I actually really liked some of the books on this list (The Familiar, Academy for Liars, and A Study in Drowning), but I’m not shocked to see them here. But I love the vanilla coffee analogy for Emily Henry’s books! I’ve read People We Meet on Vacation and Funny Story, and I finished both feeling severely underwhelmed by the characters, especially the love interests.

I didn't even make it through the first chapter of An Academy for Liars. The author kept conflating Denver and Boulder, and I didn't see the point of reading someone who insisted on writing a setting she knew nothing about.
@citydweller9918 күн бұрын
I think the biggest problem with your #1 book was that it was almost too sedate compared to his previous books, and the era and setting of the story would only appeal to those of us that lived during that time (90s suburbia in the states). However, I quite enjoyed the book and my only complaint was that it shouldn't have been a mystery.. but a general fiction book instead.

Ok so I love the Princess Diaries books because they're absurd and I like the characters a little better, don't get me wrong love the first disney movie a lot but I feel like they really watered down Mia's character and also kind of whitewashed her friend group however I agree, the age gap in Mia and Michael's relationship gives me the ick completely and I'm pretty sure Meg Cabot has said she regrets making Michael that old 😭 but she did initially write the book as a parody and the princess element was added to make it YA so if you see it from that persepctive it sort of makes sense. I prefer Avalon High when it comes to Meg Cabot's book and the love interests are thankfully the same age 😅

When I was a 14 year old girl, I didn't think of myself as a child. I felt like a woman, and was only interested in older guys, or even adult adults. The Girl's magazines in the year 2000 were wild. They literally told us, that older guys have more experience in bed and that's why we should ditch Boys our age. xD Times were different back then, I guess.

Ava Reid isn't for me, I've tried too many of their books now and been disappointed. You are not alone in that. I was also severely disappointed in The Familiar because Leigh Bardugo is one of my favorite authors but that book was so boring. Another book I was SO disappointed with was I Was a Teenage Slasher. It was terrible! It had no point. One of Our Kind by Nicola Yoon was also awful. The ending was so bad. It made the whole book seem pointless. I also read and hated Ghost Station and Empire of the Vampire :hides: I know you like EotV Gavin, but it read so misogynistic and the humor felt like middle schoolers wrote it. But its ok, I enjoyed Middle of the Night so we are even haha. Though I am gonna go watch your vid where you talk about why it was trash, who knows maybe you'll change my mind. This was a fun watch!

I did a wedding themed vlog right before going to my brother’s wedding and listened to Nothing But Blackened Teeth because Libby had it so I could get it quick and free. The only reason I just thought it was fun goofy time was because I read a review saying it was cliche and the characters were such massive stereotypes so I went in with this is basically a SYFY movie and I was cracking up, which ummm probably isn’t how I was supposed to react to it 😂

I totally agree. I like Emily Henry's writing style, but I tend to not care for her characters. However, if you haven't tried it yet, I would recommend trying Funny Story. It was the only one I truly enjoyed, both the story and the characters. She's definitely not a spice romance writer, more like a fluff romance writer. So, if that's not your jam, I wouldn't read her books. Also, I have Zodiak Academy, and I am terrified to read it after your review earlier in the month 😳😂 Noooo I just bought A Study in Drowning with the book looking sprayed edges 😭

@Kringlebert It is. The main FMC characters because ridiculously overpowered and she writes them as they could do no wrong and their love interests lose their personality. I personally could not relate to these FMCs because they seem stuck up once they became powerful. I told my husband if you try to make your life revolve around me like these mmcs I will leave him 🤣 The side characters are waaay more interesting.
