So the character assasination is entirely on the anime's hands.

For reference, the Manga only goes for 3 rounds, the first two from the first set and then the final bout from the last, rollerskates, dodgeball and red light green light were NOT part of the manga nor way Luffy saying they should go for another set. The anime in *general* has a lot of issues especially in regards to pacing and this arc, which is already pretty controversial, is a prime victim of that. I would really suggest getting to the manga as well or at least following One Pace which is a optimized version of the anime that cuts down on the damn right awful pacing that happens post time skip(thre Dressora is *legitimately* awful in the anime i'm not kidding PLEASE do no watch the original anime version of that arc). I am excited to see you get into one piece though! I think a video discussing the parts that have most wormed their way into your head, both good and bad, so far would be a good primer to get into more specific topics on the series!

I just read through this arc in the manga, goddamn it was a chore getting through, especially when you know that the next arc is water 7. I probably skipped it in the anime, but did they skip the Kuzan part, or change it, in the anime? Since he is the guy who helps the old dude getting over to the other part of the island in the manga.

I liked this arc in the manga for being short and sweet. Then, when I watched the anime, I understood why its reputation was in shambles. The anime made it way longer than it needed to be, it should have been just 4 or 5 episodes max. *_For context, here is how it all happens in the manga:_* - There were only 3 games: Donut Race (boats), Groggy Ring (“head ball”) and Combat (Luffy vs. Foxy). Foxy gets Chopper after Round 1, Luffy gets Chopper back in Round 2 and gets Foxy's flag in Round 3. After that, Foxy and his crew just leave and that's the last time we see them (in the anime, there's drama between foxy and his crew, so the episodes 225 & 226 are added to patch that up in case Foxy becomes relevant again). - In the Donut Race, only 3 people are allowed to participate per crew, so there are only 2 boats competing: The Taru Tiger (Ussop, Nami, Robin) and The Cutie Wagon (Porche, Capote, Monda). The anime adds a bunch of other boats as “filler”, but events still play out mostly the same. - After Foxy leaves, the crew and Tonjit (the “stilt loving old man”) go back to his house, they find Admiral Aokiji half asleep next to it, he says “I was looking for Robin, I should capture you, but I don't feel like doing it”. Aokiji hears about Tonjit's situation, so he freezes the ocean and makes a huge path for Tonjit to meet his family. When Tonjit leaves, Aokiji thinks about Robin, changes his mind and attacks. The anime, for some reason, separates Aokiji and Tonjit (Tonjit gets saved by a “grandson of his” and Aokiji saves some random shipwrecked people). Not a big deal.

I honestly would love more one piece scenes where the crew gets to actually be a crew. We get a little here and there, but since i read the manga, i am sorely missing scenes where the crew is just...living in their quarters, telling eachother their stories, seeing how they actually do their jobs on the ship, like nami using her literal superpower to sense the climate and so on. Long ring long land is a microcosm of actual crew connection outside of the grand battles, which i appreciate. Please give me a one piece sitcom.

The second Davy Back Fight was filler. In the manga, there was only one Davy Back Fight with the games being the Boat Race, the Zoro and Sanji Ball Game, and Luffy vs Foxy. The other games are anime original filler.

Long Ring Long Island is a really important arc for the simple reason that, they aren't strong enough for the New World, even this "pathetic loser" was able to make Luffy almost lose, this Little things piles up until Saobody where it explodes on Luffy's face

Luffy did not actually accepted the second sets of three games. The anime just made him to be stupider so they can add all the filler games. I genuinely think that Long Ring Long Land was strongly hated cause of the anime and how much they made Luffy worse. Like you said, it's character assassination. Just a heads up, the anime has a tendency of always ruined their writing by adding "filler scenes". Unlike filler arcs where you can simply skip, the filler scenes are intertwined with canon events. Even with one of the recent arcs, the anime added filler scenes"that creates plot holes or ruined characters and their arc. I read the manga, so I never really had any issues with the arc though I do still think it's the weakest arc alongside Amazon Lily.

So two of your biggest complaint of the arc literally stemmed from the anime's extended scenes. That's a win. Cause in the anime there's only three games. So it's impossible for them to even consider a shipwright cause by the second game's victory, the Straw Hat's biggest concern is to retrieved back Chopper. The only canon games are the Boat Race, Sanji/Zoro ball game and the final fight with Afro Luffy.

Long Ring Long Land is by far one of my favorite arcs in the series unironically I wont mention the stuff about the changes the Anime made over the manga cause other people already have, but one good thing I think came from the changes would be the fact that by fighting to get his crew members back in the final fight, one could say that acts as a small but pivotal moment for Robin to continue growing closer to her crew mates which further increases the emotional weight of Enies Lobby. Side note: I totally understand why some people don't like this arc, but imo Thriller Bark is by FAR the worst One Piece arc. And it's not even close. The amazing moments with both Brook and Zoro near the end are amazing but those moments are almost entirely self contained for the characters and have little to do with the events of the arc itself.

this arc is an example of why i love filler. first of all, it’s funny as fuck. second, it gives us meaningful context behind the crew and the connections between them. going into water 7, this arc gives us a look at the straw hats friendships. especially pertaining to robin. it shows us how different this crew is than any other one robin has traveled with and helps us understand why they are so special to her. because the connections they share are like those of a family. she’s never been able to laugh with anyone like she has with them. sure you could come to this conclusion while skipping the davy back arc, but you won’t understand nearly as much. this arc has some of the straw hats funniest moments and shows the rare occurrence of zoro and sanji working together. i feel like unserious things like this arc are important to truly understanding the straw hat pirates. and that’s why i never skip filler. i eat that shit up.
