I also have a 2012 Mac Mini that which I added a 1TB SSD internally. Great machine overall. I purchased a 2020 Macbook Air M1 with 16Gb/512 SSD for streaming video. Its not very good at streaming. Whenever an HDMI cable is plugged into it, the screens text & icons shrink down so small that I need a magnifying glass to read it. Seriously! My wife's old 2014 11" Macbook air with a simple mini-display port is superior to the M1 Air for streaming. I read somewhere that "old" Mac minis make great media servers. I'm going to have to look into it and repurpose my old Mini.

Thanks. I'm about to pull the trigger on the M1 Mini and this careful and detailed comparison with the iMac confirms my choice to go with the Mini. I watched it with a mind open to choosing the iMac instead, but point by point the Mini won out of most comparisons. The iMac is the better value. With a Mac Mini yes you could make it a cheaper overall package but if you wanted the same quality display, Mouse, Keyboard, speakers and Webcam as the iMac 🖥 You will pay more than the iMac 🖥 Also the iMac looks cleaner. Only one cable for the entire thing. You can’t be beat the convince of placing on a desk. Plugging a power cable in. Connecting keyboard and mouse and be ready to set it up.

I bought the M1 Mac mini 512GB with 16GB RAM. I already had an LG 5k 27inch Ultrafine monitor which I had purchased a few months earlier. Works perfectly with the Mac mini. Cost is just under 2k with an apple numeric keyboard and trackpad. My dad needs a new machine and for him I am leaning towards 24inch iMac. The simplicity is what he will appreciate as he's previous machine is a 2011 iMac 27 inch which just packed up. I'd say for basic usage I would go for an iMac but for anything heavier or if your upgrading the spec, the Mac mini is the way to go. A 4k monitor should cost around £400. Or wait for the larger / high spec iMacs if you can.

@@kosteaproduction Thanks. Useful to know, and glad you're glitch-free. I'm sure the glitches don't affect everyone, but the reports were too widespread to ignore. Possibly fixed in software updates, but the issues seem to have dogged the Mac Mini all the way back to its origins.

The Mac mini doesn't use Bluetooth, it uses Bluetooth Low Energy. If you use a mouse that doesn't work with Low Energy, it will reboot from time to time, seeing the low power as a loss of signal. The Logitech web page clearly shows Low Energy compatibility. My Logitech MX Master 2X has no problems, but my previous mouse barely functioned.

That 4.5K display is awfully tempting. The camera and mic seem great but there's a lot of echo in your room. Hang some drapes. I've never had an iMac, though my stepdaughter had the charming G4 iMac. I wanna purple one! I'm getting a mini because I still have a perfectly adequate display, keyboard and mouse from previous systems. Extra monitors or larger displays? Phooey! I've been using this 13" MacBook Pro for seven years and it's been fine. I don't need a big Logitech 'handful' mouse. Mine's a relatively flat Macally model. The mini is clearly the low-cost entry to Apple Silicon. I'll spring for the 10G Ethernet because I can. New, faster chips are due out and it will be easy to swap for a faster model --later.

If I knew that the Mac Mini would play nice with a monitor, as is great looking fonts when scaling, I would say the Mini is the way. I bought the iMac, which is good, but the keyboard is so-so, with a Logitech Solar Apple keyboard being way better. The same goes with Magic Mouse, which in use feels terrible compared to a Logitec M510 mouse, and when scrolling the browser window tends to wiggle as times with the not so Magical Mouse. The speakers are OK, but not great bass for music. All in all, everything considered, once I add a M510 mouse, I would say the iMac base model I would rate a good 8 out of 10. I have the silver, bought at Costco, so there is less color to distract and the bezels fit better with the look. I will use the Magic Mouse with the iPad, which I don't use all that much. Never found too much of a use for a tablet, other than to show my photos to people. The $1249 price of the iMac 24" is fair enough, though I might be adding a Logitech keyboard unless I get used to the Apple one -- it might work out over time -- giving it a go. Apple, for the price, could very well have added four type A USB ports, kept the second fan in the base model, and added an extra bass internal or external. Love to see this stripped-down model as a $1,099 iMac without keyboard and mouse with black bezels, and space gray chin. And an Apple logo on the front. Maybe a choice of Apple Logo colors ;)

I went from a 27" i7 4ghz, 32gb RAM iMac to: An M1 Mini with16gb RAM and a TB storage. I have the magic keyboard and mouse from the iMac, and I just needed a monitor. So, I found an LG Ultrafine 32" 4k monitor, and with Applecare, it came in under €2,000. The same speced 24" iMac would've cost me over €2,500. The 32" real estate is great. Just what I need for Logic Pro. Oh, yeah, I have a SanDisk external SSD like the one in the vid, and I had to buy a powered hub. I would've needed those in the first place, and besides, I still need to plug things directly into the USB A ports, like the SuperDrive, for example. So, fwiw, for my needs, I would recommend my rig. YMMV, lol. I would've preferred a new iMac. The one I described above cost me €3,300, late 2015. But €2,500+ for a 24" monitor and 16gb RAM and 1 TB storage is not worth it to me. And I don't feel like waiting until the next gen iMacs are released only to find they are out of my budget for what I want.

IMACs can't adjust the monitor height (other than sticking a book under it) and, ergonomically... that's a fail. 24" is just a bit too small for serious graphics work, that white bezels (ugh) and reflective displays are a pain. Moreover, I don't want to pay for Apple's stinky keyboard and mouse... no thank you. I wish a manufacturer would make a 4-5K monitor with decent speakers and a good built-in webcam... something which would give Mac Mini users some of the same 'all in one' feeling.

Being the end of 2022, I'd go for the minimum 8 ram, 256 storage. The M1 will very soon be replaced by the M2 and, almost for sure, in a couple more years, by the M3 and M4. When that new tech becomes so good you can't say no, then sell your M1 and use that saved money for one of those new machines. In other words, don't think of your computer purchase as an "investment." Like it or not, it's a lease.

imac is just too expensive. YOu get high quality monitor which is worth a lot, but it is really overkill for me. And while my Asus monitor is only 1080p, it is 144hz which is something the iMac doesn't have. I've just never come close to paying ~$700 for a monitor. Also if you add another 8gb of ram to the iMac you are at $1700 before tax. That is a lot. And your storage is still only 256gb. And I feel like I would have to go up to 16gb RAM because of that nice monitor. I wouldn't want to swap that whole thing out because of low ram in 3-4 years. Contrast that to the Mini where 8gb is fine because it is only $600ish and would be easy to swap out with a bigger audience to sell into, much more less depreciation and lower ebay fees and lower shipping... Meanwhile every time you resold an iMac you would be paying depreciation/fees/shipping/insurance on a perfectly good monitor. And $200 for an extra 8gb ram sure feels more expensive on a $600ish Mini. Rather save the $200 for the next upgrade and upgrade sooner. I did do the iMac game in the past and I liked it, but I went back to a gaming pc + Mini as the way to go compared to just an iMac. Not that one can't have both. But that's pretty expensive and too redundant for me. Even now I feel like I could just use an iPad as my Mac. Not quite there yet, but close.
