You've heard it a 1000 times. "Follow your passion" and/or "Do what you love!" Quite possibly the worst life advice anyone could hear, and then follow. Find out EXACTLY why Steve Jobs was wrong and why you should avoid the syrupy mantras.

Dear sensei MJ Demarco, that's not a coincidence. All billionaires want us to think that passion and hard work drive to success. Here in Peru I was really looking forward to read the interview of the richest person here: Carlos Rodriguez Pastor. The owner of Intercorp, a conglomerate of companies among those there's a bank: Interbank 🏦 All he said during the interview was that: "Follow your passion, you need to work hard everyday, save a lot." That's pure BS. He didn't talked about giving value to society, or looking for opportunities to solve problems of millions. We also know (thanks to you) that SMART work is way better than HARD work. Blindly hardworking people will just feel disappointed at the end.

Passion is a piece of the puzzle, it just doesn't fit where everyone else thinks it fits. Elon Musk was NEVER passionate about payment processing, the venture that got him started and rich. But now he can be passionate about rocketry and space because money is now secondary. Thanks for the note!

MJ DeMarco That's a very interesting insight. Constraints are really important. We gotta be consistent... If money is what we need our actions should be directed towards that goal (bearing in mind that needs are the key to obtain money) and wait a bit for passion.

I didn't "follow my passion" or in my case just my first real "interest" purely for what you said, if I tied it to money, it would end up making me despise it. "It's all about hard work" "do what you love" as if the world is just that simple and they actually believe that, Few people are willing to give true insight, just oversimplified buzz words

ХОРОШО I think people misinterpreted what Steve Jobs said the same way people misinterpret the bible quote, "Money is the root of all evil." The actual quote is "The love of money is the root of all evil." Likewise, Steve Jobs was telling graduates to "love what they do" because you can't be passionate about any career or business unless you actually cherish doing it, and in most cases a person is not going to get passionate about their career or business until they get some experience and success in it.

Typical case of how famous people like steve jobs get misquoted on the internet. Steve Jobs specifically said "love what you do" - not "do what you love". Seriously. Love what you do is extremely important. You can't make a decent living doing what you absolutely hate doing because you will never be good at it. The correct way to take Jobs' advice is out of all the things you can do that are profitable - find something that you really love doing and then do it.

What's the best advise for a 18yr old w nothing to offer? I read both your books and I have to say it was like a wind of fresh cool air that punched me in the mouth. In all honesty I have learned so much from you and so many others but am stuck in a rut not knowing what product or service can fit under the equilibrium of all the important prerequisites like next/cents + 4hr work week and 100$ startup. I was asking myself the same question when I was 18 (one year ago :D) and there is a simple answer: dont charge your work. work for free, but only work for people that are where you want to be (successful entrepreneur). best and easiest example? ask MJ if he needs someone to cut his videos in return for half an hour of 1 on 1 skype calls per week ^^

There's a part of every gurus advice that reflects their experience. Some who really enjoyed what they created /service they provided to the masses and didn't make as much money as they could of if they were more ruthless and pushed harder for profits. Some who made a lot of money and didn't enjoy the process may realise they have spent all their life creating millions of dollars but are not happy so they advise "Love what you do"

Side note: once I was walking through Walmart listening with my ear buds in..and as you mentioned the Lamborghini owner, inventor with the Iron Maiden t-shirt on..simultaneously I looked at another shopper sporting an Iron Maiden T shirt. Coincidence? I don't think so. A clear sign I'm on my way to riches. Anyway..I get more and more out of the book..each time I listen. Hi MJ, I really want to add one thing here . People are paralyzed by the "Resistance" power as described by Steven Pressfield and don't engage in a new adventure unless they are passionate about it. Now if this passion will bring value to the market place or not, that's what they will discover as soon as they will try to sell their first product. My point is that if they are not passion driven they will not bother to start. I think that the best advice is to start with your passion and then adjust according to the market place. I once heard this advice from an entrepreneur : "IN ORDER TO DO BUSINESS YOU HAVE TO BE IN BUSINESS" So, start with you passion and then adjust according to the market and to the feedback that you get from your customers and I'll quote Jim Rohn here "If you don't like how things are, change it! You're not a tree".

If I was to follow the market need then "love what you do" just tells me to try to fall in love with something I previously didn't even like doing. But it's just an interpretation.

And whilst It is true that you may not be able to achieve this through your work there are many other ways and means available. I have followed my passion (Sculpture) because nothing else was ever going to be acceptable to me. I did this with the full knowledge and acceptance of the possible price I would have to pay. The rewards are more than enough. I have lost count of the times people have said to me "I wish I had the balls to do something I love too". Some of these good souls are deeply unhappy with their choices and suffer from a sense of 'what if'. Not everybody wants the car and the house. Go into it with your eyes open- that is all, but; whatever you do DO NOT take the words of a dried up- soul empty, ersatz guru as the single truth. And finally remember this man is making money from telling you to give up your dreams and become a part of the machine. A charlatan with a bank balance is still a charlatan.

I was passionate about playing Guitar. I realized i wouldnt make money from it, and I didnt want to work labour. One day I started learning Networking - Routers and Switches. tech stuff I hated it- boooring. But oh shit... its kinda cool.. oh wow now after learning about it for 100 hours, I'm kinda good at this... Oh I just got a job making 30$/hour - entry level! Oh my god, I am so fucking passionate about Tech, and I LOVE it. I love problem solving, i love learning the new shit, i love dominating in my field. Here I am at 23 years old making $80,000$/year! I'm in university right now for something I think I'd kind of like to do (audio engineering - I'd like to mix and master music from home, as a freelancer) but the wages are generally low... I had good grades so I could've gone to law school or med school or something like that but I opted for more of a passion, instead. Any advice? I have many interests, the most lucrative of which likely being biochemistry and cybersecurity, so maybe I should study something else at uni or just drop out and study independently?
