A homeowner sent me this video of a metal roof job they paid to have completed. The metal roof was installed over shingles, I'd prefer the shingles be removed but either way this sort of job should not be acceptable by anyone installing metal roofs.

Sadly, they should teach home maintenance in school, along with home purchasing, its the most expensive thing you'll probably ever own. Research, research, research your contractor, word of mouth I've noticed works well.

Definitely could not agree more, but that’s why you get good agents and build up your contacts and knowledge for there, I prioritize so much the process of educating all my clients buyers and sellers alike, making sure they know why we are making the decisions we are and make sure they always know they can ask me for advice hopefully one day giving them the knowledge base to confidently make decisions in the future.

Without the theoretical science, you don't get the new material sciences, and without those, you don't get all these new materials that make home maintenance so much easier than it used to be. Abstraction is good, once you also know how to use your hands and apply the knowledge.

Here's a tip for homeowners: Do not use corrugated screw down metal panels for your residential building. If you want metal, go with 1" double lock, they're just about bomber-proof when installed correctly.

double lock is a real pain to install, but you are right about it being nearly impossible to mess up. the pain is using the hand seamers for it. even standing seam is easier with few to no problems. double lock just sucks if there is any damage to the roof. you can't get them unstuck without ruining the panels, which i why i prefer standing seam.

No metal roofs. I’m having one put on and we are fighting over the way it looks. You better have few angles and better yet, a ranch style home. If not, the odds that you’ll be happy are going down with every angle cut. I have a Frankenstein roof at this point….not happy. Hopefully I can get to a point where I can tolerate it.

My parents built their house in 1993 with a metal roof. At the time they built it, no one in the area was installing metal roofs so they put the screws on the high part of the ridge not knowing any better. Now 30 years later those screws actually will back out and water runs down because you can’t get the compression that you would if you screwed it against the flat part of the metal. Basically, after 35 years you will have to do a tear off because the fasteners have no plywood left to grab onto under them. She hast to do a tear off anyways due to leaking skylights, it’s a good thing I’ve grown up and know how to do roof so I can save her some money and do it the right way. I’m going to put down battens and radiant barrier this time as well sense energy Conservation is a big deal to her

Answer to your question: take them to Court for compensation so you can hire a business that knows how to fit metal roofing!

Nope in the valley, especially since they didn’t pre frame to have something to attach to without continuously screwing through the shingles, They should have installed a frame using 1x4 to attach the sheets to the 1x4 instead of directly through the shingles, also it is code to screw ether in the valley or the ridge it’s preferred to use the valley as you can compress the panel as well using the ridge as there’s a gap you’d have to shoot 3 inch screw which would show, the washer that compresses against the sheet is the water barrier so it’s completely fine to screw in the Valey and the rib, absolutely nonsense that it’s an issue been doing this for 10 years there’s nothing wrong with it if you know how to install the sheeting correctly and where and where not to screw, also pin holes are inevitable if that’s an issue don’t confirm the job and don’t hire out, you want something done right do it yourself if not you’ll pay for what you get, fast and good ain’t cheap, and cheap and fast ain’t gonna be good, everyone says hire a professional well being a professional most of these clients are a pain to deal with so just save your business for clients that actually know the cost of materials and labor, if you take the 1000 bid over the 8000 bid obviously your asking for a Joe blow contractor, personally I charge by the job and what I know a fair and accurate quote not my problem if you don’t accept, NICE WORK ISNT CHEAP VERY SIMPLE

@@RpR_Renovations I like them in the peak here. less chance of leaking in my opinion, but that may be a regional thing and whats more interesting is the installation instructions vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and one I looked at even said either was fine. My preference is peak. Rooftop temperatures can vary from 50 degrees C here to -30 deg C. Maybe that plays a factor. those ribs act as anti syphon where the sheets overlap. I've seen so much done incorrectly the placement of the screw really is often the least of the issues, just my preference. I'm not a pro, just built a few houses, garages and sheds. I've used it as siding and in that application I did it in the valley rather than peak.
