Winona Is Such a confusing character to play in don't starve.
What she wants and needs are very convoluted But even so she still may be the best character in DST She is just the worst at it.

I still really like the changes Uncompromising Mode introduces to Winona: A toolbox to carry tools and her machines, and faster working while not hungry, but slower when starving, rather than the somewhat strange system Klei has now. Really, those are the main things. The toolbox, and rework of her quick work mechanic. They actually impact her day-to-day play, as she can bring along more tools than most people, rather than filling her inventory with basic resources to make more, _and_ doesn't need to stress her inventory with her machines! The work mechanic is also really nice. Have some lunch and you can pick a whole field of saplings and grass lickity-split, but if you're low on food you will suffer. She also works more efficiently with tools when topped up on hunger, letting her tools last longer, and conversely she's more careless, making her tools wear out faster and be slower when she's hungry. The electrical upgrade kit for miner's hats and lanterns is also nice, especially now as an addition to the... 2? items which use electricity in the vanilla game (Not counting actual placed machines, though does that exclude Winbot, too?).

Winona needs more stuff to craft. She’s the crafting character but only makes one unique thing: catapults. Everything else is just a knock off of existing items like a campfire, telelocator, or wobot. And the fact her tree doubles down on “just catapults” is a crime

as a hardcore wanda main, i wanted to try out new characters and honestly? winona has been fun. late game her lunar alignment just makes annoying bosses or mechanics super easy and fun and I like that, I just wish they expanded on her more and gave her way more tools instead of just two*

Agreed, like it or not. Some of us just like that whole "make stuff battle for you" kinds playstyle. And if thats your style, winona is a pretty big win. I mean, unless you like spiders or hearing glorp glorp a copius amount.

@@CatLover-lk9gz my world is over 8k days, i've tried countless playstyles and I adore the ability to delete bosses and enemies without having to do much work, it makes the game easier and the setup much more rewarding. i still occasionally swap characters to try something new but I like winona atm, though I agree with what DVG said winona needed

Since her beta reveal it was a lot of fun to play and test her skills and still have more or less positive attitude but yeah she could be even better and have most of her skills as basekit. Compared to WX refresh aka public execution back in the days - at least Winona's skill tree opened a character to me that wasn't an option before. Now we wait for the robot to be revived hopefully

Yeah thats the plan. I wanted to do each of these character videos by looking directly at what each character can do on thier own. Every character brings thier own experience that people tend to miss out on or they hear that x is better and never give the characters a chance.

i %100 agree with this. more toys for winona would be welcome. i was hoping they would add a way for her to repair damaged combat gear one time per item, less efficient on magic items

i agree, all characters should have access to ALL their abilities and the skill tree should add on to those abilities to make them stronger. her skill tree is pretty bad i won’t lie. after getting her tools, she kinda becomes a useless character, she’s just someone i’d switch to to build farms and then switch again which is very unfortunate because winona could be much more. nice video :)

She's a ok character in my opinion . She can probably solo any boss with prep time like Batman. And I would really like to see her get some new abilities besides catapults. Maybe a niter or wood powered chainsaw that's faster than woodie with a lot of DPS but you take one log or 0.25 niter per tree or something like that. How about a part of the skill tree for fighting and farming. Her collection robot's now can dig up stumps and weeds if they are close to them . Her spot light could stun enemies by shining a light in their eyes. I'm just a woodie main so probably don't do exactly what I said.

As someone who absolutely adored playing as Wagstaff in the base game, I adore Winona's skill tree. Rechargable Telebrellas is all I needed to hear. Though the other skills shouldn't be undervalued. Being able to carry a reusable heat source in your pocket, substitute nitre for the ever-abundant nightmare fuel, a moveable thumper, etc. Something not mentioned (maybe it was changed before and I never noticed) but definitely impactful is the fact that her catapults don't damage walls anymore. Meaning that Winona can fight Dragonfly and Bee Queen much more comfortably now. Splumonkey, pig, bunny, tallbird, and possibly even frog farms can also be made with just walls now as well. I'm curious to see how her telebrella will work against the Ancient Fuelweaver's bone prison too. Might be able to save having to use a Lazy Explorer. While a lot of Winona's skill tree was essentially just a character rework, I think she still gets brought up to a level of power comparable to the other characters' skill trees by the time you have 15 points.

Honestly Winona always has been a kind of boring character to me, after the rework and skill tree i could only see her as the "hound trap" upgrade character/boss cheeser. And before those updates i felt like she was just a neat Wilson sidegrade, overaul i don't think i ever seen her as a extremely fun character, specially because you need at least a in-game year to start doing the fun stuff if you ain't a speedrunner. But honestly it dosen't matter to me because i think she's pretty hot.

Something I wish was on the tree was a perk for trusty tape. I think it would be cool if you could use it to repair some of the basic tools instead of it just being a one time use sewing kit.

A both Interesting and stupid fact about Winona: if you pre-build a catapult but don't place it, then take the portability perk, it will replace the catapult recipe and completely forget the one you pre-crafted, meaning you used the materials for absolutely nothing.

a lot of issues you mention aren't just Winona issues, but more of fact skill trees are made rather badly. concept itself would work, but often there is a lot of nothing perks. good example would be also wigfrid , or wolfgang, or even wilson and his torch skills. they are so meaningless that you could remove them and nothing of value would be lost. probably only characters with skill trees done well are willow, i actually ended up liking this fire witch, wormwood and maybe woodie, though he also have issues.

Honestly i feel they should add a new branch that allows her to make her items mobile like a catapult backpack or hat (hat-apult)and or portable drone versions of her build and like maybe a generator or tesla backpack that charges your drones or zaps nearby enemies

Ive never understood the “this perk should base kit” argument. It basically is base kit since you can get it by day 3, and instantly if youve played winona before. Why does it matter if its base kit or not if its a skill you have to get anyways?

The difference is Characters with abilities should be better than other characters at using their own abilities. winona is at the same level as other characters without skills. The only difference being she can build the items. She needs to have something more unique to her items than just being able to build them. like wigfrid every character can use her battle spear. But only she can get that spear to be past 50 damage. thats the benefit soely to playing her with her crafts.

Its pretty annoying to waste skill points on something that SHOULD be base kit, whats the point in adding all these cool things to spend your skill points on, if half of the time you can't even spend em on what you wanna spend em. Did they upd skill point gain, last I remember it was 10 days

But it is an issue because it really affects balance in how klei makes the skill trees So far every character has been exactly the same before and after their skill trees so you can play a skillless character and it'll be exactly the same as before however because Winona's gear was changed they had the opportunity to make her unique to her equipment. That would give her incentive to be played beyond the skill tree. The interesting thing about this is that Winona still is at the same strength of any other character with her own equipment without skills which kind of doesn't make sense with how other characters work And just following the rules klei placed if a certain item is central to a characters playstyle but other characters can use it that item should be better off in in original characters hands by default like how Bernie or Abigail benefit the team slightly but they give more to thier own characters at base without bonus investments. If this skill tree would be released for other characters that skill tree point that you think is not valuable would go to making big Bernie or Wendy's bonus with Abigail which is not a good use of skill points that can be used to Foster different play styles for the character. Which I think should be one of the goals for the skill trees. Not just add basic utility that should already be part of the character. It also leads to Lazy design because then characters are now just getting points to make themselves usable instead of getting points that boost what they can already do . I could go on about how this is bad by using other characters as examples imagine if Wolfgang's gym was not base kit and you had to spend skill points for it imagine if wortox could not actually suck up Souls and you had to spend points to get it imagine if crafting Wigfrid's basic armor was something you have to get from skill points or Wanda's unique clocks instead of building upon something that's established you're just adding gimmicks that's why this is bad

I just think she is still as boring as she was previously. I think most other characters take some interesting spin to DST combat and with Winona you just stand back, spam clicking at your target and uhhh...have fun watching big number kill big enemy real fast? Taking Wendy as an example, I like how achieving her higher damage output requires some amount of skill with manouvering and positioning Abigail. On Winona this skill is replaced with a redious grind and transporting sets of catapults in wraps each time you go kill a boss...

I have a few thoughts about Winona as a whole. I do hate how she's much weaker in the early game then she was before the update, (which isn't helped by the skills that feel like filler skills) and all of the really fun parts of her kit aren't until much later into the game. The major catapult changes being locked behind the shadow and lunar quest is unfortunate to me because that means that anyone who doesn't make it that far into the game for whatever reason will never even get to tryout the new catapults. I also feel like the Wobot and bridges being added to the game makes some of her skills a bit redundant. Sorry for the long comment. All in all I think her skill tree didn't fix some of her inherit problems and made some even worse.

It's more about when catapults take aggression since most enemies walk straight up to the catapults they don't fire because they're out of range

No offense, but she doesn't need to get looked at again. They did a great job on this skilltree. Your criticism basically boils down to: "I have to actually play the game, before I can get strong". A lot of the issues you mention are solved by just learning to play the survivor for a bit.

But warly and wicker are the same way and I like how they play. The difference being they can build into their power while Winona despite having all of this can't build into her power she's a great character but she is the worst at being one which is why I suggest she have another look

Wait you think the lunar quest is annoying ??? Also nah she doesn't need further buffs, yes she is nothing without her tools thats the point, her tools are busted op so making her strong without them would just completely break her as a character... Like increase attack speed after crafting ??? Dude you might as well delete the other characters at this point XD I dont think you understand how op attack speed buff is and why klei hasn't implemented a weapon like that, just look at the item switch glitch... If they ever do that it will be for some post rift raid boss weapon, on top of that even if its just mining and choping speed its still op as she will take over woody's nieche Winona overall is a great character as she is, maybe small tweaks but definitely not a buff like that

But she won't? I've seen attack cancelling and it's really not as cracked as you may think. She won't replace woodie cause woodie already chops fast and has double efficiency winona would still need double the work this is soely to create a Winona portion of the tree since the player has to choose which way they want to go either good early game with shadow and Winona skills or better late game with lunar skills it makes a good balance and doesn't give nothing skills for stuff that exits now

@@DVGMedia1 but Winona does have a niche in combat... That niche is called "putting down 10 catapults and erasing enemies out of existence" so what else do you want her to have ??? Yes attack canceling is busted OP and I don't know what makes you think otherwise so giving her that as something she can just pull off on top of her already insane catapults is just straight up madness... You might as well just not fight the bosses anymore just make her delete any boss she looks at instantly "which by the way she can do that too with the shadow affinity but I'm not gonna dive into that rabbit whole cause it will get patched"

Im thinking like gunslinger on engi for tf2 You get more self sustaining powers vs having really strong turrets. And most of her farming doesn't come untill later in the world which is fine for woodie

but its not? I showed she can do so much. Based on what side you go she benefits different parts of the game. The thing is that she only gets these unique things from the last parts of her skill tree. And most of the time has no access to them until late game. Her skill tree is needed to make her better at what she is already supposed to do. When that should just be the base kit. Without the skill tree She should already be better at using her gadgets than other characters. Like how willow is innately fireproof and already could do fire tech and so her skill tree builds up on that. All winona had for her innate powers was that she could build the gadgets which would be fine if they didn't change how generators and catapults worked. They changed them to implement systems of the skill tree. Which innately made winona and her gear worse than before the update.
