Wray, for a split second I did't believe you when you said you would shrink the bump flat. Very impressive skill and clearly demonstrates how great the aluminium is to work with.

Wray, I love your work, and wish I had the time and patience to learn it as well. On the bright side, this gives me enough help to finish removing the dents I put in my gutter with a box truck. Not going to be great, but I don’t want people to look and ask what happened!

Oscar and I welder aluminum you beat a golf ball bulge in both our panels we were to hammer and dolly back into shape with no heat .. didn't take long .we were able to bring back flat .amazing how the metal can be shaped ..

Hey Wray, what do you think about forming thicker aluminum, like 3/16? I need to make a custom intake manifold (straight-4) and thinking hammer forming into a shape could make a good looking intake .

Wray, thank you for this example! It was very interesting! But, let me ask one question... Tell me please, what we must do if we decide to remove any stretching in this area. I mean: wheeling is way to make smoothly any area. But it starching tool. Always. May be we must repeat hammering and wheeling several times? But, again, next turn will give us more wide area to shrink. It will be more and mo harder to locate area to shrink. Please, tell me how I must solve this problem?

I am a repairman in Brazil, in the event of a collision repair, the aluminum sheet will stretch like that, using this method to shrink and use a sander to finish the piece, because there is no way to use the English wheel, it will have the same It is made? Thank you.

Wray used the torch but didnt give us a reason why or how hot the material needs to be. What if we dont have an acetylene torch.
@daos33004 жыл бұрын
in that case use mapp gas. it's a very slight heating, you're not trying to melt the metal. you have to go by feel.

Great video Stay , I was surprised how much the metal stretched without tearing. How would you have gone about getting it back to flat from the stage you got it to before you cut it on the bandsaw ? I have been looking for a video on how to remove distortion like that from a TIG welded flat aluminium panel with a repair patch welded in which has created oil canning type effect but the metal is all equal thickness, so stressed rather than stretched I think ? Thanks for all the fantastic videos 👍 Mick, UK
@life_of_riley882 жыл бұрын
Maybe you have figured out a solution by now, but if not, oil canning can be hard to fix, as only certain parts of the panel will have stretched, while other areas will have shrunk from the heat. If you can identify the stretched parts, they can be heated and shrunk back down with a cold, soaking wet towel. It's a delicate process, and doesn't always come out perfect. Avoid the temptation to slap at the panel with a hammer, as that will only exacerbate the thinner, stretched areas. Hope it helps 👍

That's basically why I'm here, too. Those 3D surfaces are kicking my butt. I need a larger lead shot backer, I'll probably make my own...the one he uses looks about a square yard, so he probably paid in the 300-500 dollar range just for that. Fortunately its more technique and experience than the tools I have on hand.
@robertironside31663 жыл бұрын
@@mr.curviac8277 Ya there's got to be a way of sending the aluminum througha curved roller set up to get the long curved sections but the joiner section between the wider curved pieces must act similar to an S cleat or C Cleat you make for Duct work on furnace work in forced air plenum building to join sections of duct work together only these would be narrower at least in the spot between the panels?

let me tell you how to tell when alu is annealed, ready to work as in tube and other bending. get the acetylene on, no oxy, get the area black then heat it over the area with oxy on , until the black is gone, then quickly dunk in water or hose it, then it is annealed, you can then bend 2 inch 1/8th wall in a normal pipe bender
