I had a friend who had a bit of a platform, and he hated it for that reason. I remember him trying to start a party like that but word got out somehow and he ended up mobbed by people demanding invites "or it's just a popufurs party". No amount of explaining that they just wanted a quiet weekend alone or "don't you do that with friends" worked. The answer from the guy who asked the last one was "No, my TRUE friends and I do EVERYTHING together", which is a Geek Social Fallacy of its own.

I don't care much about the "elite furry exclusivity bs", however I think the problem is that they call a private event a convention. I'm sure private cons exist, but I think the general understanding is that a convention is something anyone can attend as long as they pay for attendance. That might explain why people felt so upset. I dont excuse their behavior on twitter ofc, but changing the name to something other than with "con" at the end might be good damage control to decrease the amount of negative reactions.

Around here "fur meet" means it's open-invite, you can just turn up, or the most you need to do is RSVP by email or a website. Interesting how it varies by area.

I think having more, smaller events is great - you know, within reason. Big cons always feel so rushed and wild. More people means being spread too thinly among everyone you want to see... but if there's maybe a half dozen people I know then I can spend more time with them and we can all leave feeling a bit more... Connected? Less alone? The whole drama over private events thing is definitely not new though. There used to be a private New Years party in a castle somewhere in Germany - and the whole month of December and January there were meets which were just insufferable because of all the talk of "it's for popufurs only, they think they're better than us"... Which just spawned more private parties by our locals!

I have multiple friends who where at this con and it is so surreal to see how this friend meet up in the middle of nowhere in Germany blew up on Twitter and became the most hated thing ever for a short time :'D Also the term Elitefur is around for much longer but I mostly heard in German fur circles in like 2017. But much less used than popufur.

In Germany? Oh, this was probably an insurance thing. A mini-con I went to had to call it a “private party” and “invite only” because otherwise they’d have to buy super expensive event insurance. But… all you had to do to get on the invite list was ask the organisers. Also, they only had space for ~70 people, and there were enough friends-of-friends to fill the spaces without advertising to the wider fandom. It’s way cheaper and easier for everyone involved that way.

This is a really fair look at things. I have been on the receiving end where I was accused of being too big for a friend group in this fandom. How I was treated made me feel horrible. I know my friends accross the country are jealous I do things with my friends we share that love near me, but those friends know that my friendship with them isn't different because of that.

Playing devils advocate, I think a reason why some people are having this knee jerk reaction is because a big chunk of the community is made up of people who have been rejected from other events. So maybe that could explain why? Problem is that some people have trouble distinguishing if their reaction is based on fear or anger. I went to a more curated local day con that only hosted 300 people max, it was primarily for Florida furs and honestly it was an amazing time/vibe just having a small day con where everyone p much knew each other. I think a large part of the reason why something like this creates drama is because there's a number of people in this fandom are looking for an outlet to socialize in where they think they will find the acceptance they never got elsewhere. But then they get worked up over the belief that they need to have certain appeal to make friends and they are not going to be satisfied until they have achieved a certain level of popularity, and then it fuels anger when they see everyone else but them succeed that they start feeling offended to the point they give off the exact opposite impression they want to give and they end up turning into someone no one wants to be around at all as they are unable to take criticism or rejection. And while I can't tell people what to post online, social media a part of the problem. People spend more time online getting wishful about themselves as they look over the good time people are having yearning for the day when it's their turn to have the same amount of fun others are having, rather then finding other people to be friends with that they might actually have more in common with. And this raises another question, does the furry fandom have to be the only thing we revolve our lives around? I have one good friend that isn't a furry, does his friendship to me count for nothing because he's not in the fandom? Does it make me a failure to have a friend that isn't a furry? Maybe if we all stop acting like our happiness can only come from one thing, we wouldn't think that way or live our lives in envy of others who live so-called "better lives" that maybe shouldn't be that big of our business.

It seems like a logical progression as well. When you’re new to the furry scene, the panels *are* worth going to, there is a *ton* of neat stuff in the den you haven’t seen, and you haven’t met any community members. Late stage furry? None of those matter anymore. And the prefix for “Convention,” “Con” just meaning “to convene” Then yeah, its just a get-together. Its what I see a lot of furries do at cons nowadays. A room party or two, and going out to get meals with your friends that all live in different parts of the country, globe even. If all you want to do is see your friends again, share meals together, and throw parties with a close group of people, then a get-together is the *perfect* way to do that. The ire towards this elite fur thing is probably just newer-stage furries getting pissy because they don’t have those circles yet… They haven’t been around long enough to understand that the “con” isn’t the *convention* itself, really. The “con” is being in familiar and comfortable company. Its sharing experiences together, and that doesn’t require an uberexpensive convention venue, hotels, dealers den, nor VIP guests and panels.

I have never understood why people make a drama out of that and probably never will. Same with exclusive clubs like 54 or Berghain. If the bouncer rejects you, so be it! They won‘t get your money, and if they can live without it, so be it! It‘s not like that‘s the only place where you can have fun! Support the places where you are welcome and boycott the ones where you aren‘t. The market will do the rest. Of course it‘s always okay to criticise, but that should always be civilised and address the things you don‘t like and how you want them to be different. If they are successful enough without you, you aren‘t part of the target audience, and nobody can insist in being part of that anyway. If they aren‘t successful, they will either adapt, and in that case, constructive criticism can be a valuable source for them on how to improve. Or they will blindly follow their track and eventually disappear. In the end, you win in all cases.

Everyone here in the comments comparing this to seeing a message about a birthday party you weren’t invited to (because you’re a stranger) reminds me of when a load of people on Twitter complained about Kim Kardashian tweeting that she had her birthday party on a private island during the pandemic so that her and her friends and family could pretend the world was normal for a few hours, all after isolating for two weeks of course because people did not want to catch COVID at the time. The outrage and complaints about her being “tone deaf” were half correct, she was pretty flagrant in flaunting her rich lifestyle while loads of people couldn’t visit sick relatives or even hold funerals, but it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing in the sense that at least half of the people who could’ve done something similar did try, even if it wasn’t as extreme as going to a private island in the Pacific. The thing that drove the hateful commentary about Kim K’s birthday party was envy. People feel pain at the good fortune of others, and instead of complaining about how the world we live in excludes people from that sort of wealth and power, many lash out at the people who have played the game and won. Granted, it didn’t start out even, but you also can’t fault someone for the family they’re born into. What I think is happening is complaining from internet dwellers. Generally, it’s folks who are lonely, socialise mostly online, and probably have trauma about being and feeling excluded. Everyone who’s aware of what’s really happening, but complains anyway, especially in a way that can stir up other people, are just enviously lashing out. The idea that’s there’s a free “event” for an exclusive set of folks who know each other sounds like a networking event that many would love to go to, not just to feel included but to do networking with a popular group of people. The problem is that half of these events aren’t just extended friend groups getting to network a little better in person, they’re straight up just friends getting together for a weekend. It’s just referred to differently because that’s the lingo people use for furry meet-ups.

People were going to meets and comparing twitter follower counts, buying expensive fursuits to stand out... You're dead right, but I worry that you're in the minority. Shouldn't be that way really, I'm part of other communities where we're all just fans who enjoy a thing and that's fine. It seems really unhealthy by comparison.

It is unhealthy. A lot of people in communities like this take their fans/followers for granted which os what it seems hes doing in the video here. Without them you are nothing and or dont have a platform. Always be respectful to your followers, you wouldn't be where you are Without them​@philpem

I’m trying to find some reason to that drama. Maybe It was a little expensive event and a lot of furries couldn’t pass. That would explain why almost all these furries have extraordinary fursuits. Maybe it was a local event and most furries they knew each other, that’s cool if you want to be in a comfy and local event but it’s a bit sad is you’re a new local furry and you don’t have any friends. People didn’t hear of that meetup, and they got mad because they felt betrayed.
