This plane is considered by some specialists as the ancestor of Space Shuttles. It is said that data collected during flights was used to design the Orbiters.

It’s crazy when you realize these aircraft were designed with a pencil, paper, and a slide ruler. Computers weren’t there yet, so it was all done by hand and brain power…

This B-52 that launched the X-15 is parked at Beale Air Force near Marysville in northern California. Many mission marks on this airframe.

There are two B-52s that launched the X-15. One of them is currently on display at the North Base entrance to Edwards AFB (where the X-15 missions originated from), and the other is at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona.

This plane's maximum speed is Mach 6.75.

Not really,that's just a little more than they had fuel for. With a better coating and without that stupid dummy engine,The X-15 Diary stated that North American thought this bird could go faster than mach 7. Wasn't any real structural damage,or even operational damage done to it at mach 6.7. If you haven't read it,The X-15 Diary is an awesome book,with some really cool photos.
