The Worst Place on Earth to Be Shipwrecked

In 1815, a thick fog enveloped captain James Riley and his ship as he was lost off the coast of Africa. Due to being blinded, the ship then crash landed on the shore of some unknown land. This would begin a horrifying series of events, not because of the land he found himself on but instead because of who he encountered. This is his horrifying story, and as always, viewer discretion is advised.

I like the object. Both mean the same thing. @@Arctanis-vt3hl they're also very wrong in trying to point out that loved is technically a past tense word but can be used in the same context of love cause love can also be used in the past tense. I loved my ex, I used to LOVE my ex. So saying i loved the movie or saying i really love this movie both mean the same damn thing. just makes these two look dumber than the o.p. depends on context if they can't figure out context they probably just barely passed English and that's most American kids these days. It's a proven fact kids are entering grade 9 reading at a 5th grade level. Thats the lowest in many years.

These older stories, I appreciate more than the newer ones. The situations and circumstances the people back then had to go through was just incredibly, absurdly, difficult and heartbreaking. In this story in particular, more importantly, it wasn't just an extraordinary survival story, it also changed the course of history ❤ Thank you for continuing to shed light on these lost forgotten true tales, and the people who struggled through, and survived, their insurmountable odds. ❤

Hi! I have a story suggestion, it's kind of a tearjerker. It's about the Third Man Factor -- where people in survival situations kind of dissociate and imagine/project another person with them, encouraging them and being beside them. Stephanie Schwabe is a scientist and cave diver whose husband, also a cave diver, had died. While exploring a cave in the Bahamas to collect samples, she lost track of her guide rope and became lost. She thought she was going to die, when she experienced the third man factor of her husband appearing beside her and helping to guide her out. It's a really cool story, and the third man phenomenon is a pretty interesting topic in general. They don't really know what causes it. I think it sounds kind of similar to what people with DID go through, where a different internal personality takes over in a traumatic situation, and the original personality either doesn't remember or feels like they're an onlooker in their own head. Except this is temporary and externalized. It's really neat

The subconscious part of the brain is always working away without you much noticing until those moments it provides an answer to your conscious brain. It's pretty amazing and, sometimes, a bit eerie. Such as listening to radio music and suddenly knowing what the next song is before it plays, as an example. The station programming would only have a specific set of songs in their current playlist and would play a block of them at a time. The subconscious would silently learn a certain combined string and eventually deduct what's next from that combination of specific songs. It's also why you suddenly remember something you had been trying to recall earlier. Such as trying to remember a name which you've certainly know in the past, but have trouble doing so in the moment. Just consciously ask yourself the question three times, "what was the name of ...?", then go back to what you were doing before without worrying about it anymore. It often pops right into your head minutes later while you're in the middle of doing other things. Try it sometime. The gears are always grinding behind the curtain. I think that subconscious side of the brain, the one with more information & rational processing capability, can take over a more active role when in panicked situations such as that. The side effects being a good rational answer popping into your head and your conscious brain having to explain it all to your senses in some way. Which can possibly end up resembling a supernatural occurrence.

@fredanderson7728
@fredanderson7728 8 күн бұрын
What's scary about this story is that what happened to James and his men can still happen today in that region of Africa. Oh sure, modern technology allows for the ability to call for help just about anywhere on the surface of the world, but this technology can easily be broken, go missing, or otherwise be unable to send a signal. On top of that, even if one can successfully signal for rescue, it still takes most of a day if one is super-lucky or days to get to that area depending on the method of transportation and it's still enough time for any number of things to happen. Finally, the nomadic tribes mentioned in this article still exist in that area of the Sahara desert and are still just as likely today to enslave or kill anyone they find, whether it's one of their own or a foreigner. It is very easy to take the technology and customs of modern society for granted.

@@kkdakh4n450 Go to a poor third world country as a clear foreigner with no transportation and nowhere private to stay and prove them wrong. You'll be robbed or mugged of the few thing you do have as soon as you blink, specially your valuable phone. You won't know the language, and you'll be at everyone you meet's mercy to not have evil intentions. Don't think it can't spiral out of your control fast, even in wait if your country is coming for rescue. This occasionally happens to tourists and press, and it takes over a year just to facilitate their return, if they even survive.

Also, the town neighboring Middletown Connecticut (the town where Riley was born) was Portland Connecticut, back then known as “East Middletown”. This township was a large ship building community built in the banks of the Connecticut River, and seeing all of the ships being built and sent down the river out to sea likely inspired him to want to endeavor in a seafaring lifestyle.

I would die if left anywhere away from other humans. But, for a very awful reason: I am an active fentanyl addict. It's the worst drug I have ever had the grand misfortune of becoming chemically dependent upon. If you havent tried it, DONT. If you use it but aren't addicted yet, STOP. It's no joke. 10 years. 10 years now I've been strung along constantly searching for and paying for and pleading for this terrible, terrible drug. Never ever touch it if you havent, and try to quit if you have. I'm trying. It's so difficult. Sweat pours from me as I shiver. A breeze feels like razor blades on my skin. I have no appetite. No strength. I loathe it and loathe myself for allowing it to take hold as firmly as it has, down to my soul.
