I'd say the biggest mistake in your previous point was thinking that a rookie sorcerer who just started off coudld be more than "an average guy", and assuming that this would be just his limit until the end of the series. However, MC Early Powerscalling Jumping is still a common trope in fiction, especially anime, so I guess I can't blame you for believing Yuji would stay that way because he didn't start off strong off the bat..
