Insight from a Yankees fan: Gray couldn’t handle pitching in Yankee Stadium and his home/road splits support this; Mateo was a top prospect at the time of the trade so they didn’t give up on him, they gave up a good piece to get what they thought would be a high return; Gallo never adjusted his approach and never wanted to be a Yankee (he’s admitted to both of these); Chapman quit on the team; Estrada they legit gave up on because he didn’t have a clear position at the time

Only player one can make a case for was Gray since the guy at least return to his All Star form after leaving the team. The others however...lets just say the video didn't age well. Some people dont like the big stage with pressure, its too much for them. Players like this usually cant perform in the playoffs. Look at aroldis with the cubs in 16 playoffs, almost blew it for them. Not to mention all the blunders with the yanks.

As much as I don't like Chapman but in his defense for 2016, Maddon overused him. The guy had no business pitching in a blowout win in Game 6 when he should have been resting for Game 7 given how much the guy have been used that series when the Cubs came back from a 1-3 hole. Not to mention Game 7 shouldn't have been that close to begin with only for the certain 3x Manager of the Year winner to make pitching changes that barely made sense.

Were the Yankees really going to wait 6 or 7 years for Mateo to become a good SS? Also, got to imagine this was created moments before Chapman had his famous 1/3 of an inning, 3 walk and 2 ER performance. Sonny Gray came over 2 years too soon because Larry Rothschild tried to change Sonny Gray from what made him successful, if Matt Blake was around when Gray came over, he would have done great in NY. Gallo is still Gallo, just he has hit a few HRs to start the year, but he's going to inevitably trend downward based on the fact that a .187 AVG and .887 OPS just aren't sustainable together. Thairo is the one that is unfortunate for me personally because I actually liked him as a prospect and thought he had value as a depth piece middle infielder but they gave up on him and brought in Odor instead.

High pressure environment vs low pressure environments mostly. Gallo put up a 76 ops+ with the Yankees and 84 with Los Angeles then jumped back up into the 120 range like he did with the rangers. This is not a new thing.

I got into a arguement with a Yankees fan who said Sonny Gray was overrated before coming too NY and thats why he never panned out. I dropped some stats on him to show since going too MIN he was trending towards being a all star again. I was roasted. I saved those receipts and made sure to show them after his start too this season.

I feel people were unfair towards Gray in 2017. Often they would cite his W-L record with the Yankees when in truth he had no run support whenever he pitched. It was 2018 where things got bad and even then if one looks at his home/road split he was actually fine on the road. Even before he was later traded there are signs that the guy would benefit from a change of scenery.
