CNN has reported on a lot of things since 1980. But when it comes to their college football coverage, they've sometimes got stuff very wrong. And there was no more infamous example of that than what happened in 1985, when they reported that West Virginia would be playing in the Aloha Bowl... only for that to be a complete lie and fake story. This is the story behind, quite easily, the worst moment in CNN history when it comes to their coverage of college football

Cheap, nonstory by a "news reporter" desperate for something to post on his not very good site. This guy is his own editor which is the only way it made it on are. Any responsible news editor would have spiked it and told him to go out and find a real story and be thankful he wasn't fired. "Go cover some middle school games and be thankful you're still working" is what this former editor would have told him.

As someone who wrote news and sports for UPI during that decade, I would have been steamed at CNN or anyone who read my copy on air as saying something it clearly did not say, then _refused to accept responsibility for their error._ CNN, anyone can make a mistake, but you are obligated to acknowledge it was your error and apologize for it. Too many high power people want to blame some one else, or "back pedal" on what they previously said instead of being professional.

Big mistake by CNN. Then again, the Aloha Bowl got lucky when USC won its regular season finale to become bowl-eligible. The bowl somehow extended an invitation to USC before it had to beat Oregon, which was in the same situation as USC, in Tokyo to even qualify for a bid.

No such thing as "bowl-eligible" in 1985. USC had accepted the invite, and if they had lost to Oregon, the Aloha Bowl would have been stuck with the embarrassment of having a 5-6 team in their game.

Most college football sports' fans know there is no Aloha Bowl and it discontinued over 20 years ago. Most college football fans also know that a team needs 6 wins to be eligible for a bowl invitation. There is a rare exception that permits a team with only 5 wins to be invited if there are not enough 6-win eligible teams available to fill a spot. However, there are strict academic performance requirements that must be met for the 5-win team, such as Rice U did this year. Given its disappointing 5-7 record for the 2022 season, no WVU Mountaineers' fan in WV, or anywhere else in the country, would believe this story whether it was on CNN or any of the local TV stations in Charleston, Huntington, Wheeling or Clarksburg, WV.
