Pretty dang close on the jetting? Your running a 40 pilot when stock calls for 50. That is a 20% difference. That is not close. The only reason it runs slightly better on the bottom end is because you leaned your premix to 40:1 allowing more fuel to get through the jets, but you now have less lube in the gas for that massive piston and bearings .That is a bad idea. You will cook that motor. This bike was probably set up for higher altitudes. Put stock size jets back in it, go with 32:1, 3rd clip on the needle. and ultrasonically clean your carb.

@briankennedy55785 жыл бұрын
I'll give you a bit of advice. Take it or leave it . You'd be wise to take it. Any time you assemble a 2 stroke engine. And one that has been sitting for a while. Or an unknown that may have been inproperly worked on, needs to have a leak down test. It is very important that you have no leaks anywhere between carb and cylinder. That's the intake, reed block, crank seals, head, canister, etc. If you do have a leak, you will be tearing it down. Leak equals lean. And lean melts Pistons , rings , and basically burns your shit up. It's easy to check. And definitely worth doing. You can buy a tester rather cheap. Or it's not hard to make one. You block the exhaust port and the intake and pressurize it with about 5 psi. Don't want much more pressure than that or you will create problems. If you can hold 5psi. for about 5 min. Then you are good to go and can get back to oiling your brakes.

I had an 84 YZ 490. Up to 84, the plastics on the bikes were yellow, after that they were white. Mine was always hard to start on the first ride of the day, after that it usually fired right up. Always start it with a riding boot if you value your ankles. Some folks use the tip of leaning the bike to the left until some gas dribbles out the overflow tube and then try to start it. I don't remember what my jetting was because I sold the bike 10 years ago. I do remember that the bikes were hard to keep jetted properly. Properly running or as close you can get it, it will be a monster and literally rip your arms off. I still think you have to work on your jetting, 1/3 to mid range seems rich. Play with the clip position on the needle. You do not need to let it idle to warm up for 5 minutes before riding. Fire it up, warm it up slowly for a minute with some revs on the throttle and then ride "reasonable" for the first couple of minutes then have at it.

Some mod to the squish area in the head helps considerably. (((6)))) This bike when running correctly will smash this kid, for real. When kicking over a big bore 2 stroke you can make your life alot easier but getting the piston to TDC then pushing just past it. If there is no crankcase air leak (if so, replace crankcase gaskets, very important on a two-stroke, it will never run right if they are leaking), Then: 1. New set of rings, and check/replace piston and check bore, 2. New spark plug, 3. Clean and jet carb, 4. New air filter, 5. Fresh fuel, 6. New Clutch plates, 7. Check and/or replace intake reeds, 8. Remove dents from expansion chamber/pipe so the resonance will work properly again. And 9. Never let it idle for long periods unless you want to foul the plug. Warm it up by riding it gently for a few minutes only. Then rip into it. Do all of that, and the YZ490 will run correctly. That bike should require very little throttle at low rpm to accelerate strongly and smoothly. Wide open throttle even in high gear should just about yank your arms free of the bars. At least that's how my KX500 is, I would assume the YZ490 is very similar in power, if not more so.

I started it and got on it and gave it full throttle for a minute or two and it was cleared out and running perfect, with instant throttle response that would rip your hands off the grips at 3/4 throttle. this kid does not have a clue what he is doing with this YZ490.

I have never known a person with a yz490 who hasn’t snapped the back guard and that wasn’t even lifting the front wheel there’s definitely something wrong with it

I had an 82 yz 250, sounded exactly like this, turned out it was the magneto stator coils breaking down. Bought new ones from Yamaha, Transformed the bike...amazing after that... Try measuring the stator coils on your bike, see if they are within spec...

So many negative comments. Why doesn't everyone use their extra energy to help this guy? Tuning a 2 Stroke Dirtbike is not a difficult thing. 1st Air leaks kill you. In his case the bike is never leaning out so I doubt he has an air leak anywhere. He needs to start with the air screw and the pilot. Idle to 1/4 throttle is going to be air screw and pilot. Transition for 1/4 throttle to 3/4 throttle is the needle taper and the position of the clip. 3/4 to wide open is the main jet. In this particular case I would get it warmed up and check the idle circuit first. If he has an imbalance in the air screw and idle he could be loading it up before he even whacks the throttle. Rarely do you need to change the needle and clip unless you have a pipe, porting done, or some other mods. It never screams when he opens it up so I would say his main could be changed out for a smaller one. He can also do a plug check by putting in a new plug, taking it on some hot laps, point the bike toward the house, wind it UP, pull in the clutch, then kill the motor. Roll it into the garage, pull the plug, and do a reading? Is it black on the tip, is it black down low on the resistor, is it white ( in this case no LOL). I agree that if he has that throttle open that bike should be standing on the rear tire. A big bore 2 stroke is no joke. I own an 88 CR500 and a 90 KX500. Ride Safe and have fun !

Shaun get a workshop manual, a person new to all this wouldn't realise the difference between good advice and bad. These clowns have no idea. A Honda manual will be available for your bike and it will be right. Just read it and it will explain how to do the job. Everyone can be an expert on KZbin if they say they are, even if they have no idea.

I also put a 1mm big bore kit in mine. It's now a true 500çc. It will scare you. I have a 50 pilot and 430 main, 3rd clip position from top. At sea level. I clocked it at 95 mph.

That 85 yz490 was made to run at 20 to 1 mixture. The leanest I'd go is 32 to 1 mix. More oil means higher compression rates and less likely to ping from today's shitty gas. When this bike was new we still had some lead in our gas. The yz490 has alot of history of lean out and blowing up. This bike clearly is jetted really bad. In 39 years of racing 2 strokes I've seen and rode a few yz490s.

Good to see you've made some improvements to it (you've noticed a difference, so somethings better), though like a few have mentioned, it might be wise to just check/touch up a few more things as it's still boggy; Give the spark plug a look, is it a nice tan colour? Change the filter for a new one for sure, fuel etc. It might be wise to take the head off just to see how the piston's doing as well as how the head/base gaskets are looking. Keep tinkering with it, will be a monster once there fully!

Need new fiber clutch plates. There should be a plate minimum thickness measurement in your manual or they could possibly be glazed over. I agree it is slipping, it should have been lifting the front wheel when you were getting on the gas on pavement.

The YZ490 being air cooled was not competitive with the CR500 (water-cooled) or KX500 (water cooled and power valved) unless your name was Broc or RJ. They did have a YZ500 for Europe however. From 1985 or the YZ490 was severely discounted. I remember seeing a good-excellent one for $600 around 1990 (only a few years old and it seemed like a huge bike for me at the time) an average 1985 Used CR500 would have been $1000-2000 in comparison. Having an air cooled bike has advantages and with the higher oil quality now should be excellent. Jetting is a huge issue and maybe you want an auto-jetter like Dial-a-jet for serious race use. Could try a yz250 ignition box for higher revs etc. You can actually get the hole shot on a well prepped YZ490 (Broc Glover did) but winning the race once the bike gets hot is difficult (possible pre-detonation problems). Could always try to duct fan it. Would be fun making a e85 YZ490 with all the tricks and smoking cr500s and KX500s along with all the common 450s people ride now.

Very first thing with a two-stroke warming up a two-stroke does not mean heat in the engine. Warming up a two-stroke means clearing out the bottom and to where it’s not loaded up with fuel in the crank case. When you start that thing you should burp the throttle wide open until all the smoke clears. Hold it wide open till the smoke clears for a few seconds each time then it is warmed up two strokes load the bottom and you have to keep that cleared out they are meant to run wide open. Second of all you are way too rich that engine should sound like it’s about to come apart then you’re right. That engine should whine to a point where only dogs can hear it. That’s just a friendly heads up.
