Matt, you should add a magnet to the magnet to each remote. If you wired a simple circuit with some lights, you could have a board on the dash showing whether all the remotes are accounted for or not. If all remotes are back in their "home", all the lights are green - if one is not, it would show red and let you know before you leave that you have problems.

@@jamesplymire5342 I guess you don't understand the frustration of finishing a build and things keep breaking.. or you designed something wrong and have to change something major, etc.. It's hard to avoid. So there's a huge difference when you're still grinding through that-- vs when you've done many jobs without a single issue and it just feels unbreakable and ultra reliable and you don't have that little worry in the back of your mind of all the unknowns.. I'm not being a downer, I just understand what stage that thing was in at the time... Which I was totally right, because he went on to break both drive shafts not long after that... and the headers overheated some wires later after that, so he wrapped them... and the brake sensor lost pressure recently, and Jefe almost went barreling down the hill with no brakes. So I'm sure he will find a better, more reliable fix for that too, I'm sure. So call me a downer all you want, but I was 100% correct-- it's still in the teething stages.. But it's getting there. It's a fun rig.

Two suggestions for the remote misplacement -- first, paint them a bright yellow so that they're easier to spot when inevitably they get misplaced. Second, consider 'Air Tag'ing them with some kind of sensor that talks to phones that could give you a warning when the remote is not in range and help with finding the direction of where they are.

She is a polite dog but also REALLY likes to be related to, and around you MATT. You are her favorite for sure. I mean polite when she accepted the treat given to her from the attendant, through Matt at the entry station of the park grounds. That was cute. She also seems to know when it is time to ask for "getting-out-and-running" privileges. I like to see her find the various perches that she will use when riding in a moving vehicle, either in the front, or back or outside on the wrecker. In this show she jumped on the cowl in front of the windshield while still in the garage (near the end of the show). That is one of the few dogs that I would like to have around me most if not all the time.

I did 4x4 winch competition (Europe). We hardwired the “joysticks” used for controlling marine Bow Trusters into the winch control wiring, mounted on the dash for the driver. We also have extra winch control switches next to each winch fairlead for the co-pilot/winch monkey (for spooling in) The original remote controls are also stil usable, but we almost never use them. All the options… We run Warn 12v winches at 24v (switchable) with gigglepin dual Bow motors up front. Red Winch dual motor winch in the back. Warn m8000 in the center as a top winch. Lastly we run a pto driven “God winch” based on a landcruiser 80 series transfercase PTO (cut and reversed to run to the rear), driving a single samurai dif, driving a huge homemade drum with 70meter (210 feet?) dyneema rope. That thing is scary…It accelerates so fast when winching that the co-pilot can not outpace it in the mud, you can get run over.

I gotta say, I really like Eric from BSF's system with that tow bar - The A-Arm lifts up the vehicle and takes the vertical load, then the lower tow bar controls the fore/aft motion. The Razer on this job was kinda all over the place. Upon thinking about it, you could probably fabricate a piece that slides into your hitch receiver, so that you can remove it if it's not required. Something shaped like a T-Bar that has the ability to hinge up/down. Ability to swivel probably wouldn't be bad, either, if you're recovering from a lot of rock crawling situations. Now I"m thinking some kind of large ball-joint type connection, to allow 6-way movement (up/down, left/right, and rotation), while still controlling that fore-aft motion.
@NBSV1

I’ve seen some setups that use basically a couple of yokes and u-joints so it has plenty of movement in all directions except forward and backward. I feel like their setup might need some springs or shocks to allow some front/back movement but still stop it before it hits the wrecker.

Matt, if you want more cheap traction on your big tires, you should sipe tem. It's a process used in winter areas. Basically, slicing the tire to create more edges to grab a slippery surface, ice, and smooth rock. This process does not damage tires, and they often run cooler. A professional tire shop can sipe tires. Good luck on the wrecker.

Noun (pronounced grip-shun) a sticky grip when in contact with slippery surfaces. Usually refers to shoes or something that is meant to be thrown. Ex. "Those shoes have excellent gription on wet floors."; "This ball still has good gription even when it's soaking wet."

I've never driven or used a tow truck before but I think you should use stabilizing slings like the old tow trucks . Like the fat rubber straps that go under the front end of the vehicle being towed. That would keep the towed vehicle from swaying side to side and front to back.

Matt the ORW IS AWSOME! had some doubts about its capabilities, but the two wheel version is beyond belief how strong and agile the beast is. Good luck, but trailmater has experience with off road wreckers, and Paul will break his before he gives up. Can’t wait to see the out come. Great content by the way. 👍🏻

It seems the wrecker would benefit with a tow bar style spreader that can be strapped to what is being towed to keep it from pushing into the back of the wrecker, but it appears to work very, very well otherwise. Really impressive how well it works considering it’s all from Matt’s imagination.

When towing a vehicle it may be advantageous to have something like a 'shock absorber' between the wrecker and the vehicle being towed. This would limit the amount of "swing" back and forth when driving over rough ground.

Great job! Really awesome to see the heavy wrecker out in its home turf doing a recovery very easily. After enough runs like this there might be some envy that sees others like Rory, Paul, Merlin and others build their own larger, custom and incredible 4x4 off road recovery beast rigs. Waiting to see who builds a great diesel version, Powerstroke, Cummins or Duramax. Or maybe Matt will one day toss a diesel engine in the heavy wrecker, didn't he mention doing that around the time he was getting ready to put the engine in?
@entrepreneurlife649
@entrepreneurlife649 Жыл бұрын
He did address the "why not a diesel". I believe the reason is because the diesel makes so much torque that is hard to control. Also, with the immense gear reductions it has, the gasser makes traction the limiting factor.

FYI: The fact that several drive train components broke during shake-down test drives does NOT mean Matt & friends are incompetent vehicle engineers. It happens to all vehicle designers. Chrysler, General Motors, and Ford all take their new cars to their own proving ground and run them until something breaks, even though they all have over 100 years of experience designing vehicles, and thousands of professional engineers. As I type this I am sitting 16 miles from the Chrysler proving ground, which covers 5.25 mi² (13.6 km²). I am sitting 20 miles from the General Motors proving ground, which covers 5.25 mi² (13.6 km²). I am sitting 26 miles from the Ford Proving Ground, which covers 0.5 mi² (1.2 km²). [Ford’s main, large proving ground is 2,000 miles from here.]

Hey Matt, what it looks like would be super cool and helpful would be some sort of a pole/bar of sorts with a shock of some kind to help with the slack when accelerating and stopping. The towed vehicle looked like it could use something to keep it from being joseled around and even hitting the wrecker and causing more damage. Would be cool to see what your genius brain can come up with!!

Maybe get a bumper that goes into the tow hitches on the rear of the wrecker, so the towed vehicle doesn't hit anything important. Or a bar that mounts into the hitch, with holes along its length to strap the vehicle to, to keep it a fixed distance from the wrecker

You should use a technique that rury uses. Besides the cable from the hoist , He uses 2 cables with a cross pattern from the back of the record to the front of the towd vehicle. This prevents the broken vehicle from wallowing around Back-and-forth see -sawing on a single line of the hoist.. Number 2 tip. Spray paint your remote controls a Florescent color so they'll be easier to find when you lay them down on the ground or somebody sees them.
