Molly Burke ughhhhh so sorry! The stairwell going up to my apartment is difficult to maneuver large furniture. Most normal cheap moving companies dont box up your stuff, and personal belongings, unless you pay for an expensive high-end service. Most cheap moving companies expect everything to be boxed up and ready to go. If you want a moving company to bubblewrap your glassware and all that stuff, you have to pay for it and it takes a lot longer. Personally I wouldnt trust them to go through drawers of my personal belongings particularly if you have jewellery and expensive stuff because it will go missing. It sounds like Molly paid for a budget service and expected the royal movers.
@PonderingStudent
@PonderingStudent 4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't sound like she paid for a budget service. Plenty of companies will cover packing and unpacking your things if you pay a premium. Molly states that they'd always packed the boxes themselves for previous moves, but decided to pay extra to have it professionally done this time. The company were specifically told that they were expectied to bring packing materials, pack everything and then move. They (presumably) quoted a price accordingly. Did you watch the whole video? Because she also says they did move valuable things like jewellery and handbags themselves.

Also, you don't lay out a blanket, throw clothes on it and pick it up and throw it in the truck. If you don't have boxes, tape, and paper, you go back to the ware house and you get the materials you need and go back to the job." Molly, I'm sorry you had to go though this.

either go back, or do what we did and call the office and have them bring some supplies out while we worked on the move job (blanketing furniture, prepping the house, etc). If my office failed to get what the customer wanted, they worked hard to get the supplies out there and usually spent extra manpower to fix the mistake (at no charge to the customer).

I tottally agree with you about filing a law suit. I am an owner of a white glove moving company and suing a Moving company is the most complicated process. Most states require that companies only pay .60 cents a pound per item damaged. So for example if you have a $1200.00 TV that weighs 5 pounds. The company is legally only liable to pay $3 dollars for that TV. ( .60 x 5 = 3). Another trick is that they can claim the item was not brand new and they can price that $1200 TV at $400 because they had it for a year. As being in the industry and have my own company this is horrible business practice. I dont believe in it and will never conform to it. When picking a moving company. If they throw the whole. " College kids " and athletic kids out there. Run ! You want real professionals who know how to treat your belongings. Younger men that are doing this for a summer job have no care about your stuff . I always reccomend seeking smaller companies out first but not the cheapest. Moving is tricky. Never go with the cheapest movers ever. Smaller companies that charge in the middle usually are going to take care of your items. The way to figure that out is call Two men and a truck, get their quote with there ridiculous fees and then call the cheapest u can find. Somewhere in the middle is best.

I went through a very similar experience this past week when my family moved to our new house. Here's some highlights: -One of the movers told my dad I was a bitch and needed to "be disciplined more" (I am 22 years old and was within hearing distance) -They refused to listen to anything my mom and I said because we were the "women of the house" and this was a "man's job" -They screamed swear words every few minutes and continued even though I politely asked them to stop while I was on a work conference call 🤦(my boss heard them and just started laughing at how ridiculous it was) -They packed and moved EMPTY boxes to waste time and look like they were being productive!!! Seriously the worst experience I've ever been through 🤦🙃 so glad it's over now

@@NotMykl Exactly. They had packing boxes and that part of the move, so they could have still done that and gotten paid. Where I lived before, packing costed more than the truck move. Two crews could have done it. It was really unethical not to mention it. Edit: Honestly, I think why it bothers me so much is that I used to work for Bank of America. (Think what Wells Fargo got caught for x10). I essentially, (actually... not even essentially, it was named, ) I got fired for finally refusing to take advantage of people. Luckily though the 3 out of 5 times we've moved it was in the same town so it was easy taking small trips because we got small cars. Though I still don't know how they got our couch and walked it across a small street, up stairs that were 15 feet high that were not attached to the house (it was still in the process of being raised) lol

When I move to where I am now they didn't bring a big enough truck so they smashed everything in scraped and scratched a bunch of the wooden furniture and a couple of the items for broken and once the moving truck arrived they had smashed everything and so hard that we couldn't open the wooden panels to get our stuff out

Booked a uhaul so that we could move my mom out of an apartment. Arrived at 9am to pick up a 15ft truck and there was no one there. After a half hour of phone calls and driving to the next nearest depot we were sent back to the original depot. The gentleman was over an hour and a half late and didn't have the truck we had pre ordered a month before. All he had was a moving van, which we took because it was better than nothing. Also it was raining super hard. Such a terrible experience. 2 years later we moved and figured we would give uhaul another try and darn near the same thing happened. Except they called 2 days before the move to tell us they didn't have the moving truck. So infuriating.
@cetkat
@cetkat 4 жыл бұрын
It's pretty standard for them to not have the truck. They rely on people getting it back to them on time, which apparently many don't do. But normally they just check around for any truck in the area the same size or larger, and do a free size upgrade. I always book it online.. only once has the problem gone unnoticed until I got to the site, and that was because the truck went missing in the system. The business had to call and assure the rep they didn't have the truck, then helped me get the replacement transferred to them and driven over.

I recommend hiring some task rabbits and renting a uhaul next time if you're staying in the same city. Honestly it's cheaper and more reliable as you know exactly when and who is moving your things and you can see reviews specific to the person and not the company.

I am fortunate that this is how I’ve gotten through every move so far. Rent a box truck. Buy moving supplies at same place truck is rented. Family and friends participate in a “moving party” food and beverages and goody bags provided for the hard work at the end of the day. Nothing has ever once been broken or marked up. Molly doesn’t have a ton of family in LA, and my best guess is she thought hiring movers would just be the easiest simplest thing, when sometimes the quick answer is family and friends who will work for food.

My dad has had the same condition for almost 10 years. He was on Celebrex awhile but kept having flare ups and then needing steroids. The repeated use of these caused him glaucoma which is no longer present unless he has flare ups. He is now on immunosuppressant meds, but he ended up with COVID-19 because he works at a school and had been exposed that way. He’s also anemic, so it has been almost 3 weeks, and it’s taking forever for him to heal even a bit. There are very few expert doctors on uveitis, and without proper treatment vision loss is a very real threat. Where do you live? We’re in NY.

@@jenniferlynn7575 I hope your dad can get the care he needs :) I am in PA and I see a specialist in MD. If it's not too much of a drive, I recommend that your dad see Dr. Foster at MERSI near Boston. He is the leading expert on uveitis! Unfortunately he's too far for me.

I’ve moved nine times throughout my life (I’m 24) and we’ve had good and bad moves. Our “emergency” move was handled very well. We had to move a piano a couple of times and dealt with profession piano movers who were amazing and guys who did a really bad job. Our last move (Ottawa to Toronto over a decade ago) was ridiculous. They packed up everything, we drove to Toronto, slept on the floor for the first night (they were scheduled to come the next day so that was intentional), they were supposed to show up the following day... they didn’t. We slept in a hotel. The next day, they didn’t come again. We stayed in the hotel again. Then they arrived, two days late! Apparently they “lost” the trucks on the journey from Ottawa to Toronto???? Luckily my mom is a pro at packing and unpacking and the whole moving ordeal but that was truly ridiculous! 😂😂😂 Your story is insane! This company needs to change things!

When my family and I moved houses a few years ago the movers told us it would take 4 hours. It took 8. They were also supposed to send us about 4 guys and they only sent 2. We later found out that the other 2 guys just didn't show up to work that day. My mom had intended for my dad to do little to no work so he wouldn't hurt his back but he ended up having to do a lot more than planned. Also we had to get a u-haul truck and then u-haul said the truck wasn't going to be available until 9:30 but we were supposed to have it at 8:30. And then we had to give it back at 4:30. Not a good experience.

I can vouch, I work for a moving company, have for years, I also ran one for a few years. My fiancé, his dad and brother are all van line drivers. We are NOT allowed to carry furniture across streets. Buildings will claim that “loading zones” are across the street or in a turn lane in the middle of the street. For safety reasons that is not allowed, buildings don’t make the rules, the insurance companies do. Think about it, it is unsafe to be carrying furniture or boxes across streets, even with a crosswalk, the other reason it will take to long. Next time I advise getting an actual pro company. Use either Allied, North American, mayflower, United, atlas, or bekins. Also, the amount of crew members is based on the weigh of the shipment. Another red flag, only use a company who comes out to provide an estimate or at least a FaceTime estimate. Also, LA issues parking permits for moves, which would be set up on your side of the street and they would have an extra guy on rotation to be with the truck at all times. Furniture does need to be taken apart during transit, especially ikea furniture. Lesson learned I would say, I hope this info helps someone. you really do get what you pay for, I highly recommend using a van line, they are built of smaller agents all over the country/world who have the van lines to answer too so you have the benefit of a corporate company backing you, but also the service of a small company. That is the reason for the two names, there will be a van line and then an agent. Hope this helps someone out there!!

I feel for you Molly, moving is super stressful. But I cant think of any moving company that brought supplies other than the blankets, rope and the truck in the 9 times I’ve moved and hired various moving companies. I think theres a difference between a packing service and moving. But these guys defs sound like amateurs who were trying to make a quick buck.
@LovelyLawla
@LovelyLawla 4 жыл бұрын
I am from the UK and when I last moved it was literally a small truck, two guys and a few old blankets. Like you say, moving and packing service are two different things here. I've not heard much about packing service, but the little I have is that either it is super expensive or very risky as they don't always take the same care that you would of your items. If you don't have things packed into boxes, etc, the moving companies here won't touch them, and it is up to you to have the boxes labelled with the rooms or everything gets up into the one space.
