Props for calling BS on people wrongly labeling games Metroidvanias on your RPG series. You didn't have to do it but you did anyway and for that you have my appreciation.

The people who throw a metroidvania label on everything including Faxanadu that also use the Soulslike label when it should in fact be Virtual Hydlide-like give me tchaikovsky syndrome.

my theory on the center issue is that perhaps it was in the center in japanese. when they translated it to english, they forgot to adjust the location. i imagine the japanese rom would be perfectly in the center for its japanese text. english is a slightly different width to same the say amount of thing (usually more width for the same sentence).
@JasonGravesPoser3 ай бұрын
That's probably a better center theory

A jank childhood classic. Not sure why but I've always found this game strangely compelling. You're right about it being a nice, short experience. I still think about it from time to time though, but I'm just weird like that.
@kageris63 ай бұрын
Same here. Just one of those old childhood memories that comes up from time to time. I know at least part of it stood out cuz the wolf/panther mech character dies near the end. Not alot of games did something like that.

Yo! My friend and I LOVED Xardion back in the day. It was the closest thing we'd seen to a Voltron game, so we'd use Panthera as much as possible even though he sucked.
@hanchiman2 ай бұрын
I realized the bleak storyline of Xardion was assisted from Gainax as well, since Gainax used to be infamous with morbid downer endings

My guess is that there isn't any center-aligned option, because it would take up too much space in the code. They're probably placing the text by hand every single time.
@EdmondDantes2243 ай бұрын
Yeah its kinda silly that he assumes that text placement in a SNES game would work exactly like in a modern paint program.

I thought I was gonna hate this game. Hell, I owned it. Never played it and thought I hated this game. Little did I know, I loved this game. I ended up playing it later after years of never touching it. Actually kicks ass.
@wknight81112 ай бұрын
I'm with you, I had Xardion as a kid and I generally enjoyed playing it. The controls were stiff and the robot switching gimmick sucked because none of the robots excelled at anything. What happened is you used that first robot until you died, and then you were stuck with the other two until you couldn't progress anymore because you couldn't shoot upwards. It wasn't a game that was so bad you hated playing it, it was like there were good ideas all over the place that just didn't get implemented correctly.

I saw a review for this game ~30 years ago, and then proceeded to name my new dog after it. He ended up getting along really well with my cat Yoshi, but of course Yoshi wasn't named after the Mario dinosaur, but instead Hamato Yoshi (aka Splinter from TMNT). Yep, 12 year old me, naming my dog after a robot, and he made best friends with my cat named after a giant mutant rat man... carried his frozen corpse around all winter until the parents forced me to bury the remains. 12 year olds are so weird.

I remember renting this from blockbuster or warehouse and was pleasantly surprised. I was often disappointed by shovelware titles. The pretty easy difficulty and cool graphics made this a perfect rental. It also had a nice write up in nintendo power to hype me up. Metal storm was too hard to beat in a rental.

Ah, _Xardion._ The game I picked at complete random to Let's Play back in 2011 because the name sounded interesting. I stopped after three parts, not realizing the galaxy map could be *interacted with,* then I played it through to the very GAINAX ending. It was worth playing, but nah. Not an RPG. Not "open-world". It's a standard-ass (and very slow) action platform with shootie gun 'bots.

Doesn't the SNES/Super Famicom use tile and sprite based graphics? It looks like Xardion's developer used a tile per letter for the text rather than a text box object. I don't think a text box object is even possible on the system.

This text misalignment explanation is outright wrong and convoluted. They just chose a position that was incorrect. No calculation, no "align middle", just chose the wrong x position. Normally this happens because in localization they didn't adjust the position for the new string, but in this case it's just positioned incorrectly.
