Linus is so lucky to have had parents supportive of his PC passion. My parents were like "This computer thing is going to ruin your life" and literally forced me away from it all the time.
@volkerball85 Жыл бұрын
This mindset from some parents always boggled my mind. Computers and tech rule the world now, and anyone with any foresight saw it coming years in advance, but so many other people looked at the same data and actually said "NAH THIS IS CLEARLY A PASSING FAD." Wtf? 🤷♂️
@DanielFerreira-ez8qd Жыл бұрын
@@volkerball85 you're assuming they 'looked at the same data', when it's more like they never bothered to check and just couldn't see the world past their livelihoods. @@DanielFerreira-ez8qd That's more what I meant, though. This cracks me up so bad. In my awkward teen years, I used to always see Linus on G4 and his early YT days. It's funny seeing how far things have come, changed... but Linus hasn't. Never change. Alex, Riley, Jake and everyone else are all great. You could do nothing and let all your employees host, work - but you still do it. One of the biggest things that has me coming back - the feel hasn't changed after all these years. It doesn't feel like some big commercial YT channel. Even though you're a multi-million dollar business now. Enjoy the same goofiness that has always been present- 10+ years now, shaking my head as you vertically build PCs, and the outlandish things you love doing with tech. Never change. PS. @11:00 no joke... I bought my house when i was just turning 20 years old. One of the first things i did, bought some logitech 5.1 sound system. To hang the speakers up, i took some 4x8" plexiglas covers from the dumpster. Found some little metal pieces, bent them to 45 degree angles, drilled holes on the end. Mounted them to my walls in my room, 2 speakers mount on top, 2 from the bottom. Now, 20 years later... they are still in use, granted they have 2cm of dust on them, but it still works. Same speakers too!

LOL, Linus, I know we are ages apart, but this trip down memory lane was great! A lot of the components were the same in both of our builds. The desk from 2005, I finally retired mine of that exact same one last year. The roasting you took from the dynamic duo was light-hearted and entertaining. Great video. Brought back memories of all the super-jank stuff I used to do to my computers. I once built a GPU slot cooler out of at least 20-30 486 CPU size fans. That thing was a monstrosity. My first water cooling setup had a waterblock that I made myself out of some random piece of aluminum that just happened to be the right size. I just had to smooth out the side that mated with the CPU. No fins inside of it, but I did have the water being pumped right into the center of the lid. The lid was just a piece of aluminum that I cut round to size and used silicone to glue it to the top of the block. The pump I used was a fish tank filter pump. I still have that waterblock.

The part of this video that's got me the most envious is Linus's history with his wife. ❤ My god man, that relationship history?! It's enough to make a single guy self-reflect on what his priorities should be. Your ascetic tastes as a youth may have been questionable, but your eye for quality people has clearly been strong for a long time. I'm jealous, I really am. I'd trade all my tech training/certification experience just to be half as good as you are at "finding good people to surround yourself with". Making friends & relationships is infinitely harder and less straightforward than even the most anti-consumer tech product repair. At least with tech, you've got guides, forums & manuals/design docs. Relationship advice & "help" is 89% scams 1% re-packaged general self-help and 10% cults. The remaining 1% is all your friends & family suggesting the same handful of Apps that you've either previously used or tried to avoid due to a reasonable desire to not waste time in bad app environments.

Was a fun time for cooling, there was always a few cpu's with huge amount of headroom for overclocking. My Pentium D950 around 2006 was 3.4ghz stock, 5.1ghz stable overclock, and i think people were setting records of over 6ghz on it. Around 2 years later moved to the QX6850 which was insanely pricey, had huge amount of a voltage range, but was a pox to get it from 3ghz stock to a stable 3.6ghz.

I think it's hard to appreciate the process of learning new things before online tutorials became commonplace, especially video tutorials. I do think there were some advantages back then (being forced to go slow and learn at your own pace, not have others to compare yourself to and therefore not feeling bad about your progress) and some disadvantages now (an overwhelming number of resources, an emphasis on learning quickly, and paid services that end of being scams). But generally if you just need to learn how to tie a specific knot or something, it's infinitely easier to do that now compared to even the early-2000s, let alone the pre-internet age. In twenty years, people will probably be saying the same thing about learning something before AI. Look at programming, where not only can you ask the AI to explain something to you, you also get an answer that's more specific to your code (in contrast to the documentation, which obviously has to be generic) but you can even ask follow-up questions if that explanation is still confusing.
