The way I like to put it: I come to 40k for horrors beyond my mortal comprehension, not horrors entirely within my mortal comprehension.

I get it, but also I think it's worth noting that 40k has expanded it's scope to be many different things to many different people. Personally, I see 40k as a critique on fascism and how it draws out and idolises the worst aspects of humanity, covered with a propaganda veneer of "hoo ra humanity best!". I don't want to see all the horrible things the Imperium does on a day-to-day basis removed, but I think some aspects could be left at "implied" rather than explicit.

I literally can't find that lore anywhere, which either means it's from 1st and 2nd edition or its the Mandela effect. The red tithe in current lore they take slaves to become chapter serfs and some will become aspirants.

I agree that some of the lore is very uncomfortable and hard to read. However, Warhammer is primarily about war, which is very uncomfortable in reality. I see Warhammer as a deeply anti-war fictional universe, and removing these uncomfortable themes from the lore would diminish that aspect of it, in my opinion. A lot of the people who can afford to engage in this hobby are very removed from the reality of warfare and don't see that many of the themes in the lore are exaggerated, galaxy-scale versions of things that (unfortunately) occur in real life.

This is the thing. The Imperium isn't meant to be glorified. You're not meant to look at the Imperium and go "damn, what heroes!". The "heroic Imperial Guard" is in-universe propaganda to cover up the fact that the Imperium sees a human life as inherently worthless. It's meant to be uncomfortable because you're meant to look at it and go "damn, maybe these aren't the good guys after all...". If you want stories about "hoo ra humanity", there's plenty out there. 40k is humanity at it's WORST, and the Imperium itself is arguably the greatest threat to humanity of all!

I can't imagine the Charcharadons spending resources for around 10 years before getting a potential recruit when they're fleet-based. Specially when the Red Tithe scratches that itch instantly. So even without the unnecessary edginess of it, it's too dumb and impractical even for Space Marines, and those dudes are plenty of dumb and impractical.

yeah id say quite a lot of this lore is going on the corner of edgy-grimdark to just kinda vile stuff and edgy- to be edgy at least in this context. Now dont get me wrong I love the edgy grimdark nature because im a nerd and its fun to write my own stuff and play with overpriced toy soldiers, but theres a certain point where it isnt just a cool ass setting and becomes a kind of "why is this in here" kinda deal. Theres plenty of other ways to make a grim-dark universe cool of course but some of these ways that GW uses are just wild.

lol You know that the Emperor's Children get a rework. Because i estimated based on the lore that the Apothecary's can determine the compatibility of children with their gene seed prior to implantation. It is reasonable to breed parts of the Population that are more likely to produce offsprings that are capable of inheriting gene seed. My Iron Warriors Succesor chapter does it that way. In addition they do regularly Decimation to harvest the Gene Seed of the their own Battle Brothers under safe Conditions you don't lose Geneseed to Battle Damage and thus my Chapter is always at Full Strength with an Huge Amount of redundant Gene Seed storage.

If they'd started by going after things like that, cleaning out some of the pointless edge, then it wouldn't bother me. But they have been changing things that did not need to be changed. Now when any change is made I'm reluctant to give ground on it.

Honestly, I don't like the Red Tithe but I do wish the Grey Knights SoB blood thing was fleshed out more instead of being retconned. I think that's the proper balance here.
