I work in emergency management and this incident is famous. Employee 1 is a cause of debate. Employee 1 sent the message in error, but the processes and protocols to protect them from this sort of thing weren’t working. I remember I was in 5th grade when this happened. My family heard it on the radio. Lots of trembling and wailing from fear and panic as my parents quickly went to get supplies and water. My friend’s parents called my mom, saying how they were going to go to Walmart for shelter. I also heard a lot of people driving away. To this day I don’t fully understand that but fear makes you do crazy things. I remember at night I stared out into the view of the city and pondered over the fact that if that alert was real, I wouldn’t be standing here looking at the view. I had to keep my phone around because I would get distressed if it was gone because I needed to know if another alert was sent, even at home, where my family’s phones were everywhere. I also had to have the radio on at night so I could always hear it. And then when I woke up, if I heard the radio and heard a lot of people driving away, the memories would come flooding back and I’d have a mini panic attack. In the heat of the moment, my parents treated it like it was real just in case, but they were really calm and determined and had a feeling that it wasn’t real because the sirens would have gone off. There were no sirens to be heard the entire time. The affects of the alert lasted for a month and a half for me. Soon I completely got over the PTSD, but it did take time. Now it’s a joke at school, a light thing to talk about with your friends at lunch sort of thing. One time my friend wanted a “throwback Friday” and sent a screenshot of the alert in the groupchat, and it was funny to see everyone who experienced it laughing, including me, and everybody who didn’t experience it have their faces grow pale and exclaim in surprise. I still get a small hint of dread every time I hear about the situation in detail as well as when I hear the amber alert despite me only knowing of the alert through the radio. And I still have a hard time believing that the terror lasted for more than 5 minutes. Seriously, looking back it felt like only 5 minutes, but it’s probably my mind blocking memories to cope. But this event did help me better write the PTSD of one of my characters in my novel because he went through a similar situation as this, so at least I was able to learn something out of it.

I have good news for both of you: you are far enough away that you could survive. A bunker in your backyard deep enough to shield from the gamma-ray burst will protect you initially, and with an air filter and enough provisions for everyone for a month (or two to be safe) you can outlive the fallout. 2.5 miles is roughly the "instant death" radius (gamma rays and firestorm) iirc, so you're actually further away than you would think. Just get underground, or if it isn't possible, shelter *lying down* against the basement wall that most faces the target. Gamma ray bursts are quick, and they only come from one direction, so putting earth between you and the bomb using defilade/angles might be enough to save your life. Fallout is dangerous for about 30 days, so don't go outside in that time, if you can avoid it. If you lack shelter, but have survived the gamma rays (hiking in a valley or driving through a tunnel or something), then you still have time to find it before the radioactive dust settles. Roads will likely be clogged, but use back roads to get to shelter if you must. If your house is intact, you may want to use duct tape to seal drafty areas. Place a tarp in the bathtub prior to the blast, and fill it up with water. Your tub is dirty and soapy, and poses a contamination risk. Still, risky water is better than no water at all. Society will not end with a nuclear war, but it will damn well be disrupted. The biggest risk to our society from a nuclear war is, I think, in our reactions to it. If we allow our leaders to seize power in the crisis, then we will be destroyed.

You know, what if a real event happens, and the person in charge of sending out the warning message remembers this and thinks, "you know what, I don't want to end up like that guy, this has to be a false alarm, I'm not taking this chance" and then, boom (literally)?

I was personally effected by this in a unique way living on island at the time, it actually led to me suffering from anxiety about living on island and i had to move back to the mainland. I think verizon should have to answer for this, i miss the islands so much... To expand on this, I was in the jungle outside of cell service, I got the first message alerting to the missile, but never got the second message so I waited for about 2 hours in a small group of people to get "vaporized". Thanks for covering this topic :D

I remember that day. I woke up to the siren and message alert. I immediately started filling up a 5 gallon water container, grabbed some snacks, and decided to head towards the “basement” that had a concrete foundation and walls. I was so scared. My mom called me crying saying that she loved me and that she was headed for the tunnel because they had nowhere else to go. In those moments you think of everyone you love and how you dont have enough time to say goodbye. You just have to brace for impact. Once everyone got the memo that it was a false alarm, it was like the island let out a collective sigh. The rest of the day was one of the most beautiful days i can remember. The sun was out. Everyone packed their cars with all their beach needs; fishing poles, surf boards, boats, barbecues, and coolers. We rejoiced because we felt like we all escaped death. It went from being one of the worst days of my life to such a beautiful one. Since then its been easy yo be grateful for my life and the health of my friends and family. I think back to that a lot.
