The Worst NASCAR All Star Race: Texas 2022

The NASCAR All Star race was once one of the most prestegious events on the schedule, but recent lackluster races have left many wondering if it's even worth keeping around. And in 2022, the event epitomized everything wrong with the All Star Race and it was so bad they changed the venue completely.

I know right. This year’s All Star Race was bad, every time I was watching it I was saying “please end this shit show already” until it got to the point I just turned it off. Hopefully next year’s will be better since it’s returning to North Wilkesboro Speedway replacing Texas. This is what I call a big Uno reverse.

It's funny that you mentioned safety, you can clearly see on the final restart and after Blaney actually won that his windownet was down. Can you imagine if he got into a wreck, something we see all the time at the end of all star races, with his windownet down? Like you said, NASCAR could've just called the race They could've let Blaney come down pit road and have his crew fix it without losing position They could've done anything other than what they did.
@RacekorStuff

With the containment seats, the window net doesn’t keep the guy’s head in the car like it used to. It’s more to keep debris from flying in. That said, I agree they should have let him put it up.

The thing about it re-enforcing stereotypes really is true man. I feel your pain. Being a fan of Japanese baseball, I finally got my friends to get up at 5 am and watch the Japan Series with me, Game 3 had been an extremely fun back-and-forth between the Tokyo Swallows and Osaka Buffaloes that felt like a 9 round prize fight, and all three had been very entertaining up to that point. Game 4... 1-0 Buffaloes. Thankfully some of my friends are baseball people so we could appreciate some masterful pitching but... holy fuck I felt so bad. Luckily I also got them to watch Game 5 with me and that was a fun one, walk-off third deck homer and everything. NASCAR's always had a special place in my heart, but yeah... it's not fun to see the direction the sport has headed since I was a little kid in the mid-00s, I just wish somebody saw sense and catered to what the hardcore actually want, not "muh wide appeal" that appeals to no one.

I've noticed that F1 manages to somehow do this to themselves. They call Monaco the "crown jewel" on the season and it's their most famous race. In the US it's one of two races that are on ABC instead of ESPN. If non-F1 fans are going to watch a race it'll probably be that one given all the hoopla around it. The problem is that the Monaco Grand Prix is the worst, most boring race on the F1 calendar, especially from the perspective of a casual fan. Even hardcore fans like me, who can appreciate the kind of skill it takes to race at Monaco, think the race sucks. The track is way too narrow and the cars are too big so it's almost impossible to pass. In the final laps of this years race the top 4 cars were bunched up nose to tail but the track killed any possible intruige about who would win. We knew the cars can't pass so they could have done 100 laps like that and the running order never would have changed.

@EFFEZE

@@BiggieTrismegistus I agree completely. Monaco has to stay on the calendar. But they can alter the track to adapt to the cars now being much wider and longer than before. The barriers could be set back a bit at least in a fair bit of the course. And the chicane after the tunnel could be opened up to allow passing. Same with the first corner. It used to be much less tight so cars could get along side with drs to pass. But they talking about taking Monaco, spa, and France off the calander for more tilker designed crap in the middle East etx

Indycar and F1 are my favorite series but I watch a lot of all kinds of racing. I've tried to get into NASCAR over the past few years but I just can't for some reason. Given the obvious decline in popularity and comments like yours it seems like the series lost something but I can't put my finger on what exactly that is. I hate the playoffs but the sport still managed to maintain its popularity for a while when that format was brought in. What happened to NASCAR seems to mirror what happens in professional wrestling from time to time. Sometimes the stars the align just right and pro wrestling experiences a huge increase in its popularity but then after awhile all those new fans drift away until only the hardcore remain. I seen that cycle twice in my lifetime so maybe NASCAR will make a similar comeback at some point in the future.
@eagflc
@eagflc Жыл бұрын
@@BiggieTrismegistus I really enjoy F1 but I am new to watching it. When I started to watch NASCAR, early 2000's. When NASCAR was at its peak popularity. NASCAR would poke fun at F1, the automotive racing done by young rich playboys, and NASCAR is the "down home racers, Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. As examples, but now it's turned into what they said they weren't. Not all the drivers, the new up and comers though are. Where I lost interest in NASCAR was when Jimmie Johnson retired. I know he went to Indy car and followed a little. But Jimmie kept me invested in NASCAR, but they had made so many changes, almost annually. Now change can be good. If you don't change then you're destined to fade away. It was how often a change or changes were made. Something you like or dislike, maybe gone next season. You don't get to learn to like it or dislike it. I heard in a class, that if a currency keeps changing, people lose faith in it. That's why currencies stay pretty much the same. I think the same can be said for NASCAR and wrestling. New points systems, new regulations, different engine packages at different tracks. I've said a couple of times, "Man, I like (insert rule change). I wonder how long they will keep it." That's where I lost confidence and investment in NASCAR. To those that are passionate and love the sport today, that's awesome and great. For me the sport is on life support but I hope one day it will pull through.

An idea to fix any race at Texas Motor Speedway: Royal Rumble race. Start off with two cars, then every three laps, and new car enters the race, until the whole field is in. Race goes to 120 laps (since the last car would enter at lap 114), and no segments in it. It'd be a sh*tshow, but it sound like TMS races have become one, so it can't be any worse.😂

May 22 was by far the worst day of my life. I lost 2 people who were close to me. I didn't hear about the race until a few days after. I watched it through swollen and blurry vision in a hospital, and even then, it was a shortened "highlights" kind of replay on Fox sports 1. I was hoping to at least see a fantastic next gen show on an intermediate. I was incredibly disappointed. But I didn't even know about the last lap stuff until I got my hands on a laptop and logged into twitter later. So yeah...fuck this race.

Usually what works for me in introducing new people, usually family, to how good a sport can be, in my case, F1, I play them the 2005 Japanese Grand Prix. As a standalone race, it was fantastic to watch. Fate played a part in why this race was so fantastic to watch. Due to rain falling towards the end of the single lap (for each driver) qualifying session, the front runners, including newly crowned World Champion Fernando Alonso, found themselves towards the back of the field. As the drivers who unexpectedly found themselves out front, led initially by Toyota driver Ralf Schumacher, tried to hold on to their lofty positions, there was drama almost immediately with Juan Pablo Montoya crashing his McLaren at the final corner after trying to pass Jacques Villeneuve at the end of lap 1. Montoya was out on the spot, Villeneuve continued, but much to the disappointment of the early leaders, the Safety Car was deployed. After resumption, Ralf Schumacher, his race already ruined by the early safety car, dropped out of contention for the win by pitting very early, lap 8 of 53. Soon after this, a metaphorical changing of the guard moment took place. Amongst the familiar names down the order was the outgoing champion, Michael Schumacher. He had new champion, Alonso right on his tail and after a small mistake by Schumacher on the exit of Spoon Curve, Alonso lined up his Renault to pass Schumacher on the outside of one of the fastest corners in F1, 130R. At 180MPH, Alonso swooped round the outside of the old champion, much to the astonishment of everyone watching. Later, car after car, driver after driver, took their turn up front, but realistically it was difficult to pick out a winner. Giancarlo Fisichella, Alonso's team mate at Renault, led for the longest time in the race, but as the race went on, he could not match the pace of the driver who started from 17th place, Kimi Raikkonen. Dubbed "The Iceman," (much like Terry Labonte), Kimi Raikkonen was without doubt the quickest driver of 2005, but due to unreliability striking repeatedly, which hurt his points total, he was already runner up to Alonso in the championship and couldn't be passed for second either. It looked like more of the same in Japan, he came into qualifying with yet another 10 place grid drop due to needing to change his engine. The penalty wasn't actually applied as he, Montoya, Alonso and Schumacher were at the back anyway in qualifying. Nonetheless, he had a heavy fuel load going into the race and the McLaren he drove was a better Racer than qualifier. After his final stop for fuel only, he found himself second behind Fisichella. Raikkonen reeled him in hand over fist, frequently lapping between a second and a second and a half quicker at least per lap than the Renault. Towards the end of the third to last lap, Fisichella went to the inside of the final chicane, unnecessarily, as Raikkonen wasn't close enough to have a go then, but it gave Raikkonen a chance on to the pit straight. The McLaren was now right with the Renault, hounding him corner after corner. They approached the chicane again, and again, Fisichella unnecessarily defended thin air! The last lap was about to begin, Raikkonen was as close as he been all race, he got alongside as they started the final lap, but Raikkonen's rev limiter was kicking in, and Raikkonen was on the outside. Surely he couldn't take the lead from there could he?! HE ABSOLUTELY COULD!! With fans on their feet and (British) commentators James Allen and Martin Brundle singing his praises, Kimi Raikkonen took the lead of the Japanese Grand Prix of 2005 on the very last lap in spectacular style! Raikkonen went on to win the race, punching the air in delight as he did so, and rightly so. It was and is the best win of Kimi Raikkonen's F1 career. Superb. When I show people that race, I prefix it by saying not all races are as good as this, but it's a demonstration of how exciting the sport can be

I mentioned in another comment to this video that F1 screws themselves by presenting the Monaco Grand Prix as their biggest race of the season. It's certainly historic and there's a lot of glitz and glamor, but the race itself is pretty guaranteed to be one of the worst (if not *the* worst) of the year. In the US more people get exposed to it because it's one of the few races that get shown on ABC instead of ESPN. If a non-F1 fan is going to watch a race there's a good chance it will be Monaco because of all the hoopla around it. I think that's a really bad thing for the sport. For the casual viewer nothing happens at Monaco to draw in their interest and make them want more. I'm a big F1 so I can recognize the sheer difficulty of driving an F1 car around what is essentially an upscale village and even I don't care for the race; qualifying is more entertaining than the race itself. If the Monaco Grand Prix was your first F1 race you'd sit there and wonder why so many apparently insane people are so interested in something so incredibly boring.

@@BiggieTrismegistus playing Devil's Advocate, in the case of Monaco, the buzz about it is the fact that nothing else, not even other street circuits, offers anything else like it. The slowest average speed of any race on the calendar, less than 100mph, the shortest race distance (~160 miles, as opposed to the ~190 miles everywhere else) and the sheer novalty of F1 cars being driven round the narrow streets of the tiny tax haven that is Monaco. It is the modern day obsurdity of it that particularly draws sponsors there, getting the chance to cash in with the very rich who live there for tax reasons. I agree that as a race it's not really an event, all too often the races are "follow the leader" offering negligible opportunities to overtake the car(s) ahead. That being said, on very rare occasions, mixed weather can make it a very tense race (1996 Monaco Grand Prix, for example, where it provided shock upon shock, and the eventual winner, Olivier Panis, started 14th but due to a combination of the timing of his switch to dry tyres, decisive overtaking and little bit of luck, he kept his head to keep David Coulthard behind him for lap after lap to claim what became his only F1 race win)

@@BiggieTrismegistus in terms of races F1 drivers look forward to the most, it seems to be Silverstone, Spa, Monza and Suzuka. In the case of Silverstone, it staged the first world championship Grand Prix and it's high speed direction change coupled with massive knowledge and enthusiasm from the fans. Spa, it's kind of a throwback, mainly because of one series of corner which (with the exception of increasing the runoffs around it) has been largely unchanged since 1939, Eau Rouge/Radillon as well as Pouhon, which is regarded as the more challenging corner of the current layout. Monza, partly because of the uniquely high top speeds and partly because of the atmosphere created by the Tifosi. Suzuka, the drivers relish the challenge of the fast left, right, left, right, left esses at the first part of the lap as well as the enthusiastic welcome they get from the Japanese fans

@@SiVlog1989 If it was up to me I'd like F1 to put a little more emphasis on the British Grand Prix at Sliverstone. As you point out it has a lot of history, is a great track and always features a big enthusiastic crowd. You can actually pass at Silverstone too. I think that race could easily be the "crown jewel" of the F1 calendar. That way if a casual fan tunes into the most prominent race of the F1 season they'd see something more emblematic of what the sport is about.
@SiVlog1989

@@BiggieTrismegistus agreed. I feel like it's a never ending soap opera that they keep fighting to stay on the F1 schedule. To use a NASCAR comparison, I can't imagine the outcry if Daytona was dropped from the schedule completely. That's how speechless I would feel if Silverstone was completely dropped from the F1 schedule

I'm like your dad. I used to watch every second of NASCAR that I could. Both days of qualifying (remember those days?), any practices that were on tv etc. This year I barely watched a combined total of half a race. I used to watch the Daytona 500 from the second they came on air until they went off, then went and watched commentaries, replays etc. Didn't watch a second this year. So, I totally missed this fiasco in Texas. Glad I did. I don't see NASCAR coming back from where they have fallen to any time in the near future. But I sure did enjoy this video!
