I don't know how you do that, but the composition of the intro music with the scenes of the boat and the moist winch at the end is so incredible wonderful that the tunes stuck in my mind all day long. Your episodes were great before already, but since the Australia season trailer you moved to a new level.

Great explanation from Nick about the causes of problems with toilets on yachts. It’s almost never paper or poo that blocks toilets - hand towels, wipes and tampons excepted, they’ll block anything! No, the overwhelming major cause is the build up on the inside of the exit hose/s caused by that wonderful combination of urine and sea water. The solution? Pump for a lot longer than it takes to clear the bowl - you need to also clear the hose!

Hahaa, the blocked toilet will be an ongoing issue... get the water maker organised and flush with fresh, it will also reduce the smells. The ureic acid crystals are like limestone and will build up over time and not be so easy to clear. The soft water from a watermaker, or suitable marina, will work wonders... That jib is the wrong shape for downwind, the Genoa sounds like a much better bet, it will all get sorted with time, it's all part of the fun! Great video.

One of our tanks did this but we didn’t have access to any acid to clear it. So we pumped out the tank (the marina has a manual pump). Then I filled the tank half full with water and a 1/4 cup of yeast. The next day we pumped out the tank again. Opened the valve that would normally allow the tank to dump at sea and put duct tape over the over flow vent. Then we used the manual pump to pump until the blockage broke loose and sea water came into the tank and into the pump. Not the fastest way to do it, but it works in a pinch.

Did you get to see the "Lady Enid" when you were at Airlie Beach? She's a beautiful 1960's ketch. I got to go for a sail on her a few years ago, just after a cyclone ripped through Airlie. She managed to hold up really well, considering the force of the cyclone. They don't make boats like her anymore.

Hi all, I know you're going to hate getting more advice again this week, Nick, but you could also raise the attachment of the sheet to the job at the Klew to the topmost hole. It won't help much, but every bit helps! If it really bothers you, in the mean time, you could string a line across the deck from the kleats on the sides of the hulls and hold the sheet down like the barber haul you suggested. it would need to be kleated from pretty much the front of the hulls to have any 'pull' down effect. This would still allow the self tacking. You'd set the sail as per normal, then apply the cross sheet to the desired tension, you may then need to re-tension the jib a little. Just a working fix, your idea - to re-route the jib sheet - would be the best option. I hope you and Terysa are having fun up there (although you're both probably back down in SA now). Shame about the weather. Stay safe. Let us know when you head to Vietnam. Cheers.

Boating and sailing for a lifetime without an anemometer. Learned to read the water and use a wetted finger etc so no reliance on instruments. White caps usually form at 12-15 knots, reef 1, gunnels going under for reef 2. Yes, instruments can be really nice, but unreliable.

I've always wondered why you don't come in from upwind side and land on the trampoline. It wouldn't be a soft landing if the boat was moving up and down, but the drone seems fairly rugged.
@sailingrubyrose
@sailingrubyrose 3 жыл бұрын
With the drone? It's because the drone is more likely to crash into the rigging which would cause it to fall into the water. If you're landing the drone by making it 'follow' you then you have more control- if it's not in the right position then the boat simply moves away from it. If you're trying to land it while standing on the trampoline, you only get one shot- if you mess it up or get the incoming angle wrong or if the boat goes over a wave or whatever, the drone will crash. So that's why we do it that way (but it sometimes backfires!!).
