Hey man, glad you're okay. I can relate to your fear and loneliness lying there waiting to get taken to hospital. I got helicoptered off a mountain in Wicklow last year, three broken neck vertebrae, dissected vertebral artery including nice blood clot that could have caused a stroke, stretched shoulder/arm nerves. Though I was paralysed for the first 30 seconds, then realised I could move my legs. Back biking three months later, and doing madder shit now than ever, with the only lasting injury the blocked artery. But the fear for the first 12 hours until I was told the extent of the injuries was unreal. Same as yourself, I was really lucky I was with a bunch of really experienced lads that looked after me and sorted the emergency services help.

Kudos to all the lads who stepped up, kudos to the emergency services, who as always are amazing, massive kudos to smithy and Brad for talking through what I can only imagine was a traumatic time. So many emotions flow through this video I can't begin to describe. It just goes to show what a family mtb riders have, always there with help and advice and mucking in when times get rough. On another note, I think the podcast type video is really useful, I know how hard you work to get these posted, but it's really nice to see things analysed and put into perspective. As always Ryan, kudos to you for all your efforts.

Wow. What a day! That was a tough watch, especially Smithys cries of pain when they were getting him on the board (brought your bed up the hill for ya didn't I Smithy🤣). I'll admit I feared the worst when Ryan walked down the hill after me and a few others had made it down first and told us. After eventually making it back to the top of the hill I dropped into the same trail again (and so left Brad and the others who didn't) so I could get to where Smithy was. I was so 'kin glad when I saw his legs and arms moving I'll tell you. Couldn't believe what I was hearing when told about Brad's off as well, that was gnarly. Heal up soon pal 💪 The emergency services did a fantastic job and I was proud to be part of the help in the little way I could 👍👊

Wow this was a learning experience vid with being new to riding MTB’s. What a great group of people helping and the emergency services. Pleased you are both well and recovering. This just reminds me to learn small, take my time and not be put under peer pressure with whom hubby and I are riding with; there’s always another day if it doesn’t feel right at that time and I hate being pushed. Thanks for sharing and take care and stay safe all 🙌🏻

Yes it was, very much so. Its a difficult one isn't it as sometimes we need a little push to help progress but if you feel like it's too much be confident enough to say no and don't beat yourself up about it. Watching videos of new places before visiting can help but I think pushing yourself to go faster or tackling features outside of your comfort zone should only happen if you are familiar with the trail. May just be common sense that but worth a mention anyway. Thanks for all the kind words and for leaving a message. The key is to enjoy your days and stay healthy if you've ticked those two boxes you've done enough.😊👍🏽

Different kind of video to the usual smashing it down the trails and hollering. This was really good though. Well done to everyone in staying calm and helping out. It can be really scary when a friend hurts themselves and you're in the middle of nowhere. Some great tips too, if something feels wrong, listen to yourself and sort it, whether it's tyres or just walking for a bit. Downloaded the 3 words app and will get friends too as well. Ryan, just catching up on this one and just at the point of the ‘What Three Words’ and the footage. I’ve got to ask but apart from the obvious helmet and gloves, what kind of protective body armour are you guys using and wearing when descending the Wrekin/Ercall and given the carnage what would you guys recommend?
@TDPB3 жыл бұрын
Hi there and thanks for the question. We are all wearing helmets of a top quality generally a lot of the best helmets have a mips system or something simular whether that be a half lid or full face. All wearing knee pads some also have shin protection. Its a mixed group for elbow pads personal prefrence or just based on confidence levels or ability really. Sometimes people find them restrictive with turning tight corners etc. But I guess you have to weigh things up. When riding some locations they advise to wear elbow pads due to rocky terrain. Most runs at the Wrekin are dirt and plant based runs with a dirt or loam single track in it. It is more challenging going in the dusty summer months compared to autmn. You do find the occasional rocky section generally at the end of sections before fire roads which can be quite steep. Personally I always wear gloves and glasses or goggles my eyes are like fly traps and hands slip with out gloves again personal preference. I also use to wear 661 impact shorts but not for a while. So just going back to ability and confidence I'd recommend people that are new to mountainbiking to start with something less risky for eg Cannock chase follow the monkey. If its that the person knows all the core fundermentals of MTB but is not use to riding steep but wants to develop in that area I'd suggest wearing as much protection as possible potentially full body armour and neck brace as falling off is pretty much inevitable. Ensure they are riding with at least one other person. Download what 3 words and carry a mobile phone. If a person decides to ride alone for what ever reason what 3 words is essential let someone at home know where you are riding that day. If the rider uses premium starva you can set up a live beacon so three of your close friends or family members know where you have gone once you have activated a ride. I believe this will only work through the strava app but not a smart watch that transfer information to strava. Finally a first aid kit and a foil blanket would be of some use especially in the winter months. I could of made this short and simple but I had the time to go into a bit of depth. Appologies if I've taught you to suck eggs in areas but I also considered other people that may be just as curious that may read this. Hope it helps. Stay safe and enjoy riding this autumn winter. Thanks again👍🏽

@@TDPB Thanks for taking the time to reply. I’ve been carrying a first aid kit in both of my backpacks as I’m the very worse rider in my group. This evening I dusted off my elbow, shin and knee pads which I haven’t worn for ages. I would add that along with a fully charged mobile phone, an external fully charged power pack along with a usb charging lead would be a good backup in an emergency. Otherwise this came up on my FB feed which maybe of interest to those of us who shred The Wrekin. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqrYaHmMZ9ajhs0

You don’t know how close you are to a major disaster every time you ride. Broke my left arm in three places going OTB on fire track talking and not paying attention - and I’ve been riding mtb for 14 years. Easily done. Props to Rad for hitting that step up. I was back in the saddle after 3 months but the wrist and elbow pain stayed for easy another 6 months. Head and neck injuries are my biggest fear. So thank God (other religions are available) Smithy got away with it this time. A story to tell the grand kids - let’s keep it that way. 👊🏼
