I once tried drawing furries free art for them to try and open the possibility of making friends. They were all very friendly and buddy, but when the art was started or completed, I never heard from them after that. It kinda hurt. I have plenty of friends, but not a single furry friend 😔

It sounds like you led with an expectation, and made the relationship transactional. You drew for them (creative labor), and expected an effort at friendship in return (social labor.) If you want furry friends, just join furry spaces that match your interests and chill. Thrive and do your thing, show off that you don't cause problems and bring value, and people will naturally gravitate toward you. Look for people who can relate to you, or who you relate to, especially if they have similar levels of social and hobby proficiency as yourself. Structured activities like game nights are really good for initiating interaction, too, especially if people are socially awkward or inexperienced. I'm sure you know all this already, but I've found furries are some of the easiest people in the world to make friends with. If most of your existing friends are from spaces that force you together with others, like school or work (read: friendships of necessity), you might want to consider if you've really dialed in to developed skills to cultivate voluntary friendships that aren't necessarily convenient.

Thanks for taking your time to respond. While it wasn't my intention I think you're right I imagine. Can't lie and say I fully get it though. In my mind's eye, it was a kind gesture from the heart for people I thought I made a connection with. I met them volunteering at a con and in irl furry groups. We had great conversations and it seemed so mutual. Maybe the prospect of turning it down put them on the spot, or I fear maybe we were well met and nothing more. I don't know for sure, but I can personally attest I'd never accept a gift from someone I didn't want to be friends with. About getting furry friends, I'm glad it's been easy for you, but this has been so far from my experience. I'd say I've tried, but honestly I've given up out of frustration. I can't say I'm friends with anyone for any reason other than that we really care for each other and enjoy each other's company. My furry experience however, always devolves into getting free handouts, favors, and romance when all I want is someone I can be friends with AND express my furry side with without risk of being judged for it. I mean, I don't even fursuit anymore because I don't have anyone to do it with. I appreciate your advice though, I've been thinking about it and if I try again I'll try what you said. As a girl furry, I must say this: if you are a woman, please be careful when responding to dms from strangers. Some people will open completely normally but the second you respond they can get VERY weird. I’m not saying to NEVER respond, just be cautious if you do. I have completely stopped responding to most dms unless they make it very clear why they are dming me in their first messages, because of some very… strange messages I have received. If you want to be friends (or more) with ANYONE, being flirty or especially getting s**ual in dms without first getting consent is NOT the way to go.

I very rarely DM someone I don't know, and when I do it's for a reason. My business speak is usually like "Hi there, [insert name]. I've been looking at getting some stuff done for [insert thing]" or something vaguely similar depending on what I need/want to ask them. To people I'm good friends with, we'll just talk like the conversation never ended. Just right back to what we were talking about yesterday or someone just brings up another topic. Getting to that part when making friends with someone is always the rough part.

ususally if I'm sending a message to someone for the first time, more specifically on Discord, I usually send something along the lines of "Hey (test message)" in order to see if the recipient has DMs off or not, if the message sends, I then proceed to send a second message that contains the information of what I'd like to say, that way I don't write a long message just to get told by Discord "hey this person got dms off"

I get those on telegram sometimes. But I get them a LOT on Facebook. Those ones I look at the profile first to see what's up before responding. 98% of the time it's a scammer or bot. 2% ended up becoming friends that are either local or whatever but still an actual person.

I can relate a lot to this. I admit to being both on the initiating and receiving end to this type of messaging, and tbh, I still sometimes struggle with starting a DM conversation on a solid, good footing. Thank you so much for this video. I think it really helps me to better understand and become more aware of this to try and correct it. I'm sure it'll take time to fully correct, and I'll probably make the same mistake a few more times until I do manage to correct it.

I very much agree with these different points of advice when it comes to speaking to others via dms or any other form of social media, I too have ended up making some mistakes here and there. apologizing for being annoying as I've always been the type of person to be worried that I'm bugging another or possibly interrupting anything important. I've had quite a few people straight up tell me straight up that they don't talk to me unless I say something first which feels quite unfair, but I'm rather afraid sometimes to say otherwise as I don't want to feel mean despite standing up for myself. also just as something I relate to that has nothing to do with the topic of the video, 18:25 I too sleep in untill noon or later.. I for example often help people with technical problems in a discord and directly describing your problem makes the whole process MUCH easier, because you then don't have to 1. ask what their problem is 2. wait for their answer 3. actually check if you are the right person to answer it Directly asking cuts two whole steps out of the processes.

In terms of sending them, I’m a bit of a text windbag: I’m not going to send a “hi how are you” without also explaining what I want in the same message. Especially since I’m more likely to make first contact with someone through an FA note than through social media, so it makes sense to me to put everything on the table from the start. That said, I’ve certainly received “hi how are you” FA notes myself. Not often, and I just ignore those.

I'm the kind of cat that I'm not bothered by a simple 'hi'. I can look at their profile to kind of get an idea, albeit slight, of who they are and what's going on. Put the conversation in first gear and eventually get to sixth, if the conversation is needed to go that far. I would argue the profile could be used to fill in the blanks that you'd normally get with non-verbal messages in real life (and/or possibly VRChat). Maybe their last ten tweets show they're not having a good day, for instance. The hardest part for conversation that I've observed is dialing in what the other person wants to talk about. I've observed with many of my friends over the years that unless the conversation is to their benefit, it stalls. Can't have a regular conversation, but if I flip the right switch the conversation is at their full attention...Albeit with a subject that I might not be fully engaged in at the time (and I've had to remind them to use spoilers or other similar features). Or, more interestingly, how certain conversations roll incredibly well until a point where it goes great and it stalls permanently. Mostly because when people sleep they forget most of their conversations that happened previously (or rather, I keep track of everything too meticulously well). I don't know, it maybe because I've considered myself an outsider to furries for two decades that I've mostly figured it's not worth the energy given we're at the point that there's just not enough time to respond to everyone. While not related to social media, most people I know are not able to set their Discord status accordingly. So I'm constantly having to guess if I should send a message or wait a couple of months before trying again.

I mostly get these on discord and its basically always a bot. 3:26 so my response is basically just getting as much information as I can from the account in question and starting a conversation given the bot red flags arent immediately there. For example we only share one server in common when it really doesnt make any sense. Usually a VR Chat type of server and they arent even also in the main VR Chat server. But even then I start talking about the server we share. And they usually dont really respond to that because its a bot. 7:24 that's a good idea in general. I just like to get down to what we are talking about immediately.
