90% kinda uplayable its not a great box. I will houserule the blowpipe profile to 12” 4 1 1/2, feels kinda good, sells the body full of small darts fantasy

Bespoke warbands are actually my favorite. So much theme. Compendium stuff is competitive but shallow on theme and usually end up busted. I also like that some boxed options are just lackluster, it lends to more cool situations, like when a pawn takes a queen.

I have a box of cypher lords, they’re built but I haven’t started painting them yet because they’re so bad in game. I love their aesthetic though, really hoping for a rework someday!

Playing them against similarly powered bespokes is a lot of fun. They tend to die in most other matchups

I pre-ordered a box of Cypher Lords along with my 1st edition starter box back in 2019 and they were my main warband throughout 1st edition. They don't get much use any more, sob, counter and the move 5 tax have really done a number on them.😭

I have to agree with the picks shown. My biggest regret is the Claws of Karanak. I've been liking the Khorne theme lately and have been trying to mix these models with the models in the compendium, but it's hard. Regards.

The Claws got shafted hard. They have some cool tricks but lack the model quality to really pull it off. I really feels like GW went and mastered the “hunting pack” theme with later warbands and the a Claws have kind of been left in the dust

They are GORGEOUS but shockingly expensive in terms of points. Lots of Doomfire Rings and Crossbows could probably do something from time to time..maybe…

Khainite Shadowstalkers have a similar problem like the Nighthaunt. 6 move Mobile fighters with high attack, low defense are not point-efficient with the current algorithm. Also you are paying extra points for worthless abilities on chaff, which makes them a worse plague monk. (yes, the disengage triple, which should give a free action at least) The Warlocks are still good, they have a huge threat range with 6 move. The leader also has an impact, you can put the damage anywhere you like. 13:35

Shadowstalkers are a faction I really like, but they are paying a massive premium for movement 6. As far as I am aware, stats and abilities all go into a models points cost, so some expensive chaff are only that expensive because they are paying a hefty ability tax

@@wargamesontoast They are also my favourite warband. But they were nerfed hard in Hearth of Ghur. Before the Slaugthershades could kite with their 4 range attack at least, which was changed to 3. I hoped that they get some model variety with the Bladeborn warband, but GW gave the profiles to the DoK faction instead. Which was a huge mistake.

I run all of those warbands, but I do it in a narrative environment, isolated from competitive lists. But then again, the majority of bespoke warbands work best in such a way anyways. Anyways, when played in that way, they are a lot more viable and fun to engage with, because everyone is nearly equally hamstrung together. Thats not to say I don't love playing AOS warbands, but I still give preferred campaign play to the bespokes. The disparity isnt as bad as it was in V1, but isolating them from each other is still not a bad idea, especially when eeking out the most thematic bang for your buck in the eightpoints.

@@wargamesontoast yesterday I had a pyrrhic victory with them Vs Blacktalons. Beat them by 6 points, but no kills and 2 Chameleons remained. Twas the "high ground" objective.

Have fully converted and undercoated Cyphers and Tarantulos with all the options, 15+ model warbands with everything. But they cant seem to move up the painting queue... :-) Maybe as a teaching warband against beginners...

These warbands are all great against other 1st edition bespokes, and could do well in a “one box vs one box” format, but they will absolutely struggle to go beyond that sadly. They all have gorgeous models though!

GW should rework all these bespoke boxes to make them competitive

It wouldn’t take make much, but too much could be disastrous. They can’t really make them cheaper since each box should hit close to 1k. What they can do is make them more competitive in terms of stats. A huuuuge issue with these warbands in this list that most of them have high speed and awful defenses and/or damage. Since they are bound to the 1k limit, it COULD lead to models that are too powerful for the number of models a single box could run. Brood has 13 models in their box. Buffing all their stats could skyrocket them into something rather nasty if done wrong. A Tome Of Champions is needed to rebalance a good deal of Warcry though. The tax on movement has lead to a very specific meta that favours slow movement and insane stats. Look at Paladins with Starsoul Mace and compare that to the 15W Cypher Lord. Night and day in power levels.

@@wargamesontoast But you forgot one moment, spire tyrants cost more than 1000 point
