The worst character introduced in each Street Fighter game

Every numbered Street Fighter game has brought a handful of brand new characters to the franchise, and while some wind up becoming instant hits with fans, others can and have been total duds.
We're taking a look at the newcomers of Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter Alpha, SF3, SF4, and SF5 and discussing who the worst from each is.

El Fuerte and Abel are both Saturday night Slammasters inspired. I would say that hakan is probably worse, most his moves are contact and timing, Fuerte has speed and mobility to help, Abel can interrupt with his throws and his moves command into variants. Hakan needs timing and struggles against most characters.

@@joecoolmccall decapre is pretty good, especially with her omega mode version, where she is vastly better and has faster attack options compared to her regular version and she has a near invisible projectile.

Deejay has actually always been cool to me. I like his moveset and personality a lot, and he's fun to play as. He's literally just a chill upbeat guy who likes to fight, have fun, and make music. He's one of my favorite characters in SF. Not every character needs to have an amazing or deep story, especially in a fighting game. I actually liked that his goal wasn't "revenge" or "be the strongest", or any of the other tired cliche tropes fighting game characters usually have for a story. It's refreshing. For me the "worst" characters in each SF game are: SF2: T. Hawk: I have always found him extremely dry and boring on all accounts SF Alpha: Juni/Juli: Useless throwaway Cammy clones with nothing interesting about them SF3: Twelve: Lame moveset and a very weird design that doesn't fit with the SF cast, he'd have fit much better in Darkstalkers SF4: Rufus: Everything about Rufus is awful: his voice, his story, his design, personality, etc etc SF5: Abigail: His design is terrible and he has an extremely obnoxious personality, he's like a 10 year old in a giant's body

I always liked Deejay, his style and his move set. He felt like a more nimble Guile with more options. I just wish he did a hair more damage. But when I was a kid, I remember using pause to frame by frame his animations in Super because I thought they looked so cool.

Twelve is definitely the worse character in Third Strike. He just doesn't fit street fighter at all, and is literally a blank slate. I could see Remy coming back with some new drip, along with a reworked moveset and personality to be a modern day edgelord though🤣

I would like to see Remy again, maybe even more in metal scene :p I know this is not Guilty gear and France is not really known for metal, but still a nice addition. Maybe he should be Finnish XD

I actually have the opposite opinion. The benefit of 12 being a blank slate is that the developers could just do whatever they want with them and could easily just come up with an upgraded version of them and call it 13 with a different different designs kinda like 11 from 5. The problem with Remy is that he has no ties to plot of Street Fighter and I can’t imagine why he even be a part of it if he hates fighting in general. Plus I think most players would rather have Guile over Remy any day since Remy only existed as a Guile stand-in.

El fuerte is shown in the udon comic as being a good chef when he sticks with the basics and what he knows, t Hawk has his food and its so good it stops them from fighting. you also see Elena enjoying his food in their ending. Rufus is a worse character. he denied us King Cobra. yall gotta stop hating my boy Fuerte

@@lpvgs-817 I actually LIKE Luke. His win quotes show him to be a pretty decent guy. Not only that but his look in the SF6 trailer looks MUCH better than the overdesigned look his default has in SF5 Hopefully we see King Cobra in SF6. Would be great. Rufus is just an inferior Bob (tekken)

T Hawk - The only interesting thing about him is the lack of a whiff animation on his command throw enabling the "Sako tick". His SF2 design overlaps Zangief too much. Adon - Annoying VA Remy - Dishonorable mention for 12 El Fuerte - If this list had one character, it would be him Laura - Vortex grappler with decent mobility plus a fireball. Hard pass.

I honestly disagree with some of the characters on this list. The problem with most fighting games in general is that the story centers around a criminal organization or Evil corporation or good versus evil in general. Street Fighter Virtua Fighter Killer Instinct Tekken Mortal Kombat Now before you get mad I want to be clear that none of these franchises are bad because of story, but those types of stories are so predictable that it prevents the designers from getting creative with their characters because they all have to contribute to the main plot. But it's a fighting game at the end of the day. It's not a movie or T.V. show. Tell me you want to play Street Fighter V story mode for a second time then tell me you want someone like Rufus or El Fuerte teaming up with Chun LI and Guile to stop Shadaloo or S.I.N. . That's why I say let Dee Jay keep finding musical inspiration by fighting people. Let El Fuerte wrestle and cook. Let Sodom be a Japanese Cultural fan. I'd rather have Capcom bring back these characters and maybe try and develop them instead of giving us new characters that we will probably hate even more. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and this is a good video but it frustrates me that no one has even considered story in general in fighting games. (Edited) Also El Fuerte was and still is fair compared to Vanilla Sagat.

Fair enough. Thanks for watching and responding with this much detail! As to your points, fighting game characters serve a higher purpose than their story contributions at the end of the day, and getting them all under one roof and contributing meaningfully to one narrative is hard/near impossible. We critique it because we're fans and it's fun to get invested on this level, but you're not wrong that some can just be off doing their own thing and also be available on the character select screen. We hold them to higher standards for explorations/comparisons like in this video, but not everyone cares as much (nor do they necessarily need to) when it comes to legitimacy of story.

When you talk about El Fuerte being not a very Street Fighter character, I can't understand. He's just like Blanka. A character made annoy the opponent. If Blanka has a proper place in SF, El Fuerte is not far from this place too. And I mention this as a person who hates El Fuerte.

SFII- I like Dee Jay, but I can see how you would place him on the list. I would have learned towards T. Hawk. Gameplay wise, Dee Jay is decent on tier list in ST, so I think many people wanted that back when he arrived in SFIV. But yes, his story needs to be ret-conned, or at the least, having something of value added to it. He is sort of a blank slate, so you could add to him. SFA- I would have perhaps selected one of the dolls, but I don't play the game enough to really have an opinion. SFIII- I main Remy, and like Twelve, but can see the perspective. I think the roster in SFIII is unique, so overall, the "worst" in SFIII is better than compared to many of the new characters in other entries in the series. I have been wanting both of the characters reworked for a future SF game (but please keep Remy charge...). As for 12, he was always about the gameplay and his animations. He would be pretty epic in the new RE engine that we see being used in SF6. SFIV - my pick would have been Rufus. I HATE Rufus. Full stop. El Furte I actually enjoy watching. SFV- I would have chosen between Abigail and FANG...and would have learned towards Abigail.

Dee Jay, Fei-Long, Evil Ryu, Guile and T.Hawk were in an arcade version of Alpha 3, but it was Upper not regular, that's why when most people think competitive Alpha 3, those characters do not come to mind, since arcade Upper was a Japanese release only up until Alpha Anthology on the PS2 (which was 2005-6ish I believe). Also, the thing about Dee Jay is, in what perspective are we looking at? because if we're just talking about the SF2 series, Dee Jay would probably be the second most popular newcomer after Akuma, if we're talking past the SF2 series or put emphasis on story relevancy then sure, he should probably be the worst, but I think T.Hawk gives him serious competition, personally I might've gone with him instead of Dee Jay.

I said in SF2 only, Dee Jay is more popular than Cammy and Fei-Long, because Fei-Long and Cammy are really weak characters in ST (Cammy is the worst character in the game), which is the competitive standard in that series, while Dee Jay was a decent character, no sh*t he's the least popular newcomer from SF2 throughout the entire series overall. @Nicolas Moreno Yes it does, if you have Anthology, go play Alpha 3 on it, beat the game once, go back to the menus and hold select while choosing Alpha 3, you'll be playing Upper.

I don't know how anyone can look at SFV and not conclude that Abigail isn't the worst character in the game. Not only should he not come back for future games, he should be deleted from time. He pushes the aesthetic from the exaggerated into the absurd and his story content is less than nothing.

@@gipgap4 theres merit to that but i think for 3 it works. The whole initial premise for 3 was to create a whole new roster and the next generation. Ya some characters were a bit unique but they fit the vibe of the game and that new generation premise. For 4 they introduced a cast of characters that just dont fit in the world of sf ie hakan with his stupid hair and oil, rufus, el fuerte and onward. They freaking fired ono who was in charge of 4 and 5 because clearly they didnt like the direction he went with anything

Yes Hakan and Fuerte we're bad (Fuerte is subjective though, that boy has a fanbase), but Juri was and is 💯 evil waifu winner material. She's basically a lock for every street fighter from now on. Name me one character new to third strike that has that level of mass appeal? Also Abel was a great addition to the roster. Sf5 has the most forgettable characters of them all though..Abigail, Akira, Zeku, Falke, yuck!

Sf 3 had makoto, hugo, dudley, ibuki, yun and yang and elena that all get love.keep in mind sf3 was a wayyy less popular game than sf4 sales wise so some of the following for individual characters may not Be as big Obviously its a bit subjective, the duds in sf3 may be forgettable but none were "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!" like some of those sf4 and 5 designs

Tbh, some exceptions aside, I still prefer the cast of newcomers (both completely new characters and existing characters who are playable for the first time) prefer the characters introduced in SF3-SF5 than the ones in SF2-SFA. SF2 characters all come across as generic and cliché and despite being here in the franchise for so long, they barely got any significant changes to them outside of design. SFAlpha was okay but no one really was a super fav of mine SF3-SF5 overall has solid new characters, with a few blemishes here and there such as Yun & Yang, Necalli, Kolin, Rufus, Laura, Luke and whatnot, but they also gave me pretty cool characters, either in concept, in gameplay, or both, such as F.A.N.G., G, Poison, Makoto, Dudley, Q, Juri, Seth, compared to the older games where Alpha had some cool ones for me while SF2 only really had Akuma and Cammy

Agree with almost all of these but for SFII, it's definitely T-Hawk IMO. I might even place Fei Long lower than Dee Jay or maybe at the same level. When SSFII released, Dee Jay was a very popular pick in the arcades and he was considered top tier in that game at the time. He definitely resonated with people more than T-Hawk ever did/will.

Everyone has their own opinion, but as far as I remember V-ism Sodom was commonly accepted as a, if not the, top tier character in SFA3 with a lot of tournament wins due to his surprisingly fast attacks with stupid large hitboxes. Also he uses dual katanas in FF and X-ism instead of the jittes so his localization name is whatever. I personally loved the cringe and off-putting weaboo story and found it interesting, but I also wouldn't argue against him being on the list either because I don't think most people wanted to play as him

Has anyone seen Saint Seiya (Knights of the Zodiac in NA)? I never noticed till now, but Remi's backstory is similar to the character Hyouga, only it's his mother that is dead and is frozen in ice under the sea. He swims down to visit her grave frequently, like Remi is doing in his ending. His personality is cold and dispassionate as well, at least in the beginning. Design-wise, I always thought Remi looked like he was about to whip out a duel disk and challenge someone to a children's card game rather than a street fight, so it's a toss up for me between him and Necro for who fits least, as Necro looks like he would fit Guilty Gear or BlazBlue better.

I think if you're going to begrudge Sodom for his weapons, you'd have to say the same for claw. I don't think Sodom's weapons are what make him lame, his move set just sucks. I'd love to see him come back completely reimagined, with like one carryover move.

Remy's the character from SFIII that's least likely to ever return. He may be more fun to play than Twelve, but he's a Guile/Charlie type character, so you have two other characters who could replace him, and both of them are more popular. On the other hand, Twelve is as least memorable as a character, even if he's not fun to play. Remy's basically a (really) poor man's Ash Crimson.

Can't agree more with the list. Some characters from the SF series may not stand the test of time due to cultural sensitivities. Even with that said, having Capcom create a Street Fighter with every single character from the series, even if it is not a direct sequel but an "All Star" game would be neat. Another great ep guys!

disagree with some of the choices as i love dee jay(especially in the animated movie/his alpha theme.:3) and if anything think t. hawk is the worst 2 newcomer(his stories pretty cliche and outside his wife being a doll which makes her being saved in 5 heartwarming that they will reunite he's just kinda boring.),for alpha i like sodom and rolento/vega already broke the realism of using weapons in a fighting tournament and is a good joke character(would say he's better than blanka and dan kinda goes to being too pathetic at times.) being the balance to cody's fall with how he started the mad gear gang redeeming themselves. while sean storywise is more closer to a more competent dan(still more badass/has his heart in the right place compared to him at least and was an awesome way of showing 3rd strike's urban theme that i hope 6 brings back.) than new generation sakura(& thought his sister laura matsuda was way better.) i liked 12 giving a glimpse of the illuminati's goals(11 is worse as he should've been a different character.) and remy's the worst 3 character as he's just a shameless rip off of iori(who at least had reasons for hating kyo/isn't as much of a jerk deep down compared to others like gato or even k' at points with how pretty tragic his situation is and can show care for others.) along with his goal/personality making no sense for the games feel and his gameplay just gives more reason for why guile/older characters should've been brought back instead of a character replacing him. while i feel el fuerte was a bit stereotypical and only liked his love of r. mika in the comics as well as befriending elena rufus(unless he had his king cobra design.)/decapre(a pointless cammy clone with a horrible trailer introducing her when we already had a cammy ripoff with abel who only exist/alongside honestly most of guile's story to foreshadow charlie's return and am glad neither are playable in 5.) is worse and for 5 abigail is the worst(should've been hugo/mike haggar and outside roxy's return & ibuki/juri's reactions to him even for a joke character has no relevance compared to poison.) as while falke/neo shadaloo don't have much right now outside being ed's partner,necalli should've been saved for 6 with how pathetic he was in 5's story(should've changed it to him absorbing peoples powers instead of souls as it was obvious that wasn't going to happen.) abigail is a waste and capcom's trying way too hard(imo even more than alex.) to make luke the new lead when it should be sakura(definitely should've been in the kof all star collaboration instead of him.) and make me worry a bit for 6's future than hype, f.a.n.g is definitely better than him as of m. bison's commander's i take him more seriously than vega or balrog(not sagat though.) and am actually interested in that he has an apprentice now to get over bison's death.

I could personally give Remy a chance to shine, SF III at that time wasn’t really that fleshed out even at the latest installment but outside Capcom - it’s always been Ibuki being the star of the new era outshining even Alex who usually was Ryu’s replacement except the passing of the torch failed. And technically speaking he has potential. I guess the devs never touch him so much cause their creative differences gets in the way (like the one host in this video) they couldn’t think of how he can shine as a plot character or how he’ll square off with the rest of the gang (I mean Ibuki likes boys right? So there’s even a potential plot development but it may ended up like Sasuke and Sakura, but we all could develop a better story at this point)

I for one don't want to go and hate most of these characters for I have grown fond for the most of them over the course of time, mostly from watching the movies,anime,comic books and lore for every known Street Fighter. However if I have to pick at least 1 or 2 characters that aren't nessacary is gonna have to be Evil Ryu/Kage( I know shocker). Those characters have nothing to do with the story mode and are just there as alternated versions of Ryu for players to try out and gush over. And In that category I guess you could say the same thing about Oni and Violent Ken as well, just there to please the fanboys of alternate versions of Ken & Akuma. Don't get me wrong I like these characters but they serve no purpose stroywise and are just one offs guest characters(except for Evil Ryu for some reason).

Yo the more i think about it Remy could be a great rival for Luke. The contrast their makes a lot scene Remy hating the idea of fighting actual may work in his favor. Luke literally enjoys fighting almost like a sport so having the too clash would be cool. I feel like in story the character can learn form each other to some degree. I actually see Luke getting Remy to open up as a person lol.

Fuerte's gameplay and personality is great but his physical design is very plain as far as luchadors go. Ed has the makings of a cool character but he comes across as a weirdo due to his default costume designs being wack. I hope Capcom has some new ideas because Ed's core design and concept is pretty cool. Deejay comes across as demented because of his constant insane grin. I always thought of him as "Dan for Guile players." Sodom is neat fusion of Vega and a grappler, plus his different weapons showcased Apha's ISM system. His name is unfortunate. Remy would be cool to bring back from a story perspective. If they bring him back he should remain a late 90s anachronism. Falk and FANG can remain in the garbage.

I would throw Oro, Sean and Alex out before Remy, in that order. But if it was strictly in the context of 3rd Strike newcomers, I would have to toss Remy. Makoto and Q are too cool, and I love Twelve in concept. Can't say I disagree with any of the other picks though. Maybe SF4, only because I dislike almost all of the newcomers aside from Juri. But Fuerte probably deserves it most.

SF2: Blanka. He's a gimmick character that is tedious to interact with. Second is E Honda. SF2 WW: Deejay. His design is awful. He was made to improve black representation? The what? I understand T Hawk, but at least they tried to make a different kind if grappler and his face isn't nightmare fuel. Alpha: Sodom. I dont get the cult following. His character is lame. His story is lame. His playstyle isn't interesting. I wish we'd remove all handheld weapons from SF except for Vega. SF3: Remmy. His high, low booms with an advancing special could be fun in a different SF, but his personality is so insuferable. His story is lame too. I quite like Twelve. Yeah, he was horribly balanced, but his design is fun. A rare case of a fun clone character. Actually, I like every character in SF3 save Remmy. SF4: El Fuerte. SF4 has equally annoying new joke characters storywise (Rufus and Hakan), but his game play was so obnoxious. Yes, watching a random Fuerte match in top 8 can be fun, but he was still awful. Rufus is probably 2nd. His kit was actually fun without being overpowered (fairly rare for dive kick characters in SF) but there are plenty of characters that play similiar and I don't need to see their happy trail. Ugh. I understand dumb characters can be funny, but Capcom really doesnt have the writing chops for them. Just keep Dan as your joke character. Hakan is so bad that he boomerrangs back around to be being decent for me. At least they tried some really unique mechanics that were interesting to fight against. Hot wife meme also funny SF5: Fang. Enough with the joke characters! His voice is one of the worst in the FGC. This is Sagat's replacement for thr 4th general of Shadowloo? Really? I don't mind watching him played, but he is annoying to fight. He makes Bison and his organisation feel like extras for Skeletor. In fact, a character being super “relatable” can be bad sometimes. Take cetrion from mk11 (yes I’m using mk again) she serves her “boss” does majority of the work for her, and wants to please her, because her life depends on it. Sound familiar? Yep, she’s basically a representative of the middle class. In fact, even her death is caused by relatability. She is almost convinced by lui kang to switch sides, but she caves and sticks with her boss in fear of change, and sacrifices herself to kronika. Does anybody want her back for mk12, I don’t think so.

And for the sf2 case, it’s hard, but I’d say that fei long can go, there are way better rekka characters, and in the last game he was in, he felt a little bit redundant with the other INFINITELY more interesting rekka characters. (Yang, Poison, Rolento) Honestly the only reason why people still play him is because 1, he’s bad, and 2, he’s JUST Bruce lee to the point it’s distasteful. Even then there are way more interesting Bruce lee like characters in other fighting games, like lui kang or lee from tekken.

Street Fighter 2 - thawk and deejay. both had goofy designs and sort of redundant of existing characters (guile and gief) Street Fighter Alpha - juni and juli, they feel generic cammy swaps without much thought put into them. Street Fighter 3 - sean, just boring compared to the unusual cast. this game still has the best roster in the street fighter games Street Fighter 4 - el fuerte, decapre, hakan, abel, poison, rufus. this game had the worst newly introduced characters.
