I remembered the 1985 Orange Bowl. It was hyped up only because the Washington Huskies were ranked No. 1 in the Pac 10 until they lost to a decent conference rival, the USC Trojans. Not too much shame in the loss despite the potential national championship implications from Washington's perspective. USC was jacked up for the game, and Washington did not properly respond. This Washington Huskies loss to USC finally opened the door wide open for BYU to finally claim the No. 1 spot during that season. Leading up to the Oklahoma vs UW game, college football fans used to enjoy these unusual bowl game scenarios. Of course, Oklahoma was semi-regular participant going to the Orange Bowl from the Big 8 if Nebraska didn't win the conference. It was usually either Nebraska or OU representing the 1/2 of the Orange Bowl. And the beauty of this nightcap New Year's The 1985 Orange Bowl is also remembered as one of the most hyped and controversial football games in college football history due to BYU being ranked number 1 in both major polls. The controversy of this bowl game was that Barry Switzer felt that the national championship should have been settled in the Orange Bowl because BYU was considered a non-power football program playing in what was described as a mid-major conference. The 1984 college football season sparked talks and controversy about how college football champions are determined today. It was also a strange college football game due to how the Orange Bowl often selected the at large team to play the Big 8 conference champion back then. It was the first time a team like the UW was invited to play in the Orange Bowl considering that they were located of course so far from Miami. A story that many may not remember was that Orange Bowl personnel were extremely concerned about the welfare of some of the Huskies the UW brought with them as mascots. The Miami humidity was an extreme concern in which many animal lovers were wary about the welfare of the animals. NBC often showed the huskies blasted by large cooling fans on the sidelines. The 1985 Orange Bowl was a great entertaining game. College football fans should watch at least the expanded highlights of this game. I loved watching Orange Bowl games back in the 1980's. Many blockbuster football games played during the decades prior to the modern college football championship structure. As for the 1985 Peanuts Halftime Show, it was one of the most unique halftime shows ever for TV viewers. I heard about the fireworks accident going into the stands and injuring fans a few days later. But from that show being televised on TV, it appeared to be a spectacular show! Fans must realize back in the day, the Orange Bowl Halftime show presented on New Year's night was a big deal! Even many non-football fans and families enjoyed watching the Orange Bowl half-time event every New Year's night before going to bed. People who grew up in the 1980's understood this. It was a bit of a New Year's tradition back in the day. Another example was that the Indianapolis 500 used to be sort of an American tradition to watch on a lot of TV households during the mid-1970's up to the mid-80's. Despite most Americans never having too much interest in Indy Car Racing period. Just weird traditions back in the day.
