Ok Linus, I gotta disagree with you heavily on the iMacs external power brick. I work in a repair shop and have to fix iMacs fairly regularly. The most common failures on iMacs are the old HDD’s, the GPU’s that older units run, and their power supplies. In previous videos I have watched you disassemble iMacs, and you have noted how the high voltage AC capacitors are dangerous. (I have been shocked by them before, it’s not fun) to access the PSU on iMacs you also need to remove the display, which can easily be broken as it is glass, and on some models you have to buy tape kits to put the thing back together properly! By moving the power supply outside of the iMac, it only benefits right to repair. By making the PSU an external unit, it is easily user replaceable, doesn’t require you to remove the delicate glass displays, and means you won’t have to go near those scary high voltage capacitors. If anything I think the external power brick is not something to scoff at, as it copy’s the status quo of other Windows All-In-One’s by having an external brick, but it also makes the device more user serviceable, and is better for right to repair! Otherwise, great video!!

also: the heat from the power brick doesn't affect the internals of the iMac. One of the reasons why laptops don't have built-in power bricks (apart form the additional weight/size)

My sister just bought one. Yeah, she could've got a M1 Mac mini, then shopped around for a screen, a keyboard, mouse, and some decent speakers... but she didn't want to do all of that. LITERALLY, one cable to plug the thing in, and started using the machine. The convenience of an all in one is something to factor in as well.

@@ceddiexd it is not impossible, but not exactly convenient or intuitive. the trackpad is fine if you have very limited space. still, using mouse and kb is naturally faster. previous page? one click, no mouse movement needed. instead of moving your hand to the trackpad and doing gestures first (also trackpads are not exactly a mac-only thing). coding is not something average users do. and you need homebrew for stuff a linux system can do out of the box. so if you install 3rd party stuff to get linux functionality anyway .. you could go with wsl with windows just as well.

@@ceddiexd its just as natural to move the hand on a mouse as it is to move the finger on a trackpad. it is not a touchscreen. you can just as easily switch to a page in the documentation on windows as on mac. macs were used in the creative industry a lot, but for coding there shouldn't be a lot more than for other OS. And tons of nonprofessionals buy them for their "asthetic" (the uniform, boring, bland look theyve had for years) and because theyre supposedly so easy to use. yeah, wsl is not a point for windows - thats the whole point. just as homebrew isnt one for mac.

The way parallel processing generally works, with diminishing returns the more cores are used, I think it makes sense that you have a less than 12.5% performance drop when going from 8 GPU cores to 7 GPU cores.

I think the redesign was a good call. 100% of people I know with the 21.5" iMac bought it between 2007 and 2011 and haven't cared to upgrade it since. It's a fantastic family machine for some iMovie, web, and photo organization and people who buy these aren't into tech enough to care. So they just never upgraded them.

I have the 16GB RAM M1 Mac Mini, and I've been very impressed by Dolphin's Wii/GameCube performance... between that, Redream and OpenEmu I'm running games in high resolutions (in some cases with 4K texture packs) without the fans even starting up. It's surpassed my expectations. And Steam is getting much better too... I'm running the Batman Arkham Trilogy in 4K without any performance issues, along with games such as Planet Coaster and Two Point Hospital. To say the M1 isn't good for gaming, is 100% Intel's sour grapes. But I do agree, the Mac Mini is a far far better buy than the iMac... not only is it cheaper, but with the money you save you can get a 32" UHD monitor and a thunderbolt dock for additional storage and USB ports... and it was STILL cheaper than the 24" All In One after all the accessories.

@@Gilmore304 I got a Samsung personally. Their 28/32” UHD displays are decent price and they are dual HDMI input so can be used for Mac and TV if you wish to.

@R yeah it’s perfect for work, editing and mid range gaming. I’m a trainee teacher so more than good enough for office, teams, cloud etc. but then as I say all the gaming examples above also. And saves you $100’s in the process compared to an iMac.

@@ben-tendoI’m actually very curious about the comparison between buying the iMac and Mac Mini with external peripherals (displays, webcams, speakers, etc.). From what I observed, in order to get a display that comes close to the iMacs display quality, it costs so much! Not to mention, webcam with centre stage, great speakers, along with mouse and keyboard is already included in the purchase price. To me, it just doesn’t really make sense to buy all these stuff separately cause it adds up quickly and it doesn’t look as cohesive as having everything in a same design language and works seamlessly. Don’t get me wrong, mac minis are great with much better thermals and I/O, its just… AN AFFORDABLE GLOSSY BRIGHT SHARP DISPLAY IS SO DIFFICULT TO FIND 😭😭

I've been wanting a Mac Mini for quite some time, actually. I'm a Windows machine user, but I am curious about the Mac ecosystem, and it's good to get experience with other OSes just to say you know how to use them. Considering the generally rave reviews for the M1, I'll probably end up picking one up in future, when chip prices stabilize a bit. Maybe the next generation? Not an entry level model though. Like with this iMac, Apple has put some limitations on the lowest end Mac Mini that makes it a bit less palatable.

@@neobynature921 The speakers, not the iMac. They meant the speakers aren't as much of an ear-soar as you would expect, especially in comparison to other AIOs. I imagine they're fine if you had to resort to use them. As always, it's better to have a separate audio solution at least in an upgrade path if you care any.

I think the extra core in the 8-core model puts out just the right amount of heat to saturate the thermal control system and throttle it. Whereas the 7-core model reduces the throttling and allows the 7 cores to run faster. Thus the slight discrepancy in benchmarks.

In my case, I am having an issue with my display going black due to static electricity and it is driving me up the wall. I will be replacing it with an iMac to make that problem go away while also getting a nice aesthetic and internal upgrade (I opted for more RAM and storage in the iMac).

I am on the same boat. I am deciding between a Mac Mini+monitor VS Imac. Comparing the 16GB, 512GB version of both, the Mac Mini goes for $1327 with the same acessories of the Imac (Mac Mini $1099 + magic mouse $79 + magic keyboard touch ID $149), the Imac goes for $1899 (with magic mouse and magic keyboard touch ID). The difference is $572. I searched a lot and I couldn't find a monitor at the same level as the Imac's monitor for that price. The Dell U2720Q UltraSharp 4K for example is $600. And the Imac has a camera and good speakers that I would have to buy separately. I wanted the Mac Mini+monitor because I don't like those happy colors of the Imac, but it seems to me they are a better deal. If anyone here have a recomendation of a Monitor as good as Imac´s for under $600, let me know

I vacillated between the 24" iMac M1 8/8 and the Mac Mini. Two things drove me to buy the iMac; finding a display I could afford that would rival the 4.5K Retina display and the lack of cable clutter inherent with the mini. As far as ports go I added the color matching Minisopuru USB hub (external NVMe SSD, 2 USB A, 2 USB 3.2 A/C & TF & SD card slots)

I bought the Mac MIni (edu pricing and upped to 16 GB), but I the price comparison isn't fair. The Imac comes with a high end display and stand, apple keyboard, and magic mouse. I don't think of myself as a mac faithful, but I'm hooked on those input devices. They are really nice. JMO display/stand is +500, keyboard and mouse is +180. And now go get as nice a camera and speakers. It's also aesthetically nice enough set up that it would go well in a living room or fancy kitchen area. So the price difference really isn't big.

The last Mac I bought was a i7 Mac Mini in 2012, I switched to Linux full time in 2014 and really haven't thought seriously about buying another Mac since. I am somewhat intrigued by Apple Silicon, but not enough to buy an M1. As most long-time Apple users know, you shouldn't buy any first generation Apple product because the one that follows it is almost always better. That said, unless the M1.5, M2 or whatever Apple calls it is exponentially better, what's the point? I'm happy with Linux and I like the price/performance metrics that it includes.

The thing is that the ram and storage limitations of the lower tier iMac already make it a no go for anyone that would take advantage of the better cooling. Apple knows this and decided to not waste money on fans that won’t ever be used. I do agree that they could have at least put a disclaimer at the bottom of the spec page. @@JRC_ even if you don't, for your casual users that doesn't really care as long as it's good enough, a 24 inch 1080p monitor from LG is $120, a basic logitech m&k (mk120) is $20, and a webcam is around $30. Add a $30 headset for audio and you are looking at total of $200 for all of the above.

Could a similar approach be made with GPU’s as Apple’s approach with apple silicon/ M1? For example, I understand that apple was not happy with anything intel was putting out so they invested in their own silicon and engineered their own chips. Could Sony or Microsoft take the same approach with GPU’s; end things with AMD and manufacture their own graphics cards for consoles?

If I were buying a Mac I would go definitely go for the Mac Mini not only because of price but the freedom choosing a monitor and keyboard, especially the ergonomics on the keyboard matter a lot to me. A modularised computer also means that if one part module, say the screen is damaged, I can easily replace without having to lose the whole computer 🖥.

When no new Macs were announced at WWDC, I ordered a Mac mini, so I followed your recommendation before watching the video. I watched the whole thing anyway. I really wanted more ports. I have a Logitech wireless mouse adapter, a Wacom tablet, and three USB drives plugged into my 2014 iMac.

considering u have to buy good speakers, keyboard (without touch id), mouse/trackpad and a 24 inch Retina display (additional 700 dollars cause the only 24 retina monitor is the lg ultra fine which apple advertised on their official website) when u decide to buy a Mac mini, the iMac seems to be less expensive🤔

I have missed another point you all made on other videos: the cheaper imac have less fans and roughly the same performance but the lesser fans could result on better long term reliability due to less dust and moving parts on the inside like you guys said on the mb air video. I feel like most people buying this machine, doesnt need ethernet tho it also doesnt include the keyboard with touch id.

I've gamed on my 2014 imac for years before getting a PC again, and I was playing stuff like Overwatch at a solid 60fps at 2k. The trick is you gotta use bootcamp for gaming. If you play fortnite on iOS it'll play like crap, but if you run bootcamp and then play on windows, it runs great.

nearly bought the M1 mac mini or M1 MBA or M1 MBP, but would like to be able to run external PCIe enclosure for BMD Decklink card (i've been impressed enough with M1 integrated graphics not to want an eGPU any more). But then the 24" would look nice next to my 27" DELL 4K and it has nice sound apparently, *but I made it to the end and will now buy a Mac mini* with minimal RAM and SSD to tide me over until Apple releases some new silicon in a Mini or MBP. I've given up waiting for that to happen this year. A 3x PCIe slot mini tower with next gen AS is my ultimate hope, though with Apple premium pricing going to the dark side (Linux & Windows tower with AMD & NVIDIA chips) is becoming tempting for the first time since using a 512K Macintosh to draw bitmap graphics.

I also have a Mac mini! It is the previous version, do not know if it will run Big Sur yet, but I only use it for some craft software that is only on the Mac, and word processing with longer documents. Why, because Word on PC has a feature of losing pictures and tables and entire documents. Friend who used to be a VP at Microsoft says they know this issue, but it is so built into the software, that they cannot fix it. Unless they make a whole new program.

Gotta say, while I guess I agree that the equivalent M1 Mac Mini is a better deal for us more techie types. The whole new iMac package with color-matched iMac, KB, Mouse and the power adapter with Ethernet and the very nice “4.5k” screen is a hard package to beat. My mom would definitely want this and not mis-matched components. Heck, I even kind of want a yellow one. 😁 And I have no use for this in my daily work and play flow.

Soooo Linus, help me out here. How would you spec out a setup with a Mac mini without significantly compromising at the display and sound? I can’t find a decent 4K and soundbar while still ending up significantly below the iMacs price. And there simply is no other way to get Touch ID to the Mac mini. Yeah, you can have a MacOS setup for cheaper than the iMac. But let’s not pretend that it actually delivers the same in all aspects.

It is easy to recomend the mini and say "bring your own devices"... you should say... buy the Mini, buy the apple keyboard and trackpad, and XYZ screen (with the same quality) for xxxx$... Another thing nobody mentions is that this thing (as almost every other imac, except the first ones if I stand corrected) does NOT ALLOW hdmi IN... so if you live in a dorm or a tight spaced room, if you are looking to hook a PS5 into this to (re)use the screen... it does not work. Go with the mini+Screen.

Well, it's a year later, and I'm still waiting on my 32-in iMac Pro in dark brushed aluminum with 5K touch screen and the 0° hinge, the Mac equivalent of the surface Studio. one thing I have to give them is that it certainly does look like a piece of your interior more than ever. The white bezels are cool with blending in with your white wall but that also raises the question why they made the thickness such a big deal. If it should blend in then why is there a big notch on the bottom? Instead just make it thicker and it will be less noticeable just like the thickness of the machine is not noticeable while sitting behind it in the first place

I would say the Mac mini combined with a $300 4K 27 inch monitor would offer a better experience. You could also get the magic trackpad and any keyboard you like . The total would still be around $300 less than the iMac. I also have a base M1 Mac mini that I have paired with a 22 inch 1080p monitor that I already had and it’s a really good value for the money
