I believe as artists you can't always be pleasing people if they think your style of singing was not up their alley or was not something they should be doing, even if they are teenagers, they deserve artistic freedom because what Louis said was based on his preference of songs for them, what he thinks they should do and who he thinks they should be, and that is very subjective because clearly the other judges absolutely loved it. If they weren't good then everyone else would think so too, so it clearly comes down to preference and one can't do much about another person's preference of what your sound should be like. Whether the artist is big or small, you can't please everyone. Yes they could have been a little more diplomatic in the way they said it but then again they are kids and i don't think many teenagers understand enough to put a filter on before talking. Despite that, I get where they were coming from and don't hold it against them.

Simon had to bring him in a last ditch attempt to save his dying show...also...
