The closest we even got to a ‘filler’, were episodes like ‘Appa’s lost days’, or, ‘The Tales of Ba Sing Se’, and those episodes are unforgettable.

Avatar the series is probably one of the best planned series ever made. They knew exactly how many episodes and seasons that this was meant to be. All that was set in the writing.

@@quatreraberbawinner2628 Didn't Ehasz the main cowriter for the series say recently on Twitter that it was basically a choice between the movie(s) or another book? And I think Nickelodeon helmed the decision for the movies because they had a contract with Paramount for a trilogy and they were going book by book per movie, so a fourth one would not be ideal for that formula- this is obviously before they even pre-produced the film, and the creators were originally VERY on board with doing the movies and obviously always have been because they were also on board with the live action Netflix series until they backed out due to creative differences. Part of this is rumored, I'll admit, I saw an insider source that mentioned this but have since been long deleted and there was no undeniable proof it was legit, but I do remember the cowriter basically saying that they had 4 books planned for the series but by book 2 they had to scrap it, but then you have the creators from years before saying it was always 3 books. It's a miracle the series ended on a high note and was so well structured because there were apparently a bunch of conflicting views on how to handle the series, but I guess that attests to how passionate everyone was about making a good project. No matter the differences, they managed to compromise a well structured and stunning show.

"Nothing could ever tarnish the legacy of Avatar!" Korra: "I'm the Avatar! You better believe it!"... wait, no, that's not right... "You gotta deal with it!" That's the one. I have a vague, hazy memory of M. Night saying somewhere that he cut out the spirit world bits because he was trying to ground the movie in more... realism... but he left in the bending...?

Id also like to point out that the original Avatar on Nickelodeon actively disproves the current trend Hollywood is trying to gaslight you on. It was almost entirely comprised of men and women of color or other minority backgrounds and cultures. No one gave it grief, called it woke, or refused to tune in. Because we all knew quality when we saw it and it wasnt racially charged outrage or beratement for clicks and views. You could not make Avatar today with out it having copious amounts of "The Message!" in it.

Loved hearing you gush about the original series. Such an incredible show. But ALSOOO I will defend about half of M. Night's filmography to the death 🤣Signs and Unbreakable are fantastic and underrated, The Village is really well executed aside from the contrived twist, Lady in the Water certainly isn't great but I think there's aspects to it that are really unique and interesting, which is more than I can say for most big budget theatrical releases in the last five years. Split is an awesome thriller with a killer James McAvoy performance. But yeahhhh........The Last Airbender is probably the biggest pile of shit I've ever seen.

Anyone who can articulate the greatness of the Avatar cartoon series by eloquently citing the plot, characters and themes instantly wins my respect and attention. You... kind of already had it anyway, after I watched your videos on Rings of Power, The Witcher and Velma, but now it is etched in stone! The impression I got from an interview with Shamalam and his two collaborators was that they hadn't seen the show before they decided to make a movie of it, and Shamalam was kind of using the tv series like cliff notes while he was writing the script. And the further he got into the process the more he felt like the task he'd taken on was way too big for him... but he carried on with it anyway.

We went to see this in the theater when my kids were young teens. Both of them and their friends walked out about halfway through. Shyamalan is another example of a director that gets stuck into a box with his directing. Some directors and writers find an innovative way to use the well worn toolset(s) of their profession and some even manage to be inventive and find a new path with the same old toolset(s). Unfortunately, some get quite a bit of success the first time out using this new toolset and then begin applying it to all of their projects whether it makes sense for the story or not. The story becomes cookie cutter to fit into the toolset, rather than finding the right one for that kind of story. The other issue is that if you use the same toolset (blatantly) on every film/television show to the point the audience knows that is your thing, you lose intrigue because they already know what to expect. Directors tend to get saddled with certain elements in their films/television shows that they are responsible for saddling themselves with. This is not always a bad thing. Elements, style, components can be a calling card, but if the format of your story follows the same path every single time you will lose your audience because their involvement and interest have been traded for expectation. In Avatar I think he branched out of his comfort zone, but unfortunately it was with someone else's original story, a rarity in his directorial work. With no mysteries or dramatic turns he was truly out of his element after reviewing his work after The Sixth Sense. While I think it is great that he was branching out and trying a new style, it probably not a great idea to start with someone else's well known story. Though I can see why he might have thought so at the time. Perhaps if he had found the right story that could be bent to his style it may have worked. He has other style idiosyncrasies beyond the dramatic turn of events or everything not being as the viewer thinks it is. He is very strict on running time. Why arbitrarily set a time for your story to be told and then cut it down to meet that runtime? I could see it if your movie is 4 hours long then some cutting or splitting is in order, but that is not his issue with running time. I took the 9 movies from The Sixth Sense in 1999 coming in at 107 minutes to The Visit in 2015 coming in at 94 minutes (including these 2 in that 9) his average run time is 102.5 minutes. Airbender has the longest run time at 109 minutes and The Happening the shortest at 90 minutes. When you look at them a bit more closely you might see a pattern: The Village (108 minutes), Lady in the Water (103 minutes), Unbreakable (106 minutes), Signs (106 minutes), and After Earth (100 minutes). Perhaps he could tell the story of the Airbender in less than 2 hours, but it is unlikely to be able to do it justice in this time. It is more likely he had a fuller story and then due to habit or whatever reason he likes his movies under 110 minutes he chopped it down to what we got. Whether it is good news or not he finally broke the less than 110 minutes in 2016 with Split coming in at 117 minutes. He then dared to go to 129 minutes in 2021 with Old and an astonishing (for him) 139 minutes for his upcoming 2023 Knock at the Cabin. Perhaps he has learned to tell the story and not to bend the story to his arbitrary time constraints or not, he already lost my interest due to his other habit of using the same toolset he hit big with on The Sixth Sense over and over and over......

I've seen ever episode of AtLA, enjoyed most of them, and knew the second I saw images from the filming that this would be a train wreck. But my sister had this delusion that I shouldn't judge something without having seen it... I'd be more inclined to have seen her point if literally everyone either of us have ever spoken to about this movie hadn't said it was worse than taking a hockey puck to the crotch at 100 mph! By the time the movie was over I was just glaring at her until she said "You were right, this was a waste of time."

Netflix is filming this again now? And Paramount is going to release Avatar and SpongeBob movies in 2025? These are the headlines that came up when I googled the TV show, which is sadly not available on KZbin. I only heard about this movie from "pitch meetings" (a KZbin channel you should definitely watch) and I felt really bad for the fans of the show, which I have never seen but it sounds like I missed out! That comment section was written by your 1,667,889 soulmates-in-anguish. This very educational channel also informed me about other awesome-kid/teen source-material-to-worst-movie-evers of which I was completely unaware namely Percy Jackson, Artemis Dark, and Eragon. I was very surprised that filmmakers would recognize that a book series or cartoon is successful, and then not utilize the actual story. Is it ego? Is it deliberate destruction? Is it laziness? Whyyyyyy??? And then 2016 rolled around, and deliberate destruction + ego seems to be the answer - at least for Lady Ghostbusters and all the mutilated franchises that followed, ending (currently) with She-Hulk and Rings of Power. Anyway, thanks for the video!

2:57 I won't say better but certainly on par: Babylon 5 Londo and G'Kar, Cowboy Bebop Faye, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Anne (yes that tiny cross show character), Westley, Faith, Darla and Spike. I'd argue the problems in The Twelve Kingdoms but I can argue Avatar issues but there are three girls who drastically change in that story in ways that still hit me like a truck and it's the combination that made it work the most just expect to suffer for 5-6 episodes first. I could name more to be honest but that's probably because I love the deeper works as it's how I like to write. And no hate on Avatar, I just agree no work is without sin, certainly not my own. But I LOVE Avatar so I digress and YES a Horrible adaptation. And yes I tragically saw this first and avoided the series for Years over it. Fun video.

One of the actually great things about the movie is the music. Cause they got an actually good composer for it, James Newton Howard himself. Granted, James did music for a lot of shit films. But the music in them was always a fucking amazing. Too bad that not only is this movie horrid, but the editors also are. So even if the music is good, they don't know how to edit it in properly in any scene that should have corresponding music.

I absolutely agree ATLA is ONE of the best shows ever... Tho there are a couple of challengers. Death Note comes to mind, there are a handful of others. But if I had to pick a single one as the best, I-honestly cant think of a sinlge flaw in Arcane. Its really hard to compare shows cross-genre but with every other show... there has been flaws, few and far between, some times rather small ones but they have been there. There is no such thing as perfection, so Im still looking for them in Arcane... I just cant seem to find them.

True confession from me. I have zero interest in anything live action Avatar The Last Airbender. It already makes me think of Dragonball Evolution. The anime is perfect and needs no live action adaptation.

Honestly gotta disagree on the tatoos. Because this is live action (Which inherantly means you kinda have to add more detail/realism into things) they can't just make the tatoos big blue arrows. Like imagine these culturaly singificant things that most airbenders might never truly aquire and it looks like good cosplay. Like of course they would be intricate and detailed.

The Avatar the last air bender was top 3 greatest animations ever made period. Now the live action film was the worst thing I have ever watched, a true abomination. It was so bad I had to stop watching and never tried finishing it. Mind you I love watching movies and will finish any movie even bad movies just to say I watched it. This movie was so terrible it broke my spirit.

I remember being really upset at that time because I couldn't go see the movie.. now I'm just grateful for never having my childhood series ruined by this piece of crap. I actually watched another review video where they spoke about the director having arguments with some of the people who worked on the movie and they left because they hated how awful and disrespectful this movie was being made. I think this movie was meant to prepare us for what garbage we are getting from Hollywood nowadays...

indian micheal jackson got the pronunciations wrong the casting wrong and the magic wrong and the scenes wrong and he had the best story board in a completed animated series where everything is pronounced and shown.
