Justin Verlander is 42 years old. I am 42 and can still run and do 30 push-ups at once. Verlander only throws a high of 77mph now instead of his 97mph fastball. So unless he can locate his pitches this was a bad deal for the Giants to yet again get another Veteran who goes belly up.

You could do things like that because you didn’t need a huge bullpen back then. Ace SPs were trying to pitch CGs then. Not 6-7 innings like the aces do now. 4-5 man rotation. That 5th SP would be skipped pretty often and double as a long reliever. This stuff freed up more roster spots for stuff like this.
