I shop at Publix and find it much better than Kroger, Ingles, or Food Lion. I think Harris Teeters used to sell bear meat; no wonder it's related to Kroger.

Publix and Fresh market are rightfully so at the top as their bakery is first class in taste from what I have purchased. Costco is 3rd as some baked goods are hit and miss. If I need bakery goods I try and go to stand alone bakery but when I can’t, I will go to a high end grocery store

Walmart bakery is awful. Just plain awful. I bake most things myself but sometimes I want something sweet without putting in the work. I will not buy anything from their bakery. So awful. Kroger. Awful.

News flash, Costco and Sams ALSO get most of their items premade frozen like Walmart. I know because I would QA at a place that sends the same muffins, cakes, brownies, cookies and breads to them all plus several grocery store chains.

I do contract work in the wine department of Costco, I also am rep for a manufacturing company that specializes in bakery. While yes, some cookie items, ie bite size brownies, Madelines, are purchased ready to use, all other bakery items are actually baked in house. Just look at the shelves under the baked goods, and you will see the actual products used in the bakery. They have one of the best pumpkin pies I've ever eaten, made , $5.99 for a 12" pie. You cannot even make one for that price. All other pies, Cakes, breads, and muffins are also made in house. And, those amazing croissants, because of the labor involved in making croissant dough, they purchase 2 oz croissant dough, proof then bake, from Vie de France whom I worked for, for 12 years. I do still feel as if it is the best croissant on the market and actually purchase them often. Overall, if I'm too lazy to bake and want to impress, I go to Costco for both quality and value.

Putting bakeries in the grocery store was a big mistake. When I was a kid you went to the bakery not the grocery store for baked goods. Or you made them at home. Quality has really suffered.

I bake from scratch at home. I'm particular about ingredients (some are horrifying!), so I know what's in my food. I also know it's clean.

Interesting... I was surprised to see that Safeway and especially Kroger were right down at the bottom of the list. Target was no surprise at all. They are the highest priced stores in my area and I've always known that when it comes to fresh quality food of any type, it's garbage. Most likely why many of their stores are closing across the country.

Save your money, bake at home and enjoy the best desserts and pastries you could ever find. You know what ingredients are in the product. You don't have to worry about all the additives. The next time you find yourself in a bakery, or grocery market, check the pastry packages for the added ingredients. Is that really what you want to eat?

It's no about having a bakery. Even the best here is ultra-processed food. All of it is poor for your health. Including the breads which will have choice of eight to ten chemicals (minimum) added to them.

Our local Trader Joe's is the only one in 100 miles and so the baked goods come from far away. They are relatively inexpensive and usually taste OK, but they are not in the slightest fresh.

The shoprite world class bakery and wegmans bakery are great where I am. I haven't had Costco since late 1990s. Wawa and quik check have good bakery too

Former eastern PA resident here now living in Florida. Loved the ShopRite bakery and today, I make it a point to purchase some of their Portuguese rolls when I visit my parents in NJ. Really great for sandwiches. Here in FL, Publix is also awesome though; their cakes never fall short.

@joe_losgar shoprite has good fresh prepared food like lasagna , stuffed shells, chicken franchise,. They have a good fresh olive selection. Good rolls and bread. Cannoli cream bucket, fancy pastries, cheese cake, carrot cake. I've heard people talk great about Publix on you tube.

Anyone else notice that sheet cakes are smaller? They used to put a lot more batter in the pans, they were MUCH higher years ago. Costco and Safeway cakes were much better years ago.

Hard to believe any place is worse than Safeway. In-house baked bread is absolutely tasteless. Cookies and cakes are about 90% sugar and very expensive.

Just remember, Costco's baked goods are nothing like Sam's. Costco's baked items are really tasty and worth the money, Sam's not so much. I shop at both stores and speak from experience.

3 years ago before I moved from New York to Virginia I would have scratched my head and said Publix Lidl Fresh Market Wegmans? What are those? Now living in Virginia I know what they all are and how much I love to shop at them. I actually live somewhere where I am not more than 5 minutes away from all of them. I adore Wegmans French cheesecake and baguettes. Lidl dinner rolls are outstanding and the fact that every year Publix gives me a birthday cake is beyond wonderful!

Food Lion's fresh baked goods are poor, and their fresh cooked chickens are among the worst.

All of the baked goods are frozen, thawed, and bagged. The cookies and some other things are thawed then baked. The fried chicken is all frozen and deep fried, and the rotisserie chickens are shipped from Tyson, the seasoned ones come that way and there's no real difference. Worked the deli for a while.

My son bought a cake I Publix here in central Florida more than have was all frosting very little cake. Threw away the frosting and was left with hardly any cake. You get burned once not twice.
