Arden can't cross the mountains in FE4 Ch4, period. The only way to get him to the southern area of the map is to have Azel and Aideen become lovers so you get the Rescue staff and to teleport Arden over the mountains that way.
the snowshovel map would go from arguably the worst map in the series to still bad but not thaaat bad if u could bring a full army. u only get to bring 6 units even tho u have 10, for no reason. it's so baffling. like 10's probably still not enough but u could at least shovel more than once per turn, maybe even spread out a bit if ur feeling frisky. why are there FE7 arbitrary deployment limits in my alleged unit building sandbox game.

You made some great points talking about Conquest's endgame, but I feel like the worst map in the game is Ch19 (the kitsune map). It's a very annoying map with you being unable to player phase the kitsunes most of the time, but it's super easy to cheese by reclassing Xander into a Wyvern Lord and giving him the Beastslayer or just using Benny.

I don't own the DLC and don't plan on buying it or pirating it so I don't think it would be fair of me to rate a map I've never played, plus if Gaiden maps were mostly exempt then you can bet DLC maps would be. But yeah if we were to take maps as a vacuum I've pretty much heard majority negative things about the map design and implementation of the Fell Xenologue, which doesn't exactly fill me with hope for the future of map design in the series if they think those maps were worth an extra 50% of the base game price.

If there was room for one more map, I would have chosen chapter 16x from fe6, The “Glorious” Ascension. This chapter can eat a big, fat cactus. It is a horrible experience being forced to awkwardly shove all your units up tight one tile wide corridors while being constantly pelted by boltings, purges, longbows, and status staves! Another thing is the stupid light lasers that come down, potentially conveniently right through the corridors you’re forced to go through. The best part is, you have absolutely no idea when, where, or how many light lasers will occur each turn! Yaaaaay! As the final shot in the foot, you would naturally think that the newly recruited Douglas would be a terrible choice for this map due to his awful speed and Res. Apparently the game doesn’t think so because he is “force deployed” on turn 1. After going through the bull crap to save him in the previous chapter, this is just insulting. Here! Have a functionally useless unit that you can’t avoid using! There’s not even any good items in this stupid map. All you get is Aureola at the end, which is probably the worst legendary weapon. This map even sucks for grinding supports or exp because of the stupid light lasers and bishops only giving like 2 exp when killed. I know people crap on other maps in fe6 like Arcadia, but at least some optimization can be done to minimize turns taken and thus the suffering you endure. There are no such shortcuts possible in the glorious ascension. You can’t fly through the walls to minimize distance and I don’t believe you have warp at this point in the game. This chapter barely escapes my full wrath because it is technically optional, but this chapter still sucks big time.
@joelkasik84097 ай бұрын
By that point in the game you should have the warp staff since you can get it earlier in Arcadia. With training you should be able to get Saul to warp rank by the time you get to this chapter so you can warp skip 16x cause that is what I often do.

I am surprised by how many no brainers (imo) you didn't nominate here. For FE 7 for example, I would bring up Victory or Death. If any map is guilty of overstuffing itself with tedious waces of reinforcements, it's this one. My least favorite Tellius map appears in both games actually: The Pitfall Bridge. You can only imagine my disappointment when I found out that THIS was the map they were gonna bring back in RD. Also shoutout to that Part 4 desert map for taking me over two hours to finish. For Thracia, I would nominate chapter 11 and put it straight into "Made me Quit the Game", because that is literally what happened. I already didn'r enjoy the game, but getting by ambush ballista reinforcements shortly sfter being locked in a room isn't exactly my idea of fun gameplay. It was also hilarious listening to you two trying to figure out which Gaiden swamp map you had there, because you kept talking past each other and were both wrong on which map it is. That was kinda hilarious.

Conquest endgame is a failure in map design if the answer to how to "have fun" is to find a way to ignore as much of it as possible. It's Also a major issue if the crux to completing the map is almost fully dependent on a limited resources that could have long since been expended

the rainbow sage map in conquest is weird because it's the first time the game throws the 'here's a bunch of bullshit skills you need to read to understand what's going on' trick at you, and after the first few chapters doing a lot of clever stuff with terrain, enemy placement and very judicious skill use, it feels like a cool curveball, balanced out by how the enemies are all isolated in individual puzzle rooms that you can take on at your own pace. then the game throws the 'here's a bunch of bullshit skills you need to read to understand what's going on' trick at you again. and it doesn't stop. ever.

I have similar feelings about CQ endgame. My problem with lunatic is that the game lets you get away with playing like a normal FE and not going for certain skills all the way until 26 and endgame where the game decides that you're screwed if you didn't plan the whole game for them. I really don't think lunatic is all that difficult until then. Every map before 26 is totally doable without having good skill combos. Maps 19-25 all have ways to cheese them that most players will be able to do as long as they have a team of good combat units and some fliers. In my lunatic playthrough, I played without looking up how to get good skills cause I wanted to see if I could beat it on my own. Needless to say I could only barely beat 26 with most of my team dead. And I only had a 6% CoS to beat endgame with a rescue skip since I didn't have life and death to kill Takumi reliably (one of the most miserable grinds of my life). It's completely my fault for trying to beat lunatic without game knowledge, but I still hate 26 and endgame for this reason even if they are technically well designed.

Another thing about 3-P in Radiant Dawn that wasn't covered in the video is its stupidly strict turn limit of I think 7 turns to get max BEXP. You have to storm ahead full throttle and can't slow down the slightest bit to have the GMs reach the end of the map in time, and then even if you do manage it, you'll still often fail to finish within the limit as Skrimir or the other laguz do something dumb that keep Skrimir from reaching the seize point in time, making this objective largely luck-based. It also stands in stark contrast to the BEXP turn limits on other maps in RD, which are often awfully lenient and require no real LTC skills to achieve. As awful as 2-3 and 3-P are though, I still think 2-1 is the absolute worst of Radiant Dawn. Maybe it's tolerable with a Nephenee that has a Strength + Speed transfer, but without it's such an unfun hellhole of a map.

I really really like 3 houses chapter 5. Is it poorly designed in maddening? Yes. Is it annoyingly long? Also yes. But there are 2 things I like about it. 1. The ambush can be almost completely countered by a unit with high defence. Are you blue lions? Push Dedue past the threshold and you’ll be able to eat the hits. I’ve always been a sucker for heavy armour units, so having a place where having one is optimal is very fun 2. This is the only place in the entirety of 3 houses where I was able to use a big aoe gambit, and have an enemy in every square of the aoe. You can effectively hold a massive choke point and clear the entire map by picking off the archers from behind and letting the rest of them pile up
@roboscout6411 ай бұрын
I can definitely get why it's offputting to have the end of a playthrough be ruined by the final map being too hard in conquest and not having the right setup. But personally I feel like it's really nice that there is a map in fates that puts the crazy levels of optimization you can do in fates to use. I feel like fire emblem often has a problem where lategame ends up being a lot easier to the early game. It makes it feel that while you can plan out and build your units, it all feels somewhat pointless in the end as they won't make much of a difference. Part of why I (and many other fates fans) likes it is that the effort you put into the game planning and building units is actually rewarded and you have applications for your built up units.

2:33:00 i heavily agree that the hardest difficulty is often not the best metric to judge a game. Many of the maps you didn't like on later games were also awfulbl because of how the hardest difficulty interacts with them. Frankly, FE doesn't seem to have many good max difficulties that aren't super frustrating. But at the same time once you're experienced how do you judge on a lower difficulty, they're too easy to really tell if a unit or strat is good?

If my memory has not left me for a better man, I believe the rom hack "Princess's Lament" turned the mountain pass chapter from a route to a survive map and it works out pretty well. Kinda help with the extra units you can get, like the brigand/berserker and spider who can hunt people down in the mountains. Really fun rom hack, cool twist in the formal of FE8 story, the implemnetation of stat boosting talks is also something I want to see more of and the new map are not that bad, also made me use classes I normally don't (see the negtives for that). Really ugly sprites, however and the pre-promoted ranger is ASS and I cannot forgive how they butched the summons (If you don't want me making my shamans summoners, please inform me before I use up my promotion item).

Some of the worst maps to me: Fe11 Wooden cavalry: a ton of ballisticians with over lapping range Fe15 Desert stronghold: desert move, and a ton of archers in a reasonably well protected place Fe10 2-1: an rng nightmare. Enemies have random stats that makes doubling possible or not. Most enemies actually have random ai. Both offensive characters have shaky accuracy. Some of the villages are in really bad locations. A lot of 2 range enemies when you only have 1 range weapons Fe13 Shepherds: open map with little places to use much strategy but throw Fredrick at the enemy and hope he lives as everyone else hides in fear Fe16 reunion at dawn: ... enough said. Runner up true chivalry: rodrigue Fe17 the last engage: just way too many reinforcements and the enemies are way to bulky

In Maddening, the trick is to let Gilbert die- easier than it sounds, since the mages hit hard. After that, you'll just need to send a unit out to trigger the ambush, kill the units that come after you and the reinforcements, and the rest of the map is simple.

My Conquest Lunatic run is still sitting in Endgame limbo because I didn't know I was supposed to save Rescues and stuff. I've played Conquest twice before, first time on Hard and second time Normal (tried ironmanning for the first time ever) and so I didn't really think endgame was going to be the issue, I had only ever heard of bad things like Lunatic ch17 (Ninja Hell) and ch25 (Ryoma). I even unashamedly installed a mod that lets you save in the endgame prep screen but I still couldn't do it after hours of trying. I eventually had one attempt where I would've won if I had gotten some slightly better RNG so I think one day I'll just have to play it on Citra with savestates between each turn. Bit of a shame but at least the save is not completely softlocked.

On my only playthrough of Conquest Lunatic (where I didn't do any Rescue/Pass stuff, other than using Rescue to snipe the staff users and then get out), I was actually kind of surprised at how easy killing Takumi himself was. Not easy in absolute terms, but I found dealing with the initial enemies plus reinforcements more difficult. Once I figured out the right tempo to move at to deal with the first, idk, 5 or so turns, things got a lot calmer and I didn't have that much trouble finishing.

Falling Short of Heaving is always fun and difficult to me because of the last turn and assassins mainly but has become easier by just going into the fog and killing the peg reinforcements and assassin reinforcements before they come. It’s not that bad, but I also always pick Azure Moon so maybe it helps to have a good Ashe. The setup of where you put your units before the map starts is the most important part which is sort of unusual in FE and I really appreciate how unique that is. I'm honestly surprised "Reunion at Dawn" didn't make the list. You're forced to use units from your house, start out with just Byleth and your house leader, get the other units at opposite corners of the map and have to deal with surprisingly hard enemies. They should have toned down the enemy difficulty, since you're just killing some bandits squatting in Garreg Mach.

As someone who has only ever done in-house runs of 3H it didn't immediately cross my mind, but this is definitely a combo map & game design issue that they allow players to effectively screw themselves without knowing because even with the time skip auto leveling that's not usually enough to overcome the act 2 difficulty spike.

Conquest Lunatic Endgame is definitely brutal in its difficulty and it's kinda one of the maps where it gets a lot better with experience. It's a map with a fast pace, pushing you to end it in at around 5-7 turns to avoid fighting the reinforcements, but it's able to really pack in a lot of content in those few turns you spend there. You get to revisit familiar concepts from previous chapters like Inevitable End, Staff Savant, and Wary Fighter as well as fight the most challenging enemies from those chapters like Generals, Maids, and Master Ninjas. Contrary to what's said in the video, I don't think it's a map that needs much long-term preparation at all. Most of your main combat units should be maxed out by now and if they're able to handle the threats from previous chapters, they absolutely should also be able to handle the same threats in Endgame. It's moreso figuring out how best to approach the map and how best to use your statboosters and tonics. I've done this map without any Rescue uses and it's more than doable without fancy shmancy builds like Life and Death/Vantage. And, minor correction here, I should point out that Takumi's Bold Stance skill does not prevent you from using dual strikes against him. In general, I think Conquest Endgame really does not deserve its bad rap. I find a lot of its criticisms aren't that it has bad map design, they only focus on the circumstances surrounding the map (the removed save function between it and Chapter 27) and it being "too difficult." As Dani said, Hard Endgame is quite lenient compared to Lunatic and it hits the spot for most players, including those going in blind. So if the difficulty doesn't suit you, you can drop it down and tailor to your own experience. Other Fates things: I'm a bit bewildered by the Birthright picks. Chapters 15 and 22 are nowhere near the worst or the most infamous in Birthright IMO. In terms of the *worst* maps, the entire stretch of Chapters 17 to 21 is host to a lot of Birthright's worst maps, and Birthright Endgame is pretty bad too. In terms of the most infamous, there's Chapter 10 (Ninja Forest), Chapter 23 (Camilla sewers), and Chapter 25 (last Iago map) which are notorious for being difficulty spikes, with honourable mentions to Chapters 14 and 27. It's also kinda surprising that Conquest 19 (Fox den) isn't on the list but I get why it'd be excluded for the sake of pacing. Chapter 11 and CQ Endgame (for its polarizing nature) are already good picks.

"There's very few places (in Twisted Tower) for a Jill or Marcia to stop in" There's enough, though. It's tricky, but you can open a path for your fliers to significantly cut down on the turn count/distance to the objective. Tibarn definitely helps with that as well. Actually, the tougher part is dealing with the dragons blocking your access to the boss. If not for those I'm pretty sure you could 2 or maybe 3 turn it even on 0%.

Because i cannot stfu about my opinions, here are some other egregious maps that couldve made this list; Fe4: Chapter 11; I've already made a comment about why I dislike the endgame chapter of Genealogy, but all I'll say about it is that I used the rescue glitch to give Erys infinite move to deal with the pincer attack of armor knights and cavs, and even then it was not easy at all. Annoying and unfun, bordering on quit the game Thracia: Chapter 12 - The one where you get Mareeta and can recruit Salem; its not the hardest map in the world, but it's a fog of war level with Salem spamming his sleep stave as soon as youre in his range. The brigands aren't too threatening, but if youre not careful with Mareeta and she's attacked by a brigand from the top right corner, bye-bye Mareeta. Salem only has three sleep uses but sleep lasts for the entire map and drops ALL a unit's stats to 0 - hope your unit didnt get stuck in the forest and get hit by the dozen or so bandits! As an aside, the thickets being invisible makes taking any mounted unit a chore of dismounting in the forest, or staying mounted and having two move. Definitely belongs in annoying and unfun. Fe6: Chapter 14- when i first played Binding Blade I'd certainly agree that 14x is more BS than 14... but 14 is definitely the worst map on a blind playthrough. I wont go over everything that sucks about it, but i think its the 2nd worst map of Binding Blade. Fe7: Battle before Dawn. This map took me over 40 takes on NORMAL mode alone. Next! Fe11: Wooden Cavalry; Ballista spam. Need I say more? (I will) I'll admit I've only played it on Normal mode, so I'm gonna assume it's even worse on harder difficulties. The ballistae wall out any DracoKnight that you got unless you reclass them to Paladin, plus the sheer amount of pot shots youll be taking will severely hinder how far a unit can go at a time. Boring for sure I could keep going but I've said my piece. Really hoping we get a best map tier list some time soon!

42:00 Lachesis has actually a pretty easy time at staff training herself in this map, she should be able to promote at the start of chapter 3 with just arena + staff training. - This map has an excess of gold and Dew can toss it around - Sylvia is automatically recruited and in this map she won't be able to keep with the cavalry anyway, so she should go help staff training duties, doubling the rate of the exp gains. Any player that already knows about all the secondary objectives of the map (be it by previous playthroughs or reading/watching guides) should probably have some grasp about staff training. Honestly I think you are bashing Chapter 2 way too much (beyond the green cross knights RNG-suiciding themselves before you can save them, that's definitely bad design): it's a fast paced map with million of different objectives, but nothing horrible will happens if you fail some of them (it's not like you risk soft locking yourself in a future chapter), you can play it blind going slow and win without any big issue. You will probably make lots of mistakes and miss most items, but that's fine: future chapters will teach you how to play this one more efficiently, so you will have some extra challanges with cool rewards at your second playthrough. TBH I would consider this a good map with a bad rep.

I don't know why Green Unit Saizo map isn't a Conquest pick. As some one who follied with Conquest on hard until i downed to normal, I think judging the final chapter as too hard is odd, outside of FE that's the norm. I completely understand because babysitting Edgy Ninja man was not what i prepared for either, and I had to suspend my old-school no-reset on deaths mindset. Anyway (repeating Dani's point, don't judge quality with blind-hardest run etc). Lessons for all

I consider chapter 13 of Three Houses (reunion at Dawn) the worst map in all FE that I played (7, 8, fates Conquest, Three Houses and little of engage). If you do not know what characters you are obligated to use, it is unfair. Also, these characters may have the wrong class, items, battalions, etc.

It's interesting, because having only played 3H with primarily in-house runs (and training most if not all house members through White Clouds) I found RaD/HBD to be fairly easy and very enjoyable maps, but for anyone who did a lot more active cross-house recruiting they came out with a MUCH harder time in ch13 specifically.

@valiant72517 ай бұрын
Dani's argument for FE9 ch6 makes no sense, you can turn nearly any map into a boring slog if you're ready to just slog your way through for safety. Moreover FE9 always has an incentive to not turtle up because of bonus EXP and if you "always spend 6 turns" going to the edge of the forest you'll surely not make your way to the escape point in the 3 turns left after that to get max bonus EXP (even less get all your units to escape). Granted, precise knowledge about bonus EXP needs either prior information or repeated playthroughs but Dani mentioned her making a savestate I don't think prior knowledge is out of the question. I agree that the gimmick is weirdly implemented though, I feel replacing the forest by normal terrain and just having a line of trees at the end of the stealth area would make the gimmick less easier to approach and consider on repeated playthroughs (personally, in like 10 playthroughs, I used this gimmick to its full extent once then just thought "why would I waste so much time" and never did it again)

I maintain that the worst map in the series is hunting by daybreak. It breaks so many rules of how to not make an absolute dumpsterfire of a map that I'm genuinely concerned that nobody spoke up during the game's creation. So many small changes would make such a big improvement on this terrible map
@MythrilZenith11 ай бұрын

The worst maps in Radiant Dawn are 1-9 (cutscene map where you have to memorize the right sequence of moves) and 2-1 (total RNG garbage). 3-P and 2-3 aren't close to as bad. And fwiw, you can totally have an influence on the behavior of the green army in 3-P, though it's not something I'd expect anyone playing casually to pay attention to.

fe4 chapter 4 is total cheeks agree on that but i think chapter 2 is like, one of my favorite maps from that game and while i definitely understand it has annoying shit i do also think you two are being kinda unfair to it in places for a few reasons 1. FE4 is a game with autosaves every single turn. Even if you get your foolproof strategy screwed by Bordeaux's 14% chance to block a hit, you're only losing one turn of work to a reset. Getting the Bargain Band is also not so unreasonably tight that getting a single great shield proc will completely kill your ability to obtain it, but I digress. 2. The Cross Knights literally do not move until you recruit Lachesis. If you don't want them to run off and potentially lose you the Silver Lance, you can simply not recruit her until he is dead. (Doing this will also make actually defeating the initial squad of Heirhein knights easier since Sigurd is free to use his turn to kill something...) 3. Claiming you'd need a guide to know which house holds the Bargain Band is like, actually complete nonsense. The Bargain Band house is always the first one the bandits reach, and as such will always be the one closest to being destroyed. Trying to save the village that's only a couple turns away from dying is literally just common sense. 4. Deirdre needs to gain 4 points of HP to be able to survive 2 attacks from the Mackily ballistae. This may sound unreasonable, but...keep in mind that each use of the Silence Staff gives 100 EXP, you had two arenas to get Deirdre some experience in, she can potentially level from healing people, base Deirdre is set up to be able to Miracle tank Waltz's squad with a +80% avoid boost, and with the Magic Ring she can literally oneshot all of the cavaliers on the map. 5. IDK I just think the fact that there ARE all these interconnected conditions you have to fullfill to get everything makes the map...fun? I like how hectic the start of the map feels. I like the push and pull dynamic with wanting to get Lachesis close enough to get some heals in but far away enough that the paladin squad doesn't off themselves. Or sometimes I just say fuck it and let them go in and do my best to keep them alive. And on top of all this it's when the game starts to really open up with the resource allocation and such that defines the rest of the generation. (As opposed to being "Only Sigurd Can Kill Anything" like the first two maps...)

I have to say, The endgame of Fe4 has to be my pick for worst map. The actual map itself is fine - huge map with a lot of strong pre promotes with holy weapons. If it was just that, I'd say its just a tough map. But no, they just had to have a dozen dark mages with sleep staves that WILL (not may) incapacitate half of your army. if it was just that annoyance than maybe it'd just be unfun, but oh surprise! Arion and his crew ambush attack the main castle! The only units guarding my main castle were a handful of scrubs that got wiped out, so I had to waste time panic warping some stronger units back to ward them off. Just an absolute snooze (pun intended).

Fair point. I nearly softlocked myself on my first run of FE4 by leaving my home castle unguarded and saving over my chapter start save with an end of turn save. That being said, if you really want to fix it properly, just add a whole bunch of extra deployment positions that you can choose from that represent the various places to attack from all along the treeline.

Geoffrey's Charge is great. You have to turn off animations for sure, but that's usually a good idea anyway. It's fun to use units you don't need to worry about investing in because you can just do whatever. Go unga bunga and who cares about EXP (and max out your BEXP).

Pale Flower of Darkness Jerme Edition is way worse than either of those FE7 picks. Atrocious map
@MythrilZenith11 ай бұрын
I was VERY close to making it my FE7 choice, though I think it's bad in ways that aren't particularly interesting. It's a slow rout map with snow that makes it slower and an incentive to slow down even more in the form of Harken. It's annoying and non-threatening but in a way that's still frustrating. It's a bad map, to be sure, but ultimately it's skippable by going to the SLIGHTLY less painful version so I decided against putting it on my list.
@fums6311 ай бұрын
My mages died last iron man so it was not skippable 😭 Also it starts with 50 enemies and constantly reinforces, so if you’re too slow and kill less than ~20 enemies, the unit cap prevents Harken from spawning lol. Understandable to include the fog poison map though, that’s bottom 5 for sure

In my personal opinion, I think chapter 2 of fe4 should be in so bad I quit the game, solely due to the fact that it's literally true lol. There are so many people who try to play fe4 hearing how good it is and stop playing here. It's so bad that I think it's safe to say that more people quit the game playing this map then didn't. Literally everyone who hates fe4 points to this map. Most of the terrible maps in Fire Emblem are so close to the end of the game that you might as well preserve, but this being chapter 2 makes a really bad first impression for a lot of players.

I feel like FE4 Ch9/For Whose Sake deserves an honorary mention. It has the best and worst elements of genealogy together on one map. The theming and story integration is awesome, the three pronged attack on the castles was fun and Arion is one of my favorite bosses in the game. Meanwhile, recruiting Hannibal and Sharlow/Coirpre is annoying and uninteresting and it has the largest stretches of empty space with no enemies and, unlike the ch4 backtrack, you can’t easily circumvent it with well planned return and warp use.
