Another neat trick for heating is your torch flame with no oxygen get the part sooty then as you heat the soot will burn off and you know your hot enough
@johnkomosa4089 Жыл бұрын
Good job, I would bend on a radiused pc of oak, also have the crescent wrench in your hand opposite of the torch and bend it while the flame is applied, the force you apply, it will bend when ready, though your char test tells you when to get the crescent in your hand, keep the flame on the metal as you bend on a wood radius. When your remove the flame your temp drops rapidly and you tear the steel instead of mall it over the aluminum molecules stay intact and stretch when heat is applied till the end of the "stretch bend". Thank you, cool video. John.

Aluminium will work harden, making it even more brittle. Sometime just heating and quenching it quickly (opposite to ferrous metals) will anneal it enough to allow it to bend easily.

I've had a lot of success by bending aluminum plate in a vice by accompanying the piece with a socket, such as a 1/2" or9/16" socket. Thisproduces agood uniform minimum radius, rather than an abrupt bend which wants to fracture the aluminum. I've done this bend cold many times with 100% success.

The type and condition of the aluminum alloy will have more to do with bending capabilities than pretty much anything else... stay away from 6061,7075, basically they are already in a condition generally speaking too which they won't readily bend without a large IC radius if at all, however 5052 or some of the other lower condition alloys we bend in house with near a zero IC radius and quite often well past 90° all the way to a 180° planished bend creating a rolled double thickness edge.. The condition and alloy are key.

This is a great video!! I found an aluminium bar that i was going to use as sliced dowel pins, but now i need to figure out how to bend it to a 8.84 in radius. I don't have a blowtorch... Could i use a hest gun to soften the bar at it's bend point?

Bending that piece of alluminium with that adjustable wrench is not the right way to bend it - you're not applying equal pressure across the surface being bent. I'd bet the side you bent from is now lower than the side you didn't and it's all now slightly twisted. You could also do with a curved radius to bend the metal over so that the bend comes out uniformly.

All aluminum is not the same. Without knowing what you are doing, you have come up with a solution that works for you, but anyone trying to learn something from this will be lacking any real information. It looks like you are trying to bend 6061-T6, which will bend but only with large radius. If you bend it too short, you just proved that it cracks and often fails catastrophically. Try using 5052-H32 for bending aluminum. Minimum bend radius for ¼" could be as low as .09 (without temper removing heat) but you won't get anywhere close to that with an adjustable open end (aka "crescent") wrench. If you examine your bends, I'll wager you have tiny cracks throughout, which are failure points waiting to fail when you put two lights on or when the camera starts to wiggle around. Good luck to you. You need it.

@grunt8242 жыл бұрын
The wrong way is against the grain. It will crack every time, unless your radius is large enough. You are suppose to bend with the grain. Heating up Aluminum will take away the heat treatment. If you have a very sharp bend you can use 0 type material and get it heat treated. What he is showing is ok for home use not per say aircraft.

Acetylene + pure oxygen burns at close to 3000 C. Butane/propane + air burns at about 2000 C. The melting temperature of aluminium is a bit above 600 C if I remember correctly. I reckon you can even melt the aluminium with a plumber's torch if you're not careful.
