The videos of the re-potting have been very helpful for me. I would never cut away so much material thinking I was killing it. Now I understand how to tell good roots from bad. I should probably invest in some good moss. Mine is bargain basement but it was what I had. By now I have gotten all my orchids “properly “ re-potted. These kind of videos are extremely helpful and will hopefully lead to healthy blooming plants for years to come!

The gorgeous Den-Phal I recently bought came in soil with a coconut husk plug. It was indeed a nightmare to remove and I tore off a lot of good roots by accident in the process. I lost the 2nd flower spike and a lot of leaves because of it :/. But last week I noticed 4 new growths that are all growing very fast, so it seems to be recovering! I didn't even know they could produce this many new growths at the same time!

Great to know! I would opt for putting pots of my preferred medium next to the pot with the coconut husk in it and wait for the orchid to grow into them. Perhaps I would not now. 😊

Here in my place orchid nurseries sell almost every sympodial orchid in that coconut husk media 😢such a horrible way to grow them ..totally agree with you on it being the worst 😡 So many of mine are in setback due to this ...I have to soak them overnight and then try to dissect and salvage as many roots as possible.. I have repeatedly complained nurseries regarding this issue

Hey hello, if you happen to read this reply, would you let me know how you remove the coco husks from the cattlyas. I have recently ordered few, and they all are in coco husk. And if we destroy few roots, how long it takes for the orchid to recover? I am very new to orchids like 2 months old.😊.

@@AnirimaGhosh hey Sad to hear the same fate with your orchids If the mushy brown and dried up roots get damaged, its absolutely fine Try avoiding too much damage to the fleshy green new root tips It usually depends on the type of hybrid, most of them take a couple of weeks while others take months And it also depends on the season, if its in the winter months, they take longer time to adapt
@rakshith.s.aradhya

@@AnirimaGhosh what I do is usually soak them overnight in a tub of water And remove the husk next day Its comes off easily with forceps /tweezers Some times the whole husk comes off easily if the nursery has recently potted it. If its quite long then the roots would have grown fully into the husk which is more troublesome If u can't wait Then atleast soak it for a few hours in warm water and then proceed Its a time consuming process but do it slowly bit by bit Once you've reached halfway, again spray it with water and wash off the debris and clean the roots. Its best to repot the orchid immediately in new potting media to prevent drying up of the damaged roots

I was in the same boat 6 years ago w/ a baby pigeon (4 days old) w/ a splayed leg. It's sibling died & parents abandoned him bc his leg got stuck in the grate the nest was on and it couldn't move (which the parents knew was a death sentence) so it was starving and leg was abscessed. Was a huge learning curve but such an amazing experience! Leg got splinted and fully recovered. Took many pics of him among my orchids. Good luck to the baby jackdaw!

It is always so awful to me when I repot my orchids and I have to manhandle them to get them out of whatever pot or medium the nursery put them in. My only consolation is that the night is darkest before dawn, so to speak; it is the only way for the orchid to get better. And once the set back is over, they will thrive❤

Thank you for this hopeful and helpful video. I have an orchid that recently lost its new eye and just died and the previous pseudobulb died along with it. I still have 4 older canes that are alive but they’re not doing much. I guess I’ll wait for something to happen. Fingers crossed 🤞🏾.

I just bought my first orchid on impulse, love your beginner care videos. Placed a rePOTme order for medium and a pot. Will it be ok if it takes a few days for the new home to show up or should i get it out of the nursery/wet pot it came in and let it air out ? Any advice anyone could give would be helpful. Thanks 😊

Little question. I was given a flowered phalaenopsis from the store a few weeks ago (I already have another at home) and it had a small leaf coming out of the center, today I have noticed that this leaf is starting to die, it is blackened. This had never happened to me before. Will the plant die or could it be that it will take out another leaf again? It is in good health, it has 6 healthy leaves and soo many roots.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl Жыл бұрын
Hi, there's no way to tell if the crown is completely damaged and the orchid will make a keiki, or if it can still put out new roots. Just let it be for now and see what happens next. If more leaves start to yellow, then it's crown rot thought and needs addressing! Good luck!

Hi, I have really bad luck with my dendrobium phenelopsis purchases😕. Bouth of them come with demaged risome. The bigest cane produced a keki at the top with very well devleloped roots (20 cm long) so I am wondering can i cut part of cane with a keki ? Becouse I am new to the hobi and I don't think that I have good enough skills to seperate just the keki.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl Жыл бұрын
Hi, yes if you don't think you can twist the keiki off safely, you can cut the top of the mother cane with it 😊

Hello gorgeous. Need your advice. My old orchid (phalaenopsis) is large and has many aerial roots. Can it be divided into two parts? Cut off the upper part with most of the aerial roots, plant them and leave the lower part to recover. Maybe you could make a video about it?
@LukeSWErrthing
@LukeSWErrthing Жыл бұрын
I don't think orchids can be propagated like that, but I could be wrong. To my understanding, the only way to propagate an orchid (without pollination) is via keikis. What you want to do might irreparably damage your orchid. (Not the expert, so I could be wrong). Phalaenopsis are monopodial, so you would be basically hacking at the mother plant
@StasysFPV
@StasysFPV Жыл бұрын
@@LukeSWErrthing - One of my orchids is very old but in pretty good condition. Its long trunk, a lot of aerial roots, I thought maybe I could "rejuvenate" it by dividing it into two parts. I wouldn't want to lose her after such an operation.
@veronicac660
@veronicac660 Жыл бұрын
The upper part, as long as there was no infection, could continue to grow with adequate roots but would likely be set back. The chances of the lower part producing a keiki is extremely low, so it wouldn't be a propagation, just a size reduction
@LukeSWErrthing
@LukeSWErrthing Жыл бұрын
@@StasysFPV as another user said, you would basically wind up with a smaller plant and one of the halves will likely die off (if not both, given how likely it is the cuts you make will get infected). I don't think that is what you're looking for by doing that, so I wouldn't recommend it. Monopodial orchids grow upward and get rid of the bottommost leaves as they grow. If you need to cut the trunk down because it's not doing the orchid any favors, you can do that and seal the cut with hot silicone glue (MissOrchidGirl has a video on treating stem cuts). But no... I don't think you'll get the result you want from this procedure.
