I think this is one of the first where I nearly entirely disagree with you. I think this is one of the best "8-bit" Sonic games out there. The physics and controls feels so natural and the graphics are top notch. It all looks so clear and in proportion. Many more colours, much better sounding music, I think the only place I agree with you is with the rehashing of some older levels. But some unique areas are here such as bosses which then got rehashed into Sonic Advance (and Advance 2). Still a good review, don't get me wrong. Made me chuckle quite a bit, especially with the "I think Knuckles died" remark, haha! There are some mods to this game too, including Sonic Pocket Winter and... *ahem*, RHS Pocket Adventure =P

Oh that's where I went wrong, I should have played RHS Pocket Adventure instead lol but yeah idk I just wasn't feeling this one. Felt fine to play, but it didn't do anything for me that Sonic 2 didn't already do. Triple Trouble on the other hand was a whole new adventure and it had me excited for what was coming next. I see what you mean, I don't think it's a bad game, but I don't see it as much more than a lesser Sonic 2.

@Sonic any variant of the Game Boy could've handled a port of the Game Gear Sonic games, with the obvious concessions in color. Their specifications and abilities are surprisingly similar once you get past the different screen types - both Z80 based, both have the same RAM and equivalent VRAM. The GBC in particular is around twice as fast as the Game Gear and with more RAM. A port could be an interesting project for somebody... Also NGP/NGPC most certainly isn't sub-NES or sub-Master System hardware - it's easily comparable to the GBC (a lot more powerful than the NES) and I believe it has a more sophisticated processor, that would make a complicated platform engine like 16-bit Sonic easier to implement. And that's where I agree this game deserves more credit - recreating Sonic's Genesis physics really wasn't easy at the time, even on a superior platform, and it's implemented quite admirably here. There's better learning resources available now when it comes to getting the physics right, which might unfairly trivialize the achievement in the present day. Sonic Genesis on GBA is a good example of how it can go wrong.

One thing I love about this game is how it’s basically a transition from the Genesis era to the Dreamcast era, as shown by Sonic’s sprite being the classic proportions but with green eyes, or more obviously, how Eggman appears in his Genesis design at the beginning of the game and then in his Dreamcast design at the end And yes I did get those points from SomeCallMeJohnny, why are you asking?

@@SIG7Pro Nope alot of the Eggman sprites are fully based on the original Eggman design but later in development they wanted to redo the sprites in order to fit with what Adventure was doing, but most likely in the end they couldn't redo all the sprites in time, but in-game the transition from classic Eggman to dreamcast era Eggman is very much there now intentional or not. The proof of this transition happening while in development comes simply from Eggmans stache, with his dreamcast design sprites having a brown color while all the classic eggman ones having the same color pallete as his red clothes.

The gameplay alone makes this game amazing since it actually feels like classic sonic. Half of the charm of the game as well is playing it with the actual stick of the NGPC which is near perfection which kinda throws off a lot of hindsight emulator based reviews. I know a lot might see this as “Sonic 2 again” but from An evolution of the hedgehog point the game is pretty important. I think I heard about some changes taking place mid development as the transition was switching from classic towards more a Adventure style. I love your reviews but this one to me just seemed to look too much the future, and not simply what existed up to this point. You grew up in a world where Sonic 2 has been ported to my grandma’s “I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up” bracelet so it’s understandable to see this as being nothing too impressive in a world where we can play RE 4 on a handheld, but being played on an actual NGPC with a non back lit screen? Nostalgia or not, it still has a certain something that at least makes me still play it every now again. Sorry, I’m just a history teacher so it bothers me when people exclusively judge things based on the modern lens and are unable to make any real attempt to actually view them from the landscape of their own release. Still, keep up the great work!

I think a central part of playing or viewing something from years ago is seeing how well said thing holds up now. Having seen the titles that came out around this same time doing much more exciting things, I honestly can't see where the excitement comes from when a game like Triple Trouble easily trounces this when it comes to controls, visuals, and originality. I appreciate the feedback though, always interesting to hear different perspectives!

Young retro enthusiasts often miss the impact of games and when they dropped. This was the best portable Sonic until Advance even if the levels weren't original. It preserves the feel of Sonic, which is more important than anything other than level design.

I just don't agree with that. If a game controls well, that's awesome. But if it's the same stuff i've already seen, what's the point? I can just play Sonic 2 because it controls really well as well. The one downside is that you couldn't play Sonic 2 anywhere you wanted since you were tethered to the TV and that's the only time where I can see this being a "10/10" game. I get that it was a big deal back then, but again, a central part of my approach to content is seeing how well things hold up, and I don't think there's anything wrong with talking about how things have aged. People do it with Sonic Adventure and Mario 64 all the time and those complaints are totally valid. They're still among my favorites but i'm not gonna say they should be judged as if we were living in their release years and that's it. That'd make for some really stale and repetitive coverage.

Oh yeah, fun fact about that game : a lot of the SNK's developpers who worked on it quit and formed Dimps to work on Sonic Advance, so Sonic Pocket Adventure can technically be considered as part of the Sonic Advance series, you can even already see some of the oh-so-wonderful Dimps' quirks like the abundance of bottomless pit and stupid traps, the bad Special Stages, the incredibly original stages design and Super Sonic being only playable for the final boss. You should've review this one before Sonic Advance 3 to keep the joke alive a little longer.

If anyone is curious about the emulator, it's called NeoPop, and runs neogeo pocket and pocket color games. The reason why frameskip was auto set to 7 is because it's an really old emulator that has been inactive since 2003. It runs fairly well, though some games may have a few glitches as the emulation was never perfected

To answer the question: Green Hill Zone from Sonic Forces. I know it's a weird choice but hear me out. Green Hill is a part of South Island in the manual of Sonic 1, so when the devs at Sonic Team decided to put Green Hill not only on land but NEAR A CITY kinda baffled me. Honestly, I would just call it Lost Valley since it looks like a Grassland/ Dessert hybrid (in Modern Sonic's Stage).

I think I would rename Marble Zone (Sonic 1) to Ruined Temple Zone or something similar, since we see pillars with faces on them, we enter lava-flooded areas inside caves with torches and murals, see a couple of ruins here and there are functional mechanisms there. The same could be said to Labyrinth Zone, but I think Labyrinth works well to describe the area. There is some untapped background to the ruins in Marble Zone.

I like how this game has similar elements to Sonic Advance 1 as well as how you feel about Advance 1 too: 1.) Some of the names are almost the same *Neo* South Island - *Neo* Green Hill *Secret* Plant - *Secret* Base Cosmic *Casino* - *Casino* Paradise (Technically counts) 2.) The game is good until later on 3.) (Just About an) Adventure style in a classic Sonic style gameplay 4.) You don't like the special stages in this just like Advance 1 5.) I read the question of the day and honestly, I can't think of anything off the top of my head except the one zone that actually did get renamed, kinda. Eggmanland from Sonic Unleashed is technically called Crimson Carnival, the same way that every location in Unleashed has a country name and a level name (Apotos - Windmill Isle, Spagonia - Rooftop Run) except even when people use the level names, they still call Crimson Carnival "Eggmanland", which is a shame because Crimson Carnival is a badass name

Secret plant could be toxin plant because secret plant is worse of a name than neo Green hill Cosmic casino can be renamed to pinball night Aquatic relic is a good name Sky chase can be renamed to *H E L L* then aero base is a good name too Gigantic angel, ok who came up with that name it's not even angel island! it can be called Scrap metropolis because it's a combination of scrap brains textures and metropolis gimmicks. also the super sonic final is literally the final part of Sonic 3's super sonic fight...
