About the channel:
I am Pak, a scientist, a coach but most importantly, a lifter.
I did my PhD on "the minimum effective dose for strength" and currently, as part of the Applied Muscle Development Lab (NYC), my research focuses on strength and muscle growth. As a coach I work with individuals of all professional and sporting backgrounds, from elite strength athletes to busy professionals looking to get stronger and improve their body composition.
As a lifter, there's not much more to say than "I lift and enjoy training hard". Citations for the "I lift" part can be provided upon request.
This channel is essentially me rambling on about all things lifting, including the odd "hot take" here and there with the aim of helping other fellow lifters as well as inspiring non-lifters to lift.

Don’t know if Mike is gonna read this but the story behind Sussudio according to his session bassist was that it was a nonsense onomatopoeia he used in the demo just to have his melody in place, and when it came time for the final track he hadn’t come up with any lyrics for the chorus, so he just left it as is

The legendary bassist Leland Sklar told on his youtube channel why that Phil Collins song is called Sussudio (not just Sudio): Collins sometimes made the vocal lines before actual lyrics. Made some noises, melodies and afterwards tried to find words that would fit. He thought the placeholder "sussudio" worked so well that there was no need to find an actual word to replace it.

Is the reason flies worked so well for old school bodybuilders, is because the flies are just a heavy stretch after they're already fatigued? And so, would you expect them to look the exact same if they replaced flies with weighted stretches for the exact same time?😎
@kban77
@kban77 28 күн бұрын
A weighted stretch as you describe is the eccentric phase of a fly. The fly is good because it gets the lengthened portion of a rep as well as good eccentric action and good pec isolation

I dont understand how people can do 10 to 20 sets per muscle per week. If I did 10 to 20 sets of quad exercises there's no way I'm also doing 10 to 20 sets of hamstrings workouts like deadlifts. If I do 3 sets of pull ups and rows for back, there's no way I'm doing 10 to 20 sets of bicep work outs on top of that. If I do calves and glutes, there's no way I'm also doing 10 to 20 sets of quads per week. And I don't even go to failure most of the time. Am I lifting too heavy?
@caiocavicchia6236
@caiocavicchia6236 28 күн бұрын
Yeah. But you're missing the point: You actually can't recover if you truly train all the muscles for 10 to 20 sets per week (failure). Even on steroids, you have a limit. That's why you prioritize SOME muscles, and not EVERY muscle. I can do 20 sets for quads per week, but all my other muscles will go to maintenance volume. I can do 20 sets for chest, but all other muscles go to maintenance. You need to choose which muscles you'd like to prioritize and all the rest go to maintenance volume (Take the volume that you usually work with to grow it, and reduce it to 1/2 or 1/3, that's your maintenance volume). And after that you do the same with other muscles, rinse and repeat. If you're truly able to achieve 20 sets per muscle (For every muscle) per week, one of two things are happening: 1 - You are not really getting to failure or at least 3 RiR 2 - You do not have a great amount of muscle that your body takes all that long to recover them (In time, when you are building muscle, you will notice that you'll take a lot longer to recover than before)
@caiocavicchia6236
@caiocavicchia6236 28 күн бұрын
And just another take: Each muscle have different performances. Today I can work my quads twice a week. 6 sets per session, 12 in the week. Hamstrings I usually can work them about 1.5 times per week. If I really do a heavy set of SLDLs I'm sure that I'll be really sore for the next 5 days at least Each muscle do have it's own time for healing and strength curves in training, so take the 10 to 20 with a bit of salt, because you can't do that with every one of them I'd suggest you try with what I commented before about choosing the muscles you want to focus first, and then you will feel which of them you can really have a great frequency and which you need to wait a little longer And don't forget to take your deloads every once in a while (For me it's about 7 weeks), as that systemic fatigue builds up over time

Can you explain why mind-muscle connection is important? If we know that, biomechanically, a certain muscle will be recruited to perform a certain movement, doesn't that mean that it will get stimulated regardless of what I feel?
@dylanodonnell3520
@dylanodonnell3520 28 күн бұрын
I’m no expert but I’m assuming it is to recruit the maximum amount of muscle fibres while limiting stabilising muscles taking more load, for example in an incline press you want to emphasis the chest and reduce your front debts taking over when it’s difficult, once again tho could be completely wrong
@greatperhaps7224
@greatperhaps7224 28 күн бұрын
@@dylanodonnell3520 I thought something similar but like, do we actually have any empirical data that confirms that it actually influences muscle growth and it's not just something that we rationalized with no empirical proof?
@DjDolHaus86
@DjDolHaus86 28 күн бұрын
If you are doing isolation exercises then it's important to know how to work the muscle you are trying to exercise, if you don't focus on it and adjust your technique to do the job then you'll naturally start recruiting other muscles as the work load increases. Mind/Muscle connection is super important to learning great technique and if you don't get your technique down early then you can spend years doing inefficient movements for less than optimal results. This isn't to say you won't get results but it's sort of like looking at your savings account after a few years an realising you could have been making more interest on your money (and therefore more money) if you'd put it in a different kind of account or with a different bank.

How can you argue against HIT when the results spoke for themselves? Dorian Yates and Mike Mentzer were huge, how is that possible if the method doesn't work? I don't care how good your genetics are, their training style was clearly what gave them their growth. Very dismissive.
@contentkeeper8769
@contentkeeper8769 28 күн бұрын
They also ignore how many people DO get gains from HIT, and how many people DON’T get gains from their style of training. “Very dismissive” is perfectly accurate to the deceitful rhetoric of the ‘science based’ influencer dogma. They are incredibly afraid of their low IQ ideology being exposed as what it is, objectively false. Arthur Jones (the creator of HIT) and Mike Mentzer trained many naturals, and they have all made progress and some even won bodybuilding shows (biggest being Dorian Yates. 6x Mr. Olympia.) Yet I suppose those people don’t exist? The only people I’ve seen “Doctor” Israetel train are roided up fitness bros who have no real feats to back up their unintelligible claims. Doctor is in quotations because it means nothing. They only bring it up constantly because the average person associates a doctor with being 100% correct. The average person lacks critical thinking skills, so they are easily duped. It seems like they just hand out PHDs to really anyone nowadays. Just attend a few classes in a college no one has heard of and you’re an ‘exercise scientist’ now. This is my reaction when any RP/High volume bro tries talking to me: 7:15
