During week 5 of the 1982 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers played the Buffalo Bills at Milwaukee County Stadium. And to say that the field conditions were awful for this game would be an understatement, as afterwards, due to a variety of circumstances that led to the field being a giant mud pit, both Bills and Packers players and officials criticized Milwaukee officials for letting the field get this bad. This is the story behind the worst, sloppiest, and ugliest field in the history of the NFL

One things for certain; whenever a NFL video takes place in 1982, it’s guaranteed to be a banger! 👍 Whenever JG9 puts out a video in general, it is going to be pure gold! 🏅 In other words; seeing you do a video involving 1982, I knew right away that this is going to be an all-time favorite of mine. 😊 As you would say, of all the NFL games that have ever been played; this was certainly one of them.

For once, the title for "worst turf" was not the old Veterans Stadium in South Philadelphia. Despite the horrible Astroturf there, at least this game vindicates the use of artificial turf in multi-use facilities or having separate facilities for MLB and NFL teams. Besides, what you got that day was a REAL foot...I mean "MUD-BALL" game. 🏈

Due to a weird quirk in the strike-shortened 1982 season (as pointed out by Bob Costas at the start of the broadcast), three of the Packers four home games that season were played in Milwaukee. I suspect the reason the infield wasn't sodded after the Brewers' season ended was because wasn't cost efficient to sod the infield for the only game the Packers would play in Milwaukee after the resolution of the strike.

"Holy Flricking Schnitt." (To quote Kang from the Simpsons) I remember the joys of duel use stadiums. Watching your favorite running back make a cut at 3rd base, then he blows out his knee when he hits the outfield. Also Lynn Dickey & Joe Ferguson were both decent starters. They weren't epic Hall of Famers but they could play. Dickey might have been a bit better but Joe has him beat on longevity.

Finally got to see this game on KZbin! Game was blacked out in Milwaukee, the 5,000-6,000 worst seats were a hard sell after the strike. Packers had a similar mud pit for a Monday night game on Nov. 1, 1971. They did not sod the infield than neither. In fairness to Bart Starr, the grounds crew for the Ice Bowl didn’t have much time to prepare for the freezing conditions. But he had to believe, as I initially did, that the Milwaukee grounds crew had over a month to get the field in better shape to handle the rain.
@bemore1134
@bemore1134 Жыл бұрын
The grounds crew before the Ice Bowl WAS prepared in the sense that there were heating coils installed under the turf. The problem was, the coils heated the field but the tarp gathered moisture due to the heat. When the tarp was removed the moisture more or less "flash froze" over the field causing it to be like a rock.

In the AFL (the one in Australia, not the pre-NFL one), there have been multiple occasions where there have been straight up dangerous fields where multiple players have been injured and it's crazy that such a big sport can't ensure fields are totally safe Edit: the field reminds me of the Suns playing at Cazaly stadium where the ball would hit the ground and just stop. I knew the 1982 season was hella weird, but this is ridiculous. If the NFL hadn't gone on strike, I think the field would've been in much better shape even with the Brewers winning the American League title. That field made Gillette Stadium's field for the 2006 Jets/Patriots game and then-Heinz Field's surface for the Dolphins/Steelers MNF game the following season look like child's play. Many people complain about artificial turf fields (I support any trashing of Veterans Stadium's crappy AstroTurf surface), but I've seen plenty of games played on awful natural turf.

The game should be played in mud. Mud has characters. It also evens the talent. Some Racing horse are good mudders. The 1995 or 1996 Cowboys only lost one game to the Cardinals on a national grass field. The Cowboys had a large offense line with a 300# average weight for the linemen. Ironically the Super Bowl was being played at the Cardinal's stadium. The Steelers had a poor 1st half which sealed the game. The 2nd half was better, but the Steelers could have won with better coaching. I believe that the grass field was a factor.

That was one of the first games I ever saw the Packers play on TV when I was living in Ottawa. Only weeks earlier, at a local supermarket, I put a quarter in a vending machine which dispensed mini football helmets. I took a look at the helmet I received and had to ask my dad which team's helmet I got. I had never seen a yellow helmet with a cool looking 'G' and had to ask where Green Bay was located. It was the beginning, and a slow one at that, of becoming a die hard Packers fan. The TV series 'Step by Step' solidified love of the green and gold and to proudly wear a cheesehead. Side note: It was still easy to recognize Larry McCarren snapping the ball throughout the highlights.

Christmas '82 was the best one I ever had. Visited my DolFan grandparents in south Florida, my team beat the Bills in a big MNF game in Miami (after trailing 10-0), and I got (deep breath) Castle Grayskull, the AT-AT *and* a record of The Hobbit (the Ralph Bakshi movie) all at the same time 😁😁😁

As someone who supports a lower league English Football League (EFL) club fields like the one described here are unfortunately still commonplace in England from October-March outside of the Premier League & the 2nd division EFL Championship. I should point out that lower league English soccer is equivalent to AA or single A minor league baseball here in the US in terms of the quality of the facilities (though some are excellent) & the amount the players are paid. Many clubs at that level do not have the funds to hire & maintain a full time grounds crew to maintain the pitch. Clubs often only hire one or two people to do the job on a part time basis & they only work 1-2 days a week during the season. This often results in the field turning into an absolute mud bath in rainy conditions & large clumps of grass being ripped up. When the field is like this, many clubs (especially ones that are cutting costs) often leave the field as it is because they don't want to pay to have it fixed/replaced even though it greatly increases the risk of injury. The EFL & the English FA have had to step in on multiple occasions throughout the years and either provide clubs (especially the cash strapped ones) with additional funds to fix/replace their field or outright fine or in the case of one club back in the 1920's kick them out of the league because their field was so poor.

In high school we played a game in what we started calling the Mud Bowl during stretches and warm ups. It was late October of 1996 and it had poured down rain most of the night before, all morning and had continued until about 3:00 or so, highs in the 50’s, but by 7:00 when the game started, it was probably down to the high 40’s. And there was the Sophomore game at 4:00 on the same field so the field was already in bad shape. We were covered in mud after warm ups and stretches. The equipment manager found towels for guys to wipe themselves off when they weren’t playing. Despite never having played on such a bad field on the road before, we won. So yeah, kind of know what the Bills and Packers went through. Although, I will say that the field we played on was football only…

For my money, a game played in conditions like this is infinitely more interesting. Both teams have to deal with the field. I seldom watch the NFL anymore, but I would be much more inclined to watch a game under adverse conditions than something played under sterile, artificial, pampered circumstances.

the pic shown: i could see faint bits of the blue numbers (which look more like purple on my screen) but there was no way you could tell the color of the pants, and considering they weren't wearing white pants, that says a lot about how bad the field was. guess they couldn't take the cash hit and play the game in green bay instead (can't imagine the field up there would have been as bad as this field).

Also during the 1982 season, the Rams, like the Packers at Milwaukee County Stadium, didn’t sod their field after the Rams baseball tenants, the AL West champion California Angels lost the American League Championship Series to the Brewers. The Anaheim Stadium grounds crew left the field in its baseball state for the rest of the Rams home games for the 1982 regular season. However, this happened In California, where it is sunny most of the time.
