Mantine's version counterpart is actually Skarmory if you look at their stat spread. I think Delibird's gold counterpart is actually gligar. Finally, Sneasel isn't a version exclusive, you can find it in both gold and silver unless you count crystal where you find it in Ice Path.
@alvarobarba27 Жыл бұрын
True, I used to think gligar and sneasel were counterparts in gen 4 because they evolve with similiar items, one by day and the other by night, and they and their evos have the same base stat total. It's so weird, they could be perfect counterparts, but they've never been. Instead, they keep pairing gligar with random pokémon that have nothing in common like teddiursa in BDSP or aipom in SV
@waterierStone Жыл бұрын
Yeah. skarmory and mantine even have the opposite stats. mantine has special stats while skarmory has physical.
@nickdentoom1173 Жыл бұрын
tbh, i don't think it matters much.. Counterparts are subject to change anyways. Heck, look at gen 1 and 2 for comparsion Oddish and Bellsprout are counterparts in gen 1, but lost that status when Bellossom became a thing and Bellsprout line didn't get anything Pinsir and Scyther counterparts in gen 1, both got different counterparts in gen 2 (Pinsir and Heracross both being a single stage and Scyther with Steelix, both evolve via trade while holding Metal Coat). Jynx lost counterpart status with Electabuzz and Magmar in gen 4, when they got turned into a 3 stage line, while Jynx remained 2 stage. Instead, Rhyperior replaced Jynx as the counterpart partner for Electivire and Magmortar. Jynx became counterpart to Mr. Mime in gen 4, with the addition of Mime. Jr, while Sudowoodo and Mantine became counerparts as well due to Bonsly and Mantyke. However, Jynx and Mr. Mime lost counterpart status due to Galarian Mr. Mime being a thing. The only consistent counterparts are the starters and box-art legendaries. Heck, i always personally considered the Kanto Trade Evo's of being counterparts to eachother as well, but obviously, that also changed, with Golem and Machamp being counterparts to eachother in gen 6, but losing the status with the other 2, who gained a Mega. Then Machamp and Golem lost counterpart status with eachother in gen 7, when Alolan Golem became a thing.

For in-game, I would consider Lilligant to be vastly superior to Whimsicott. The fact that Whimsicott is a fast status user with middling attacking stats with the best status move it can learn via level being Stun Spore while being pure grass in Gen 5 hurts it. On the other hand, Lilligant is one of the few non-bug types that gets Quiver Dance naturally, and it can pair it up with Petal Dance for massive damage and Own Tempo to not get confused. While it may be a one trick pony, in a playthrough, that one trick can lead to Lilligant dominating.

They're both early game bugs that we as players have been actively conditioned to ignore and/or replace, but I disagree on Ariados vs Ledian. Ledian evolves four levels sooner, learns Supersonic instead of Scary Face, gets the screens by levelup (which is especially notable in Gen II, since the moves haven't yet become TMs whose availability is given out like candy), and has a much better stat spread for its point in the game. Ariados is a slow physical attacker... whose best physical attack by levelup is Fury Swipes at level 34. Meanwhile, Ledian has decent speed and a surprisingly high SpDef, letting it tank a few hits while you heal your main attackers. The best thing that can be said for Ariados is that it can learn Poison Sting, which might not be enough of a saving grace prior to the first badge, given that there's an entire location named after and populated by an unpoisonable Grass/Poison.

Lilligant might just have Quiver Dance over Whimsicott, but that's just what it needs (for the main game). Sure, its lack of coverage is unfortunate, but it's less of a problem in the main game, when you often know what you're gonna fight. *Clawitzer - Dragalge :* Aside from that weird evolution level thing, Dragalge has at least a pretty unique typing, when Clawitzer has hundreds of Water types to compete with.

Since when is sneasel a Silver exclusive? Either Bulbapedia needs updating, or it can be caught in Gold in the same places. It was skarmory that was gligar's counterpart in gen 2, it wasn't until gen 3 that sneasel replaced it as gligar's counterpart in the Kanto remakes. (Edit: I just noticed it was pointed out that while it lives in the same route as gligar, skarmory has an identical stat total to mantine, making it more likely to be mantine's counterpart, with delibird being gligar's counterpart. Either way, sneasel appears in both gen 2 versions, so it's not version exclusive) You're right about seviper though. I'm almost certain Sneasel isn't a version exclusive. I would go with Delibird for GS. Sapphire actually has the better version exclusives over Ruby, except maybe Latias. I prefer the best poison type introduced in that generation to just another normal type. Kyogre is better than Groudon. Sableye is better than Mawile because it has a unique dual type and has no weaknesses. But the worst version exclusive of RS is Shiftry. Ludicolo has an excellent and unique Water/Grass typing, while Shiftry is just another bad Grass/Dark-type along with Cacturne.
@RyouShi98 Жыл бұрын
The saving grace about Shiftry in Gen III is it has the excellent Signature Move Extrasensory which has triple Psychic's PP in exchange for only 10 lower base power. Now, you have to raise a Nuzleaf until level 49 but I did that once in Emerald and it wad still surprisngly usable. Grass STAB in Hoenn's waterworld doesn't hurt it either I suppose.
@RyouShi98 Жыл бұрын
Also, Mawile and Sableye are both pretty weak, Sableye's zero weakness is about equal to Mawile's whopping 12 resistances. Also Intimidate pushes it over the edge IMO. I think they were meant to be used for the early game where you can get something with really cool typing (Steel, Dark, and Ghost were really rare in Johto). Funnily, Mawile is the absolute best at one very specific thing: Tough Pokemon Contests. Catch one in Sky Pillar and it has all the moves needed ro easily sweep the whole thing

Red exclusives always get on my nerves because people genuinely pick to play (fire) red over blue and leaf green all the time and all they have is Growlithe (in fire red, since Vulpix is better in gen 1). Why would they even do that??

Brute Bonnet and Iron Hands- The ones you encounter multiple of (besides the donphans) before entering the Zero gate and are on the same spots on Sada and Turo's respective teams. Flutter Mane and Iron Jugilus- Are on the same spots on Sada and Turo's respective teams. Isn’t skrelps location and access to the rod for fishing offered fairly late mid game in Pokémon x? So it evolves kinda when you’d be around that level anyways if you train it up to match the rest of your team.

I'd argue Sableye is a decent Pokemon early game in Gen 3, since, despite it's stats being lower than most other Pokemon, it's typing gives it zero weaknesses, meaning you have a safer switch out against Brawly, (which Sableye can beat by itself in Emerald) Wattson and Norman. Can use Fake Out and Nightshade for flinching and inflicting damage equil to you level at the time, which can help you catch other Pokemon.

I always thought mantine and skarmory were supposed to be opposite version exclusives. They literally have the opposite stats. Sneasle isn't a version exclusive at all either. it's just because gligar has a similarly named evolution item and both evolve by time of day as well.

Glameow is even worse in Gen 4 because much like Gen 2 Sneasel, there is no reason for it to be found as late as it is, and the context makes it even worse. Stunky can be found under the Cycling Road in Diamond, and I THINK you can access that route’s grass before beating Gardenia, so you can have a Poison-Type for her if you didn’t pick Chimchar. Glameow on the other hand is found right outside Canalave, you can’t even find it until you’re able to surf (halfway through the game), but the gym you’re about to go up against is a steel gym, meaning Purugly is almost completely useless, and you likely have a counter to Steel by then anyway.

Personally I feel like the Sun and Moon section should have mentioned the exclusive Lycanrocs. Being the only games where each evolution is locked behind what version you're playing, it's a big factor for anyone looking to use Lycanroc on their team. And Sun didn't just get the long end of the stick, it ripped the whole stick out of Moon's hands and started smacking them with it. Midday Lycanroc is a huge rarity- a fast sweeper Rock type. That alone gives it a value niche to fill, but it also got Accelerock, a decently strong priority move, as a signature. What did Midnight form get, in contrast? Compared to Midday it has a whopping _30_ less speed, which all gets evenly distributed into HP, Defense, and Special Defense. At 10 points each. It's such a massive loss of precious speed, all for what cannot in good faith be called a meaningful improvement in bulk. And instead of a cool signature move, Midnight Lycanroc gets Counter, a mediocre retaliatory move that it most likely won't get any use out of because it's still really frail. I'm sure I'm not the only person who was originally going to get Moon when the gen 7 games were released, only to see the huge discrepancy between the two Lycanrocs and immediately jump ship. It's outright unfair what they did to Moon.

@misguidedkpopper8674 Жыл бұрын
I don't understand your criteria for this honestly because you use all types of reasons for one but don't apply those same reason for another Pokemon. Like you basically say Cranidos>Bastiodon because Bastiodon is defensive and defensive Pokemon are useless in Story runs but then go on to say Braviary and Mandibuzz are similar levels for story runs even though Mandibuzz has AWFUL offensive stats and is a pure defensive Pokemon. Also Seviper is absolutely not useless. 100 in both offensive stat makes it a very good usable ingame Pokemon since it learns decent physical and special attacks. Even in RS, Mawile is the worst exclusive because it literally learns no good move that makes use of its STAB. Also while yes Iron Leaves v Walking Wake is a no brainer. The worst version exclusive is certainly all paradox in Violet (sans Iron Bundle) compared to Scarlet's Flutter Mane. It's irrelevant what it is counterpart to, but Flutter Mane (and even Roaring Moon) in Scarlet are significantly superior to every single Violet paradox Pokemon (outside of Iron Bundle).
