In this video we're checking out to The Wurzels. We love a good funny song now and then, and parodies are usually a great time. We're eager to hear this one, based on George Baker's classic 'Una Paloma Blanca'. Enjoy!

Tony Blackburn, who's already been mentioned, is one of the true radio legends. One of the original Radio Caroline pirates, and also the first DJ on BBC Radio 1, who opened the first ever show with The Move's Flowers in the rain ( I'm not sure if you know the song ) All of the kids in my school during the mid 70s knew all of the Wurzels songs by heart. They still make me smile now. Now then, you need to hear them do, I got a brand new combine harvester 😊

I’m gonna write this before I press play cos I’m very very familiar with it having heard it when it was in the charts AND having seen them at a local cider festival about 8 or so years ago - it’s Soooooooo phookin awful it’s tipped over the edge into being bloody fantastic and can’t fail to make most smile ( 🦉 ) .. well mostly 😀… hearing it once in a blue moon is fine .. hearing it more than that would get right on yer Bristols though 😉 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The one you are watching is a re-recording of the wurzels 1976 hit because it features bbc radio dj Tony Blackburn who in fact recorded a northern soul single himself called I’ll do anything she wants to under the name Lenny gamble

In the 70s, Top of the Pops was a national institution, and a showcase for new groups. The public always wanted to see spoof/comedic records on there, and would go out and buy them. TOTP was really about fun rather than the more serious music. But the majority loved it.

This was a re-make of the Wurzels' own 70s hit, so I suppose it's a parody of a parody. Frank Sidebottom did some interesting 'versions' of well-known hits, including the Sex Pistols' Anarchy In The UK, Panic by The Smiths, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody and Mungo Jerry's In The Summertime. I haven't come across any KZbin reactions to Frank yet, so someone has to take the plunge...

Their stock-in-trade were parodies, in this one they had a guest vocalist in Tony Blackburn who was a very well known British DJ from the '60s onwards, he even released a few records of his own over the years. All of 'The Wurzels' hits were fun like this one.

Whilst the Wurzels are best known for their parodies, they started off as a serious folk group and their early songs, written by lead singer Adge Cutler, were often quite poignant - certainly not parodies. Sadly, Adge died in a car crash and the band then took a different, more commercial direction. Still fun but I miss the original line-up.

I think the username was probably self deprecating and a dig at his own tastes. Wurzels have done a lot of good music but this seems like a charity song or something, in my experience the Greatest hits cd comes out at 9pm after an all day summer barbeque where everyone is wasted and proceeds to dance around the garden like fools till late, to be followed by some Chas & Dave + a medley of Madness

if you want to do non-English language hits which were also big hits in Australia, you should try Falco's Der Kommissar, Plastic Bertrand's Ça Plane Pour Moi or Globos' Tinkabella Di Luna. After The Fire covered the Falco hit, but I have always liked Falco's original a lot more. You can also try Gloria by Umberto Tozzi. The song was covered and made big by Laura Branigan. Both versions were big hits in Australia. Just sayin'... I don't want to comment on this song. The name of the person that requested the song says it all.

@@nedeast6845 Add a few Rolf Harris and Frank Ifield records to your knowledge of Australian music and be on your way. As the lady said in the introduction, maybe you should expand your mind. There's more to music than novelty records. I'm a yokel from the midlands, but I can name some Australian bands from on top of my head. The obvious would be INXS, but I do remember liking The Sports, The Seekers, The Saints, Radio Birdman, The Church, Nick Cave, Crowded House, Silverchair, Easybeats, and Men At Work. There are many more but that will come to me later. My son has also introduced me to some great new acts from the land down under in recent years. No need to put the lady down by proudly displaying your ignorance.
