the "y5" is actually 255. The number of lives the player has is represented by a single byte (8 bit) variable, which can store up to 256 values, starting from zero and going up to 255. This is also why the highest amount of Rupees you carry in the original Legend of Zelda, and the maximum level for Pokemon in the first two generations, is capped at 255. Though, for Pokemon, you'd have to use glitches or cheats to get them above 100.

Okay, trying to explain the y5 lives thing: So... integer overflow. It sounds all fancy and technical, but if you've seen an odometer wrap around back to 0, that's all it is. If you only have, say, 3 digits, then if your score hits (1)000, it will only be able to display 000. Integer underflow is the same concept, but in reverse. If you try to subtract 1 from 000, it will actually subtract 1 from (1)000 and display 999 instead. So what's happening is that there's a glitch causing you to lose 2 lives at once, making you go from 1 to 255, and since 255 lives is not 0, it doesn't give you a game over. (In binary, (1)00000000 to (0)11111111) However, the game, presumably, only allows you to have 99 lives, so when you have 255 lives, it tries printing a 25 in the tens place and a 5 in the ones place, because it doesn't expect you to have 100+ lives. The 5 works normally, but the 25, well, doesn't. But remember, computers are stupid and take things literally, so it still attempts to find a 25th digit to use. And while I can't figure out what sort of bizarre encoding turns 25 into Y (it can't be alphanumeric, because that would imply 10 lives is A0), it stumbles upon Y as *a* 25th digit, turning 255 into y5
@CiaranMaxwell2 жыл бұрын
why is 10 lives being A0 a problem? 9 is 09, but doesn't attempt to display the 0 because there's only one digit that needs showing. Next up would be 0 in the ones digit, and *something* in the tens digit. Can you go beyond 9 lives in Sonic 2 without glitches? Also, it could be alphanumeric but with letters missing. I can see unused letters (case-sensitive) being removed from the sprite sheet to save space.
@prronce2 жыл бұрын
The real question... is y?
@justineberlein59162 жыл бұрын
@@CiaranMaxwell Okay, more exactly, it's that it needs to keep counting with *something*. For example, you *could* do hex with ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP, but more normally, you just count 0123456789ABCDEEF. So the issue is that while, yes, Y *is* the 25th letter of the alphabet, that would imply that it always uses A for 1, B for 2, C for 3, etc. In other words, I'd expect something like ye lives instead of y5.
@CiaranMaxwell2 жыл бұрын
@@justineberlein5916 It makes perfect sense to me because I'm a programmer. If you don't know how computers convert integers into decimal numbers and how they display those decimal numbers, it makes no sense. Let me try to explain what's happening. Basically, fonts are just sprite sheets. When you want to convert an integer value below 10 into a decimal number to display, you usually add the character '0' (with an integer value of, for example, 56, to make it the 57th entry in the sprite sheet) to the number in question. To display a 7, you would add '0' (56, remember) to 7, resulting in 63. So you display whatever is at slot 63. If the sprite there is a 7, you display 7. However, computers are stupid. They don't know the intent, just what they're told to do. So, if the sprite at slot 63 is a thumbs-up emoji, it will display a thumbs up emoji. (This is how the Wingdings and Webdings fonts work. If you use Wingdings to put a registered trademark symbol after "Kong", spellcheck will say you put down "Kongf" because 'f' in normal fonts and 'registered trademark symbol' in Wingdings are at the same position in the sprite sheet. Yes, I speak from experience.) The lives display code is written to first convert the entire value into decimal. This puts it into three sets of four bits each (X Y Z, where X is hundreds, Y is tens, and Z is ones). It looks at X, glues Y to the back of it, then displays whatever is at the resulting value (XY) in the sprite sheet. Then, it looks at the last set (Z) and displays '0'+whatever. Note that Z has an extra offset applied to it and XY does not. This is important. This isn't supposed to matter because the value can't go above 00001011, which breaks down into 0000 0000 1011 (0 0 9). The first two sets thus can't be anything other than 0000 0000. Thus, the 10s digit location always displays a blank. (We would call it a "space" in a font.) However, thanks to this glitch, it _can_ go above 00001011 (9). Thus, because it doesn't know any better, when the computer looks at 11111111 (255), it breaks down 11111111 into 0010 0101 0101 (2 5 5 in decimal). X is 0010, Y is 0101, Z is 0101. Remember when I mentioned the thumbs-up emoji in my example? The same thing just happened. It wasn't told to display Slot 00000000 followed by Slot Z+'0', it was told to display Slot XY followed by Slot Z+'0'. Because Slot XY is 'y' and Slot Z+'0' is '5', it displays "y5".

So for those who are wondering 'y' is 250, so when you go to "-1 lives" it's 255 lives, this is known as an underflow. Because the code for the game wasn't prepared to handle a negative number it has to jump up to the maximum possible number. In an 8bit system 256 is the maximum possible integer value. Data is determined by 8 digit long strings of binary, meaning there's only 2^8 possible values a variable can hold. This is 256, but you'll often see the values top out at 255 because normally you count from 0-255 for 256 separate values.

Nitpicking 1 year old KZbin comments: The Genesis was a 16-bit system, not an 8-bit system; and it's moot anyway because those "bit" counts are talking about addresses in memory, not the size of bytes for everything else like data. 8-bit systems can store numbers larger than 256 just fine, you just use two bytes and presto, you can store up to 65,535. Or four bytes and up to 4,294,967,295. It's just that the Sonic team thought that one byte was plenty for the lives counter, it wasn't a limitation of being an 8-bit or 16-bit system.

S3&K No Right is probably my favorite video you've done, so it's great to see the same challenge done in the sequel. I can't wait to see you do it in the Threequel: Knuckles the Echidna 1.
@gammalolman5802 жыл бұрын
There are only 3 versions of that game that have knuckles. First is the rom hack... Which isn't feasible since yarr:tm: The second is the mobile port. Theorically possible, especially since I heard that controller support exists, but this isn't a viable strategy due to the third option... ... Sonic origins, which is a direct port of the mobile port. And the video explains how this version of the game patched a very powerful ability of knuckles, that being the ability to change direction when gliding to the left side of the screen.

23:31 that's how I beat the final boss as a kid for the longest time. Later on I fell into short jumping but when I first saw that strategy as a kid it seemed way too risky, and hey, my spindash way worked. That was one of the few things I changed from running the same routes over and over and over. Everyone else is a speedrun champion, but that's how I played. To this day I don't know why I played that way. Maybe the sense of progression gave that dopamine hit over experimentation.
