Desolace, while being ugly as fuck, has a decent amount of quests, lore and one of the most interesting dungeons in WoW Classic. The obvious choice for vanilla is Blasted Lands: Ugly, dogshit quests, annoying mobs, annoying elites - only plus is the Worldboss and the huge mine-complex up north.

vashjir lover here, it's insane that people can't conceptualize that an underwater area is functionally the same as an area where you can fly, only difference is the environment is actually suited for it, the aesthetics and music make it maybe my favourite zone in wow (although I've only played alongside the classic re releases and am no further than cata)

It’s just one of those things you know you’ll find in almost every rpg, and they’re all almost the same, very little is innovative or new about the theme. Like how most RPGs have to have sewer level at some point. They aren’t bad, they’re just par for the course

People hated it because having to be forced to fight underwater the entire time felt awful, because combat in WoW is just not designed well for being underwater (for example, not being able to use any movement speed abilities to escape, or not being able to use any AoE abilities because your circle gets dropped on the ocean floor 300 feet below you). I did Vashj'ir once and that was enough, lol. I went to Hyjal instead after that every time I leveled a new character.

Lorewise the Drakuru quest chain is really good. Gameplay wise the Zul'Drak part is absolutely awful. The vehicle-quests, especially the one quest where you have to kill a bunch of trolls with an abomination that you need to explode, is one of the worst quests in the entire game. And it doesn't stop here. In another quest you have to mindcontrol geists to farm some crystals. You can only do one crystal per geist. It takes so long and easily bugs out which makes it take even longer. The whole quest chain consists of around 10 quests and it takes you over an hour to finish it. And its not even fun because you have to wait so long for cooldowns on your quest-items or abilities of your vehicles.

Yea The Maw was the absolute worst. The place was so saturated with mobs and were spread out across the entire area, plus they were higher health and damage as well, you couldn't just walk anywhere, you had to fight through tougher mobs from point A to point B so nothing was as simple as "go do quest and return to questgiver". On top of that, after you clear a path, you'd think "oh thank God, at least I can just run back since the path is cleared", but then respawns. It was the most dreadful and painful area in WoW that I've ever been. It's modeled to be like Hell, and that is accurate. I actually feel bad for Sylvanas being damned there until all the Teldrassil souls are saved, or whatever she's doing.

I made up a Blizz programmer named "Dan" who I blamed for the Eye of the Jailer mechanic. Soon, every time there was a horrible mechanic or something badly designed in the game, my guildies would start busting on "Dan". "Great programming Dan - thanks a lot a---ole!" "Jeez, musta been Dan!"

They were clearly trying to ripoff a Souls-like game with the level of drudgery and obvious aesthetic. When you died you dropped half of your new stupid currency that you needed for crafted leggos and so would have to run back to your body to loot. Not as a ghost mind you, but alive and potentially run past a bunch of shit that has respawned so there was a chance you'd die again on the way to your first corpse.

I actually enjoyed the Maw initially. Early in the story, it had a really tense dramatic feel--which made sense, because you were in a place nobody was supposed to be. It felt genuinely intimidating with the dense mobs, the things hunting you, and the way you couldn't stay too long because it became progressively more deadly. You only had one ally in one location and the whole place felt unsafe, so you had to be on your toes 100% of the time. And that felt awesome, because it was so easy to get complacent in modern WOW expansions. Even in prior expacs, supposedly forbidden/extremely deadly zones often had friendly npc's or villages or camps you could go to for a rest, but the Maw was almost exclusively you. Buuuut...once it came down to grinding rep for Ve'nari and doing dalies on multiple characters, it started to get old fast. Eventually it just became annoying and lost a lot of its scariness, which was unfortunate.

I liked it on my worgen char at the beginning of the expansion, cuz they were the only ones (with droods) able to mount. But the eye of the jailer was TERRIBLE. It filled too quickly so you couldn't even finish half the quests that were handed to you there, you had to choose between doing the dailies or doing the main quests. Even when you were supposed to get rid of it at the start of 9.1 you couldn't finish the questline in one day because you'd reach the last step of the eye waaaaay before the end, even if you didn't kill any extra mob or rare. It was frustrating. They fixed it several times with patches, but the damage was done. It's now tied to an endless feeling of frustration for me, even though I liked it during the main campaign.

Blasted Lands or Thousand Needles gotta be way worse than Desolace for Vanilla. Blasted Lands has some of the worst quests in Vanilla and Thousand Needles is just a straight line filled with hyenas and centaur until you get to the shimmer flats which has got to be by far the worst area of the map in the games entire history. Desolace may be a barren wasteland but the shimmer flats is literally a flat, white X-axis filled with “Kill 200 mobs and collect 40 pieces of trash” and a quest giver who only wants to send you to the opposite side of the entire world ever other quest. I know people hate water zones but TH going from total garbage to a zone that had its own unique ship mount, a floating barge quest hub, a Tauren race war, and so many pirates it’s not even funny was the best glow up in any zones history.

This is the hill I will die on but for me Grizzly Hills is terrible zone with quest design. The atmosphere and music? 10/10. Sure, its iconic and beautiful. But holy hell there are so many instances where you complete the quests, return to the camp and the quest giver will send you straight back where you come from. Those quests are taking a long time to do and are basically the same. Sure there are exceptions like that one acorn quest but outside of that.....nah. Vanilla- Winterspring; Reason: Farming for Timbermaw Hold and grabbing Firewater along with a mount quest chain exclusive for Alliance. Half the quests start in Everlook and go somewhere else. If you’re alliance, you come here often but Horde players rarely come here. BC-Blade’s Edge; Reason: The entire map was built for flying players to soar through but you have the quest the ENTIRE zone on foot. Don’t get me started on the Rexxar and Gnome stuff. Wrath- Borean; Reason: It’s a decent zone but when you compare it to Howling Fjord…it’s boring. Cata- Uldum; Reason: Half the quest chain was based off Indiana Jones, I get a few gags here and there but copy paste an entire quest chain around a movie and instead of being original like the fact we have a BIG WIND GOD in the SKY that was the equivalent of RAGNAROS…come on Blizzard. Mists- Krasarang Wilds; Reason: I have to agree with this pick but not for his reason. It’s a jungle zone, it’s supposed to feel claustrophobic…that’s the point. My two reasons is the zone was too small, needed to be twice as big. The second is that quests weren’t even engaging, even the Anduin one. Think about it…Jade Forest you created a war that brought an old enemy back into the limelight, Valley of Four Winds you stopped a preemptive invasion with only the local untrained populace while also creating a new form of beer and then you go to Krasarang…what’s the quest chains you do there? Restore a village by making them happy, Find out the hozen overfish, Mogu vs Ally/Horde, and Chicken Sad so Boy King must make him happy….I know that’s simplified but hopefully you get the point. WoD- we could literally say any zone here because half to more than half of content from WoD was cut due to Blizzard wanting to meet deadlines. Legion- we could say any of the Argus zones here…Legion should’ve been a Part 1 and Part 2 xpac. ToS should’ve been the Capstone raid leading to Part 2, with more time those zones could’ve been better than what they were. BFA- Personally Vol’dun, I don’t know why but I never liked the zone and hated questing in that area on Horde. Shadowlands- The Maw. We don’t need a reason, it’s hell. Literally and figuratively. Dragonflight- Zaralek Caverns; Reason: I actually like all Dragonflight zones but my main gripe is the lack of quests in the area that can be done solo, a lot of the stuff in that REQUIRED a group which was annoying. Also the time gates content was a bit much as well.

I like to add to both my Wrath and Classic comments that will disagree with his choice. Zul’drak was an amazing zone, hands down. Finding out trolls are at the point of sacrificing their own gods just to have chance against the Scourge, Argent Dawn and Ebon Blade fighting scourge AND trolls…and don’t forget the continuation with its awesome finale of the Drakuru chain. Desolace; while an ugly zone had its lore, quests and an enormous dungeon that I STILL have a soft spot for because…level design wise that thing must’ve been a pain in the ass to make back in 2002-3.

I personally dislike The Hinterlands in classic a lot more than Desolace because while gloomy it does have some good quests, plus the coastline was great for fishing. Hinterlands on the other hand has: Melee and caster mobs placed in such positions that you cannot aggro one without aggroing another, and there is nothing you can LoS them with. Said mobs all run away pulling additional ones in. Stealthed wolves which also join in when this happens Stealthed wolves all along the roads which dismount you constantly. Stealthed wolves which will aggro on to you from other players pulling them, even though you haven't touched them. Needing a guild who isn't a shower of excrement in order to get the quests there done because so many of them are elite. Annoying variances in creature level on certain quests like Skulk Rock Cleanup where one group of creatures can be green to you and the others red to you despite the fact that they are part of the same quest in the exact same area. Constant, unwanted aggro because everything is placed so close together. The fact that there's, "A" questing hub for each faction and nothing else despite the zones size. Mobs which turn on your PvP mixed in among normal quest mobs.

One thing you missed about Blades Edge Mountains, is that in TBC original there was a bug where if you died in the area in the north west (Raven's Wood), it would spawn you at the closest graveyard, which happens to be Sylvanaar. It's the closest as the crow flies, but to run back to your corpse from there you you had to go all the way around the zone. You ended up running past three other graveyards just to get to your corpse. Infuriating!

I have to agree that Zul'Drak was a real slog to get through tier by tier. I think the lower tiers were the worst...early on in the lower level when you're doing that quest chain for the death knights, I didn't realize you could summon the quest giver to you with the horn they gave you, so I kept (land mount) riding all the hell way back to the NPC at the very farthest part of the zone and it took forever. Zul'Drak was supposed to have a big raid and just didn't. I'm not sure why that was. I think so-called Troll raids were love em or hate em, and people were tired of them.

Any time i watch these ranking vids of WoW zones, I'm reminded that the playerbase does not enjoy 2 things : a dull zone and a zone that you can't faceroll. Antoran Wastes and the Maw are perfectly fine zones for what they represent in the lore. Antoran Wastes is the fortress of the Legion and it is NOT supposed to be an easy to navigate area. It is a punishing place that demands you do everything you can to survive the second you leave the comfort of your tiny foothold in enemy controlled land. Same ith the Maw. I enjoyed it once they actually got it up and running properly and I liked having a zone that you had to legitimately fight to traverse. Some zones are just there to stroll through. Some zones lack content. Some zones are beautiful scenery or have one memorable questline. But to me, I like zones that make you have to use potions and cooldowns and think about which mobs you will pull first instead of letting you just avoid them.
@Wheeljack678
@Wheeljack678 19 күн бұрын
Until they added an extra graveyard, Blade's Edge also had one of WoWs absolute longest cropseruns. If you died in Ravens Wood (I think it was), you had a good 15+ minute run to traverse as the nearest GY was (by air) just below it, but due to the design of the zone, you basically had to run through almost all of it to get to where you died.

Mechagon was implied to be a super-advanced island but a scrapyard when you found it because that was the point. You're led to believe you're getting another Suramar situation, a gorgeous city occupied by an advanced race, only for the game to slap you with a cold serving of reality. Mechagon is a dystopian wasteland literally run into the ground by a xenophobic ruler who believes he can undo all organic life on Azeroth. He has become so racist that he buried his city and sealed the front door. I think, for me at least, what kills Mechagon is the fact that it's underdeveloped past this. We don't really get good reasons to be fighting Troggs aside from "well Gnomes fight Troggs," the bosses all boil down to "gnome sentries and failed experiments," and of course it was just a megadungeon instead of a fully-explored zone, something I think Blizz is looking to learn their lesson with in Undermine. Mind you, it could be worse. Blizz made the Brokers seem cool and mysterious in SL, then Tazavesh was ONLY a dungeon.

My pick for worst Legion zone is probably one that most people even forgot existed. Helheim or whatever Heyla's zone was called. I was alliance on a PVP server when Legion launched and went to Stormheim first, so when I got to the Helheim part of the quest line there were 100 horde players for every 1 alliance player, I died every two steps. One of the reasons why I ended up transferring to a Normal Realm during Legion. I didn't find out until recently that you get to revisit that zone and do dailies when I finally did my Warrior class hall line. I have no desire to go back to that zone ever again.
