Actually love my Honeytone. It takes fairly well to pedals (harmonic response with a tubescreamer is absolutely fantastic), the onboard overdrive is halfway decent, and like you said, it gets surprisingly loud.

I use two danelectro with a boss mt 50 camping ect great fun. You can get a decent sound through the boss but on thier own yip they do suck😎

These if you disconnect the internal speaker and connect a good 8 ohm speaker it puts out great sound! Plus great volume for clean or dirty.

I am a big fan of home made cigar box guitar. I love the sound you get when you plug one of these into Danelectro mini amp. Turn it up. You get a mean, nasty, gritty gut bucket sound! If you are looking for ugly, ugly, ugly, primitive street corner cigar box blues sound this is it! The best. If you are looking for anything else then forget it. Lo fi fiends rejoice.

I use a micro marshall on my Dean Electric resonator...Used it at the Rainbow in Hollywood and used it at Tootsies in Nashville.Stick a mic in front of it and it rocks...Used one for years.

I wanted to add one thing to my comment below. I have found the Danelectro mini amp when used with cigar box guitars, combined with Ammoon Pockrock Portable Guitar Effects box to be phenomenal. When all combined it delivers a loud as hell, sleezy, rip yo throat out sound. Try it out Lo Fi fiends.

Yes. I tried the Fender Mini Twin here in Japan (among others), and it sounds like empty beer cans rolling downstairs. I have a few VOX mini's because I travel a lot, and I settled for the VOX AC2Rhyhm, that I believe just hit the US. I got it here in Japan and it is excellent.

Ever seen a Laney lionheart mini? It's a 2 by 3" 6 watt with two channels, drive, volume, master, and built in delay. Also a tone bridge phone connector and app to turn a smart phone into a virtual effect pedal. About $130 Yankee dollars. and it runs on batteries. I run mine off the end of a one spot daisy chain with a mini disnortion fuzz and the good ol guyatone mini chorus while playing a Strobel rambler. The entire rig could fit in carry on and it sounds incredible. I've had the the boss and the Laney at the same time and while the boss mini is good with decent distortion and tone control, the Laney just sounds more like a tube amp to me. Richer. Wider.

I'm hearing good things about the 'Spamp.' A guy in England is making mini amps from recycled Spam canisters. He's using JFET's, and the things are supposedly LOUD. Don't know if they count because it's definitely not a 'big boy' manufacturer, but they're out there.

Totally agree with the Fender Mini Twin because I got one. I’ve been waiting for a good mini amp that is portable and has that Bose affect where a small box can sound pretty great. Seems like the Boss and FLY fit that category.

I have owned a couple of Honeytone amps. I own one now. There are some that have SOLD on eBay for $47. (wow) But if you catch Musicians Friend during a sale you can get them for $15, which is about what they are worth. I gave a Honeytone to a neighbor when I gave him a Lyon pseudo-Strat to learn how to play on. Honeytone can actually be Loud if you crank-up the Gain. But those have never been more than a Toy. And a practice tool. Or just something to annoy the cat.

Yes, the Fender Mini can sound pretty bad, but not always. Turn tone and gain down, add a reverb ped, and you get a pretty good clean sond. If you wanna go dirty, be very carefull with the gain,not much is ness. But best,put a drive pedal,and you get big tone with great feedback, just keep tone down,and gain under strict control.

I heard about the ms2 having some issues, i still really wanted one though I I checked the reviews on Amazon there were several sellers. Some sellers got great reviews and others got extremely bad reviews I bought mine from solo music gear and I've had no issues so far. But don't expect it to sound like a million bucks. I truely believe the quality depends on were you buy them from

I don’t dislike the honey tone that much obviously it isn’t the best but I like it just because they are portable and they do have that classic sound I like. My favorite part that i can clip on my belt and I can go to a park or place just to play and if I don’t to disturb I can just plug in headphones.

I think that you need to keep in mind what they are for. When you compare the Honeytone to the Blackstar, they are totally different concepts. The Marshall MS2 would be a better comparison because they both have belt clips and run on 9v batteries. They can be taken anywhere because they are light weight. I just bought a Honeytone and it doesn't sound that bad clipped to your belt playing your favorite tunes in the middle of the forest or something. I know the Katana and the Blackstar sound much better, but they take a bunch of batteries, weigh more, don't have a belt clip, and won't fit in your bag. For what it is, the Honeytone sounds vintage and good. I also have a first edition Orange Crush Micro and the HoneyTone does not sound that good in comparison, but the Orange is heavy, bulky, and has guitar strap buttons. If you want a sucky mini amp, I have a Smokey and that takes the cake for terrible sound.

I modified a cheap no-name 9-volt guitar amp years ago with fantastic results. I removed the circuit board from the amps housing, jumped 2-resistors before the tone control and over volted the amps final power transistor by feeding it directly from the battery. I then mounted the naked board on top of a Sony 3.5" enclosed speaker from an old surround sound system. The result was this super charged distortion with a crazy harmonic feedback sustain that made me sound like a guitar wizard. I was able to get about 30 minutes of use out of it before the pa transistor self destructed. I wish I would've took pics of the board and noted the transistor number before I destroyed it.

I agree. My first practice amp as a newbie was the Marshall stack mini. It was awful. Blackstar Fly 3 blows them all out of the water. Great little amp with great big sound and very reasonable price. Takes pedals too.

for me personally it would be a distant 4th in my top 3 list. I find it a little fizzy for my tastes and it doesn't have the same kind of low end as any of the top 3 I picked. but thats just me 😁🎸

Oh c'mon! Marshall sounds great with dying battery full cranked and covered with cussion. I'm not kidding. That was my usual setting as a kid trying not to upset parents at night. Very fuzzy & vintage-ish ;)

I a Honey by Dano and it has a leather handle! I was using it for a test amp on my work bench but it makes so much noise on it's own that I just have it sitting on the bench. I knock it off on to the floor and it still works. I have to keep it because it was a gift. I thought that if someone thinks of me enough to buy me something I will keep it. This stupid amp was new and my friend didn't know how bad it sucks. It won't break and I am stuck with it.

See above comment. ;) The Honeytone's problem is that it has an utterly horrible speaker - the amplification circuit itself isn't bad and is actually pretty good; played through a 25-watt 2.1 system it sounds markedly better.

It's not so much about quality control as just knowing how to use them. When I first got my Honeytone, I thought it was awful. As I got more knowledgeable about tone and how to dial in different tones properly on it, it got a lot more versatile for me. Also helps a lot to use a good OD or distortion pedal with it. There is also video with Dimebag Darrell killing it on the Marshall mini stack; dive bombs and everything. Ultimately, these little amps are just speakers; it's all about how you use them.

The problem with ALL mini amps are the same.... Not tone, not loudness, but speaker size. You ain't going to get a full amp sound out of 3" speakers. The Fly 3 with ext. cab gets close, but I always detested the thin sound that these micro amps have. They all sound like a small transitor radio. I know that the portability factor is why you can't compare to even a small practice amp. Also, if it had delay or reverb like the Fly it makes a BIG difference.

I bought the Blackstar Misfits mini, it's really cool, and also got the Blackstar V3 10 watt small amp, and OMG it's phenomenal!! I like both but esp. the latter. I got the latter specifically for the crunch channels, you can just dial in The Smithereens or whatever fast, I love it.

I had a HoneyTone for a few years - not only was it useless for tone, but it developed a rattle. It certainly was loud. Wound up giving that away to Value Village. I needed a small amp for a 12th Doctor cosplay last year, so I tried out a number of mini amps. After going through the Fenders, I discovered the Mini Deluxe was the least objectionable, and actually had some decent gain. With that one, I discovered one trick with that is to turn the tone knob all the way to the right, it removes the fartiness. It can also pull off a decent clean if the gain is down. I now use it at home mostly to practice, and also to use when re-wiring a guitar to monitor the results

I think they all kinda suck now. The only small practice amps I like that I own are the Roland Micro Cube, and the Vox G2 mini. Otherwise, most tiny amps just have no power to 'em and that's a major problem for me playing blues and rock.

They are toys yes... but how else you gonna get anything else in an airport bag to take when your working away from home? That's my need... I have my guitar from UK working in Saudi Arabia... I need a little amp to pack in my bag...bought a 10 watt...its fine. My 100 watt orange amp at home is incredible..but its at home where I can't play it.

I did some research and it seems as though piezoelectric speakers are mainly used for beeping sounds- like for error messages and that sort of thing I guess. I have the Vox Mini G2, now THAT'S a good practice portable amp! Totally good and usable. I'm also told the Roland Mini Cube is THE mini amp to buy, it's absolutely as good as promised, and can pump out some real volume, but it sounds quality. The really tiny minis are toys, no doubt about it. I even bought the Katana Mini and I'm already ready to give it away. Not great.

Haha, of course they sound weird and can't be compared to even cheap full size amps because they aren't normal amps. Main purpose to use them is alternative to playing on unplugged guitar when you can't use your gig (deep night and your neighbors has sensitive ears as Mr.Spock, you're simply traveling, etc) but don't like to play in headphones. They are very small, sound somehow (you can recognize notes while playing), they're cheap (but could be more cheaper if manufacturers would remove this shitty drive and tone knobs!!), don't require external power and can fit to any bag or backpack. Personally I would prefer 9v amps, because I always have few 9v batteries for pedals. That's all.

The Vox Mini Amps are really good. I would recommend any of those. Even the Pathfinder 15 or 10, while not having massive power, sound damned good, are reliable, and they look fantastic. Excellent bedroom amps. I also used to extract a nice fuzztone out of the Pathfinder with my Epiphone LP 100, with the gain up to a certain level (maybe at 3 pm), it was really neat.

So true! I have all three and agree on all points. The Honeytone is so bad it's the only one I have away. I would also add the Orange Crush Micro. The headphone output on that one is so so and maybe a redeeming feature. By size, weight and cost it matches the Fly...but a crappy sounding toy in comparison.

I like the honey tone strictly for the belt clip, I don’t want to carry the amp around w me, if it has to be stationary I’m warming up the tubes in my ac-30

It's all about the artist and the speaker. The first amplifiers had crummy tone. The sears silver tone had this horrible solid state sounding clean tone that people actually worked with. Try dropping a better speaker on a crummy amp. If you can't make a cheap acoustic sound like a daydream. You can't make high end equipment sound like an actual nightmare.

Dunno much about mini amps, but if it counts, my Yamaha 25 watt (?) amp that I got for 2 bucks at a yard/estate sale. The pots are crusty and it is missing a foot, but it works fine otherwise. I use it as a keyboard amp.
